Should I really use 50 for FVD and 26 NM for LN???

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Let's get to it. This might be my most ridiculous thread to date. So bear with me! On my journey through m96/m97 engine life I acquired for my; 996.2 a FVD motorport oil pan with drain (henceforth referred to as "FVD") 997.1 X51 a LN engineering OIL drain plug (henceforth referred to as "LN") (note; as this car will not see track use and is a X51 I did not bother with deeper oil sump kit) As for the questions; 1. the plugs look similar, with included crush washers. FVD has a torque spec of 50NM and LN 26 NM which seems like quite the difference. Should I really use 50 for FVD and 26 NM for LN??? 1. for both I order copper washers as the ones included each costs around 1 USD which is way too much, but can copper / aluminum touching really lead to corrosion? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Aluminum will be very susceptible to galvanic corrosion in contact with copper in the presence of any electrolyte. Buy the correct washer. A new sump plate is expensive.

Thanks, found 50 aluminum; https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005...85729605.pic_7 Are these ok?

POST 4Original post

The ln spec is fine, make sure the allen is fully seated in the plug. verify 18mm, i can remember. Amazon Amazon

Thanks! I just wonder now why FVD did 50NM. Really wierd then

POST 6Original post

There is also a misprint somewhere in the factory manual with a very high torque spec. Probably 20 threads about broken or stripped plugs if u search.

Found these on AliExpress, I will get 50 and be done with it.

POST 8Original post

Use the torques supplied by the MFR. The LN plug has a 24 pound rare earth magnet inside it, and exceptionally high torques can cause the plug to deform. FSI developed the magnetic drain plug, and determined the adequate torque based on the stretch of the plug. Engine temperature was also a consideration. Over- tightening these drain plugs is the only thing that will cause issues with them. Trust that the physical characteristics between plugs is the only thing confusingly similar between them. Differences in materials, magnet strength and anodizing processes can't be seen. These are the things that determine the torque value. This is why you follow the directives, and know that they were created from more than just guesswork.

Wow! Thanks, I will live be these words :-)

POST 10Original post

When in doubt, contact the manufacturer. I got quick responses from FVD when I purchased my first GT3 Cup front lip spoiler. (before it was discontinued) I've gotten multiple lightening fast responses from LN about many things.

Hey hey, I agree with you 100% on LN however with regards to FVD my experience is a hit or miss, I asked them about crush washers etc on the oil pan and all I got in return was the instructions manual.

Call the sales number in the US. Rhonda has always been helpful. If she can't get you an answer, maybe she can tell you who to talk to.

POST 13Original post

I've opened tickets with LN on a holiday weekend and received a call within 30 minutes. I didn't expect an answer until sometime the next business day.(or two) Rhonda with FVD was quick to respond to me. (Especially compared to most businesses) But LN is one of the best.
