I installed the complete system with speed control, I think the flaps opened up at 35 mph (but added a bypass switch to override).

My mechanic recommended FabSpeed but I prefer to go OEM where I can.

OEM mufflers modified by Fister- probably no performance change but sounds pretty good and no drone at all.

Most muffler shops use 1 1/2 or 2 non-stainless pipes which produce a different sound.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey gang - has anyone upgraded their 996.1 (MY99 in particular) from stock to OEM sport exhaust? Having trouble finding videos online (save for one from PCA - see below). My mechanic recommended FabSpeed but I prefer to go OEM where I can. Looking mostly for the improved sound. Performance boost is a bonus as my sub-2900lb 3.4L Coupe has plenty of power for spirited daily driving.
Thanks in advance!
-Ryan

An alternative to the sport exhaust is to either modify the installed stock mufflers or pick up a used pair of OEM mufflers. Have the Fister or Gundo mod done by a muffler shop. This is an easy and inexpensive modification. I had this done and to my 99 996 and the exhaust note is very close to the note in the attached video.
It is my understanding that the Fister/Gundo mod creates the same physical properties as the Sports exhaust. The difference is the exhaust is in sports mode all the time, no switching on/off.
The Gundo Mod can be heard at the 12:40 mark here

Some Fister exhaust drive-bys on my '99 C4 w/3.8, Agency Power headers and stock cats. OEM mufflers modified by Fister- probably no performance change but sounds pretty good and no drone at all. Kind of what the OP is looking for without the cost of OEM Sport Exhaust.

For reference, here's the same setup except with Agency Power mufflers. More sound and deeper, but also more drone.

No affiliations, just having fun.
Fister Motorsport modifies the stock exhaust for a very good sport muffler sound. Definitely the low cost/high value way to go. Also buy new hardware from Fister, they offer it economically.
If you go the Fister route, be sure to have a 1 3/4 diameter stainless cross pipe TIG welded. Most muffler shops use 1 1/2 or 2 non-stainless pipes which produce a different sound.
I added a Porsche sport exhaust to my then new 2003 996. I think I paid $1500 for the whole kit. I installed the complete system with speed control, I think the flaps opened up at 35 mph (but added a bypass switch to override). I also added a manual switch at the horseshoe.
I have the TSB with the instructions, if you need them.
