Believe it or not our 2000 Golf TDI with 186,000 km is like new and was never touched by mechanic hand except tire changes and radio replaced while still under warranty.

Just spoke w/ a Porsche mechanic and he said i could find a part on Ebay that needs to go into the tranny to adjust the problem.

The bad news, is this is likely a mechanical issue that may necessitate the case being opened up.

From tranny issues that one told me i could solve by buying some aftermkt part on ebay and installing in tranny to another mechanic saying it was the throwout bearing of the clutch system.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My car is occasionally popping out of 1st gear & getting worse by the week. As i sit at stop, i put it in 1st and occasionally as i release the clutch and the tranny puts pressure on 1st gear, it violently pops out of gear and into neutral. At that pt, i simply put it back in first, keep a touch of pressure on the gear shift to keep it in first and it's fine.
I've received different opinions from the local mechanics. From tranny issues that one told me i could solve by buying some aftermkt part on ebay and installing in tranny to another mechanic saying it was the throwout bearing of the clutch system.
I would appreciate any help as i don't want to start dumping money until we know what the problem is... Thank you ALL in advance
'99 996, 108k miles, new clutch at 73k. no work ever on tranny.
Does it do it when the tranny is cold or all the time? I would try a fluid change first. That is the cheapest. If that doesn't work then the syncros are bad. Tranny rebuild time.
Cold vs Hot. Most of my driving is within 5 miles of the house, so certainly happens when cold, but haven't noticed if it occurs on longer trips. But it's a fairly violent mechanical pop-out, so i can't believe fluid alone would just make this disappear. there's clearly some mechanical failure.
Just spoke w/ a Porsche mechanic and he said i could find a part on Ebay that needs to go into the tranny to adjust the problem. perhaps same part as mentioned in thread above.
Two things usually cause this in a trans. First, there are engagement dogs on the gears that are undercut and lock in to each other and keep the gears together fully engaged. When the dogs wear, they no longer lock into each other and when power is applied they will move away from each other causing the trans to go into neutral. The other and less common cause is a spring loaded detent that helps the shift selector stay in a chosen gear has worn. A fix for this may be a new spring, ball, plunger or assembly. A fix for the worn dogs, are new gears, syncros, forks or the like.
GL with the repair. The bad news, is this is likely a mechanical issue that may necessitate the case being opened up. First check the shift cables and make sure they fit well in the ferrels and held firmly in place and in good condition. This is the easiest, least costly and most obvious thing that should be addressed before looking elsewhere.
I had a very similar failure on my tranny at 74,000 Km but it was a second gear grinding when engaged and popping out on occasion.
The solution was simple and painless: my mechanic called and had a brand new transmission from the factory fully paid for by my aftermarket warranty company.
I do not understand how people can drive such a wonderful but infrequently problematic and expensive to repair car without a service contract.
It is not a Honda.
ummm becasue we can work on our own cars and actually enjoy it. Its called a hobby. To some the car is nothing but a toy Not our DD.. not a relied on way of trasportation.. If it breaks it can sit till i get around to fixing it...we all skin our cat and cover our own asses in many ways.
Sorry your comment torqued me tube a bit... But no worries.. I dont hold a grudge.
I like working on my vehicles and also enjoy it. I did for years. I buy my vehicles almost always new, I want to keep them in perfect shape and safe and do not wish some 18 yrs old apprentice mess with them and cross thread oil pan bolt etc.
As a matter of fact I've got 3 cars and also 3 mcycles between me and my wife (kids are gone now). Believe it or not our 2000 Golf TDI with 186,000 km is like new and was never touched by mechanic hand except tire changes and radio replaced while still under warranty.
When I bought the Golf it was with FREE service during warranty and STILL I did all by myself; my friendly service manager was told by me that I will not let any "technician" touch my car and he was offered two choices: 1 - just forget everything and see you later OR 2 - when scheduled mainenance comes up he will give me oil and filters and stamp my book. He wisely chose the second option.
Same goes for bikes (2004 R1-33,xxx km, 2001 Guzzi V11S - 46,xxxkm and 2004 Yamaha cruiser with 30,xxx km. I especially enjoy working on the bikes, especially during wintertime in my smoking room inside the house. They are so neat.
But 2002 996 I bought used in Jan 2009 and it came with a transferable 1.5 years residue warranty. I did not want it since the seller wanted me to pay extra for it but he talked me into it and after the deal was done I was sort of angry at myself.
Then the coolant bottle started leaking, sunroof rattling, sway bar links knocking and finally second gear grinding. All in quick succession, all very worrysome but, surprise, all painlessly taken care by a friendly indy who was always servicing this car for the previous owner. All fully paid by warranty with no questions asked. Over 10,000 bucks saved in my pocket!
Do I have to keep convincing anybody that I am a believer? 996 is fun to work on and is a great car, really, but parts are so expensive and, being stressed by proper use, so easy to fail that the thinking man should keep it covered. Thats my story and I stick to it.
I am sorry for such a long and winding post but I would not like anybody to be mislead as of where I am coming from with my statements, Shark Attack and Eharrison.
I hope you change your oil every 2-3k miles if you only go ~5 miles to/from work
have a good mechanic drive it and diagnos it, worth it in the long run... might be a cable or linkage issue, might be more
i had exactly the same problem several years ago. It was very embarassing sometimes because not only would it pop out of first as i engaged the clutch but sometimes it would grind a bit as well and i got more than a few stares from people who thought i couldn't drive a standard shift let alone in a Porsche!!
Ultimetly had to have the transm. opened and have dog gears and synchros changed.
good luck with yours!
Pete
ivangene: i change oil every 10k miles. mechanic never suggested otherwise. over the course of the 10k miles, i prolly add 3 qts due to consumption.
janusz: what warranty company do you have. everything u read about these companies is that they're all BS. collect ur money and then dont cover anything. perhaps you've been fortunate, but i've never considered these an option.
Along with Rennlist input (thank you all) and the opinion of the lead Porsche mechanic at my local dealership, i'm changing the detent in the gearbox. Purchasing a new detent from Gbox on ebay for $99. The effectiveness of this solution is dependent on how badly dogeared the gears already are.
For those with a '99, this appears to be a good preventative measure as it allows the tranny to go further into the 1st or 2nd gear, thereby reducing the risk of dog earing a gear, thus causing pop outs.
i will report back on the results after install.
While we absolutely appreciate the recommendation this is not a part that we make. As was linked elsewhere in this thread, Gbox modifies the original part to work as a replacement for the stock piece. There's sometimes some confusion with people thinking we are the same company because we are both in Boulder. Their fix is a good solution to this problem if the dog teeth aren't too far gone and damaged.
If they are damaged and it doesn't fix the problem, thankfully Porsche finally released service parts for these gearboxes, and you can actually buy a 1st gear (or 2nd gear) idler as an individual part. On the 993s and other previous models they always sold them as matched sets and forced you to buy a new mainshaft when you had worn out or damaged dog teeth on 1 or 2. Now it's a several hundred dollar idler instead of a $1500 mainshaft 1/2 kit.
OK - you guys stay on topic....but this is an issue IMO... you should start a second thread and get input on this... 10k iintervals on a town car is 5x too long IMO and adding 3 quarts??? is it a track car? OMG might want to look into that too. I know some cars use more oil than others and are perfectly fine...I hate to ask and go WAY ot.. but what oil?
Solution: I installed a new detent and my problem seems to have vanished. 1st gear had been popping out quite violently the last few days, so i was concerned the gears were too far worn for a small adjustment in the detent design to mitigate the problem. However, much to my surprise, i installed it yesterday and i'm amazed that the car seem great.
I highly recommend this item as a preventative measure or as soon as you have a 1st or 2nd gear pop out on u a few times. It took me about 3 hours total, but this includes preping, jacking the car w/ 4 jacks/stands to ensure safety and all clean up.
Thanks to all the members for help/support on this thread. Very much appreciated, what a gr8 resource.
GT sorry that I got you folks confused With Gbox. Just wait until you get old, you will see the memory just doesn't always...uh.. what were we talking about???
I did not take pix b/c i have seen other threads online w/ pix of the install. I noticed on a previous thread that the guys at Gbox did not want to completely describe the slight changes to the original design b/c of course that's essentially the info they're selling. I'd like to respect their intellectual property and not describe the differences.
With regard to install, find other threads or let me know and i'd be happy (or Gbox) to walk u thru it.
bringing an old thread back to life. Buuuut my 996 99 C4 has been doing this here and there. Would love a write up of what all this involves thanks guys! Happy driving!
