Reported cause
One of the reasons I sold my 2017 Grand Sport was due to the cracking and bending problems associated with the rims.
Leading evidence: 'cracking and bending problems associated' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cracking and bending problems associated' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair 1 crack' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

For what it's worth, I had a wheel repaired on an M5 and it still leaked afterwards.

I first replaced the tire, then had the assembly sealed.

Probably happened over winter when I use Bridgestone Blizzaks.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had my summer tires mounted recently, and the dealer told me there was a crack in one of my wheels that was only visible once the tire was off. Said I should get it replaced, quoted me like $1400!! Should I be looking for a used wheel now, or not worry about it until it stops holding air?
Wheels can and do crack over time. There are companies that rebuild them. I would compare the cost of buying a new or used replacement versus the cost and trouble of having to take your current wheel and/or wheel-tire-combo to get rebuilt.
The cost range for just 1 used wheel might only be $100-$300. A rebuild might only cost $100-$200 depending on paint/finish.
I would not spend $1400 on 1 wheel or anywhere close to that unless the wheels were $4,000 to begin with (aftermarket).
Definitely not doing anything about isn't an option.
Find a local wheel repair shop. I had a very slow leak. I took the tire off and dumped it water and saw slow bubble on the inner rim area. I noticed a small hairline crack. Called around to match the 3-piece aluminum forged wheels i had and wasn't able to find any. I took the wheel to local wheel repair shop. They also noticed a slight dent on the same area that was probably caused by running over some pot holes. They fixed the dent, welded the crack and rebalanced tire/wheel. Haven't had any air leak or problems with wheel since.
For what it's worth, I had a wheel repaired on an M5 and it still leaked afterwards. I first replaced the tire, then had the assembly sealed. Then had the wheel repaired, and then had it repaired and rebuilt, and it still leaked air after all that. Strange I thought.
So again, consider buying a new wheel online if the cost is reasonable.
Replace them. It will have a slow leak if you're lucky, or catastrophic failure on the highway if you're not. Google or eBay or Rennlist classifieds. Lots of 996 owners sell their OEM wheels for bling wheels. You can buy a full set of used wheels for $1400. I will be trading in my 2002 C4S later this year, and I have a set of 2003 Twin Turbo lighweight wheels I used as a spare set that I will be posting for sale with tires for around $1500.
Why play with the risks of any repair possibly compromising the integrity (plenty of horror stories out there from both on and off track incidents)?
Looks like from your avatar that we might be talking about Carrera IIs. If so, quality used replacements were pretty easy to find cheap.
I recently had a cracked 18inch 02 rear rim.
I ended up getting one from dealership (Cary, NC) for 993 (tax included). Not sure which type of wheel you have 1400 seems way too high.
Looked into having my repair and the cost was told could be 100-500 depending on the amount of work that has to go into the repair. Tig wield was at minimum needed on mine but the shop did not want to repair since the damage was around the spoke.
I looked into refurbished wheel online and most quote was 500-700. Unfortunately no one has one in stock and I ended up going with dealership. Actually at 700, I would go with dealership for a brand new one.
Autorimshop.com was one of the place and they actually contacted me a week later that they located one and would need to go through their clean up refurbish and testing process before tehy could send it to me and their price was 550. So that's another option but I would call them, since their online system always say in-stock when in fact they did not have mine in stock.
If it is the front, there are several front rim on ebay and my local craiglist and cost between 150-350.
Did you have run flat tires on that cracked wheel at anytime? Reasons asked is that I have a Mercedes cls550 that we found the same , we used run flat, the road pot hole conditions and run flat tires didn't play well at higher speeds , also had a Corvette break a rim into with run flats.
No runflats. Probably happened over winter when I use Bridgestone Blizzaks.
Will probably go the used wheel route, since I have curb rash also. However, anyone know of a place in Milwaukee I could get a quote for repair?
We may have more coming soon, we had a set that was supposed to arrive last week that we were going to offer out however that seller only sent us fronts, so we are expecting an other set to arrive next week.
If we can help out we will however please in-box us and we will keep you posted. We may break up the set.
Hey all, happy holidays. Have been searching the forums but haven't found anything more recent than this so thought I'd refresh this one a bit. Like OP, have a relatively fast leak in my right rear wheel, local shop confirmed a 1 inch crack running from the inside lip of the wheel down along inside of wheel. Lets enough air out that it's flat relatively quickly.
So my question: anyone have experience with repairing an issue like this? Based on this and other threads (and the relatively conservative/"do it right, do it once" approach here) I have seen lots of people advise a cracked wheel is garbage, but thought I'd see if any advances or changes in recent years since this thread?
Alternately, anyone have a rear wheel (or two) they have been wanting out of the garage or shop? I'd even consider a set of 4 (Carerra II or turbo twists). I'm located in the Pacific Northwest.
I have a 2003 C2 Cab with Carerra II 5-spoke 18" stock rims, no track use (yet) needs.
check out this place (shipping is about $3-400) but still under $1400 all in for a full set that's like new.

What are talking about shipping and vat tax plus us tax and the cost of those is over $1800 and a month for shipping???
my set with tires is $800 now powder coated for $500 and you have a newly done rims with tires all in 1400 shipped
One of the reasons I sold my 2017 Grand Sport was due to the cracking and bending problems associated with the rims. So yes, it is a big problem with the GS and Z06 model Corvettes.
my repair guy welda cracks and I trust them. So do race cars putting high loads on the track. Send me a Measage is you want if fixed. He also repaired a 1 crack on the inside lip of my 10 sport design wheel on the back of my 01 911
