There r many 3ohm resistors u can buy on ebay to defeat the light if u need to run the car.

The Porsche crest on my 2000 996 steering wheel is worn out and I have purchased a new one on the internet. The problem is how to replace it safely. The new one needs to be riveted to the center portion of the airbag, and to do this requires removing the airbag and its cover. Does anyone know if there's a way to do this without triggering an airbag fault? I know that one must remove power from the battery, I heard that if power is disconnected for at least 12 hours, the airbag fault light will not activate. Can anyone confirm this? To my knowledge, the emblem on the steering wheel is not a serviceable item. Can it be done? Yes, however most Rennlisters here will recommend a new airbag unit. The last thing you want is a metal object flying towards your face during an unfortunate deployment of the airbag. Re:airbag fault, no light will be triggered if you disconnect the battery before disconnecting the bag. Should a fault arise, it can be cleared using a reset tool.

Don't touch the airbag until you have disconnected the battery. You don't need to wait 12 hours. However, if you are replacing it with a metal plate, you don't want an airbag at all there...
