After researching the forum everyone was pointing at the crankshaft selonoid and the actuator, so I changed both. Now the 1328 code is gone but the 1341 pops up at 4000rpm and no engine light, the crankshaft reading is 0 and 2.8(I am assuming is normal!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Greetings everyone, i have 2002 996 c2, after I changed my oil last week an engine light came on(coincidence!!!) car has 40.000miles codes 1328 and 1341. After researching the forum everyone was pointing at the crankshaft selonoid and the actuator, so I changed both. Now the 1328 code is gone but the 1341 pops up at 4000rpm and no engine light, the crankshaft reading is 0 and 2.8(I am assuming is normal! both cats reading (fail) could be the o2 sensors! please let me know if anybody know! thank you in advance

Hook up a durametric and get your camshaft deviations. Could be worn cam chain pads.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17844387

hello Jobyt, here is my reading on the camshaft at 600rpm and 3000 when the car is hot, also to mention that my engine is the second generation of 996 thank you very much for your expertise, pls let me know what do you think!

POST 4Original post

That looks out of spec. @Porschetech3 Skip - what do you think? I'd guess the camshaft pads are pretty worn at this point.

Thank you very much for your reply, I have no idea and cant understand these numbers, does the engine 996.2 needs to come out for this job?

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 17844245

What did you change? The solenoids (2) or the actuator inside the engine?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 17848472

Thanks for the shout-out jobyt !! Since you have a 996.2 3.6 they have some special problems with vario-cam. First thing is make sure the oil is proper weight, The vario-plus system does not like the wrong weight oil. It also does not like dirty oil. There has been many codes cured by changing the oil several times to get all the dirty oil out of the engine. The m96 has a lot of residual oil left and one oil change doesn't do it. The adjustment uses a vane-cell adjuster that has very tight clearances and any dirt will cause sticking. If the dirt can't be flushed out, the actuator has to be replaced and is an engine out proceedure. Next thing would be to get someone to drive you while watching the actual cam values. You want to see them rise and fall as the motor revs and comes back down and also to see them together following the same pattern. Once you have the condition defined as to if it will not advance, or will not go back to rest. then you can proceed with the diagnosis. It could be dirty/failed actuator or a dirty/failed solenoid.

the selenoid and the actuator on this car are both outside the engine so I changed both! also I change my oil every 3000miles and its always the same Mobil 0w40! thank you very much for the reply!

Hello, technical question, what should I monitor while driving the actual angle for inlet camshaft (they were spot on while driving going up and down) or the spec angle for inlet camshaft ? (They were off while driving but spot on while the car is still) thank you

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 17853494

Is the fault code consistent or is it intermittent? Does it produce the code in short order or does it take a long time? The answer can determine the testing procedure. I suggest doing a log/graph of the actual and specified camshaft angle during a road test that produces the fault code, then post the data for analysis...

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17855337

Thank you porschetech3 for your answer and time the fault code is consistent and it comes after a short order mainly with rpm over 3000, I am attaching a video during the driving and seems that the car is sluggish sometimes then perfect after. Minute, this morning several codes on a misfire cylinder 1-3 car had I little jerk on cold start then it was okay, I deleted the code and drove the car for about 60 miles and they never came back. The spark plugs are 7 years Old and the coils are longer than that, I am planning to swap them the next week or so. I am attaching a short video on the values while driving. Thank you for your time again!

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The readings on the drive are the following : ‘camshaft position reading stay solid and didn’t change during the drive bank one 2.4 and bank 2 is 0 and on hot engine it stays on 2.4 and -0.2 the angle both bank went up to 40 =/- o.5 and dropped both to 0 when car is stopped the spec camshaft inlet angle is off sometimes while driving bank one sometimes stays at 0 or goes up plus or minus but bank 2 always moves up and down +20 then back to 0. When the care is stopped the spec camshaft inlet angle bank one and 2 go together up and down when rpm goes up and down. i hope that would help to find out if there is a problem! thank you
