Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got my engine mounts replaced this afternoon, and the car definitely rides much smoother. No more rattling passenger seat. Murphy is usually always watching when I do any kind of project, but everything went completely as planned without a single issue (I know, I shouldn't say that out loud). Replaced both mounts in just under 2 hours. Pretty easy job, so if you're on the fence.... just do it! The old mounts were pretty worn out (see pic). Left is old, right is new. Notice the difference. Ready to install the right mount. Left mount installed and ready to go.

POST 2Original post

Well done. Short of not jacking up the engine properly, usually the only difficulty with the replacement is if someone damages the rectangle cutout the mount rests in. Ive seen several thatve been deformed by hammer hits to seat the mount.

POST 3Original post

I did mine this past weekend. Major difference in ride quality. Both sides were bad. 54K on car, 2003 Coupe

Wow, yours were worse than mine, and mine is an '01 Coupe with 62K miles. Now that the car is smoother and quieter, I've got new sounds to figure out and determine if they're "expected" or not, as they were masked by all the rattles before.

Are the mounts for the 6 speed the same as for the tiptronic? Not clear on the Pelican site. Never mind. Fount my answer. Need to replace single bushing at tail end of transmission.

I'll also add support, unless two Murphys make a negative. I hope I didn't screw this up.

POST 10Original post

Im going to do the mounts this week. Dont know IF I need them but... Rein mounts? OEM are ridiculously expensive. Uste the same nuts?

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 17848778

Just put some on two months ago. Rein are fine. Same nuts.

POST 12Original post

Will be putting in REIN mounts as well. Sitting under the Xmas tree right now.

POST 13Original post

I did OEM. Did not think they were expensive. A lot of folks choose OEM, surprisingly, to avoid the odd issue of engine misfires. Not saying youll have misfires, but some mounts can cause that problem.

POST 14Original post

Absolutely. To your point, I was all set to go with semi solid mounts about a year ago until Jake gave everyone a heads up not to due to messing with the sensors. After going thru countless threads, Rein was given a thumbs up. I may be incorrect, but I think Rein makes the Oem engine mounts for Porsche. Someone set me straight if I didnt get this right.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17848794

Ditto. Rein and original nuts. No need to jack up the vehicle either.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My left exhaust tip was lower than the right side before I installed the new mounts, and I had hopes the new mounts would fix it and even them out, but the left is still about 7mm lower. It's better than before, but enough for my keen eye to notice. Murphy was watching after all...

POST 17Original post

Any strong opinions on adding urethane sealant to the OEM mounts to have a slightly stiffer mount? I'm at the point where I need new mounts, already have the Rein mounts in hand, just wondering if its worth putting goo in them to perhaps get either A) A little more life out out of them or B) Get a little more of a "sporty" feel since even new OEM mounts seem to be excessively soft. I wonder what level of engineering went into the design of these mounts. Are they simply to isolate vibration from the engine to the chassis? Or is there 1000's of hours and many dollars spent of R&D to land on these squishy failure prone mounts? Check out the video below: You Tube My 996 already feels like a horse and buggy compared to my wife's Mercedes and my F-150. I have a hard time thinking adding some stiffness to the OEM mounts will "ruin" the driving experience. I may end up doing this.

POST 18Original post

Pencap914 - Good question. So my thoughts: The engine mounts keep the drivetrain in as straight a line as possible while isolating as much vibration from the engine as possible. The latest buzz is about the durometer of the mounts. The OE mounts are likely tuned with the engine knock sensors in mind. There is mounting evidence, anecdotal in most cases, that folks are experiencing fuel cuts due to higher durometer mounts triggering the knock sensors. I had Wevo mounts and would sometimes get fuel cut out above the 6,000 range under hard acceleration and couldn’t figure why. Jake Raby mentioned why he uses OEM mounts. I changed mine back to Rein OEM and, wouldn’t you know, no more stutter. There is a very big difference in the way the car feels with the stiffer mounts (which I really like), but I can’t imagine knock sensor trouble is good for the engine. So I’ll live with more torque-induced body roll and less precise shifts when I press the go pedal down. And are you saying your Ford F-150 handles better than your 996?

POST 19Original post

A tired suspension will have more handling effects on the car than worn engine mounts. Also, don't forget about the transmission mount. It is probably in the same condition as your worn out engine mounts.

POST 20Original post

I've heard about the woes of using wevo (or other aftermarket) mounts. Hence why I went with the OEM style Rein mounts. I just wonder if adding a little stiffness to the OEM ones would be enough to have an affect on the knock sensors since the engine is still mounted to the chassis via squishy rubber. I would just like a little more precision in my shifting. (Although a numeric shifter is where you achieve this....) I was misleading with my F-150 comment. The 996 is a go-cart compared to the F-150, but long distance comfort the F-150 is much quieter and has squishy suspension etc. I'm simply saying I don't mind sacrificing a little engine vibration noise for some performance. I think I'll give it a shot using the 3M windo-weld and see how they perform. Worst case scenario I ruin ~ $200 worth of motor mounts. Annoying, but not the end of the world.

POST 21Original post

I went against the grain time will if I’m wrong can be $$$$

POST 22Original post

Out of curiosity, I am going to... 1. First replace my oem engine mounts with 57k on them with Rein mounts without touching the suspension nor transmission mounts to be able to judge the overall improvement feel and handling. Purely non-scientific butt dynameter stuff. 2. Then I will replace the transmission mount and butt dyno it to see if there is any improvement in shifting and feel. 3. Then I will update my coil springs to judge any improvement by feel. All need to be refreshed and am curious as to what improvements are made by feel and times. I already have my track times so I can compare seconds if any occur on the track. Stands to reason improvements should be made at least in feel, but why not piece it out to see incrementally what may transpire. Eventually I will replace the Oem shifter with a numeric or cae shifter. Haven't made a decision yet. Probably a 2023 project.
