I removed the the spindle and took it to have a new bearing replaced anyway.

The cognoscenti loathe to recognize this clean design as a proper 911, but its time will come.

I'd like to replace the clutch, IMS and RMS, along with all filters, fluids, and other tune-up items before I dare go on a long trip, but it will happen in 2015.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone! I'm Omar, posting from Chicago, IL, and I've been a long time BMW fanatic. I've frequented bimmerforums.com since around 2003 and am a member of ZHP Mafia. I've had all sorts of bimmers from several E36 M3s (both 1995 Coupe 5spds), an E85 2003 Z4 Roadster 5spd, E38 2001 M Sport, a pair of E46 330i ZHP Sedan 6spds (a 2003 and a 2004) I even had an E31 1991 850i V12 with the rare 6-Speed. I've had a long list of BMWs and I loved them all differently. I learned to do any maintenance and repairs that I currently know how to perform on these wonderful cars and I'm pretty sure I'll always own at least one. Currently, I still have my 2004 330i ZHP 6spd.
That being my background, I've also always admired Porsche and dreamed of one day being able to get behind the wheel of one. Closest I've ever been was a 928 s4 that my father had in Guards Red. I don't recall the year, and I couldn't drive it because I was 13. Well, finally I was able to get my very own Porsche. I picked up a 2000 Porsche 911 Carrera 6-speed in Ocean Blue with 113k on the clock. She's mechanically sound and rides like a dream. Only one of the BMWs I've owned that came close to feeling like the 911 was my 850i, except it was really heavy in comparison. Otherwise, this C2 is pretty viscious. I love it and I don't know why it took me so long to get one.
Anyway, I just wanted to pop my head on in and introduce myself and my baby, and I hope to become a useful member of your Porsche community.
Happy New Year, Love the color Omar, congratulations and welcome to the family, you will learn this is a different beast, I owned 2 bimmers previously and e46 and an e90, based on my experience and been this one your first Porsche, you have to read the manual first, Gonzo one of the rennlisters placed a 15 points things you should know about your Porsche, straight forward info.
I got back in my ZHP after about 5 days of driving the C2 and it felt like an old Cadillac on airbags. The BMW was so smooth and light, and the C2 is just violent. The clutch bites hard, she shifts with purpose, the suspension is nice and stiff... such a pleasure to drive.

Beautiful car. I'm a sucker for the looks of a MK1 996 with aerokit and Ocean Blue is a classic color. With clean paint in direct sunlight, you'll catch at least four different colors depending on how the light hits.
The cognoscenti loathe to recognize this clean design as a proper 911, but its time will come. Drive it and keep it close.
You use the word vicious. Many times I jump out of my 99 C2 Cab after a very spirited drive and my words are "You gorgeous vicious little basterd" haha. You aint seen nothing yet Omar. Take that as being Gospel. She has a few more Ace cards up her sleeve for you to find. I don't track my car but have some of the bendiest lanes in the USA right in my back yard of PA Amish Country. Wind it up over the ton in third gear then come back on the board again. You may have a few more choice words to add to your word 'vicious' hahaha.
Welcome! I have a similar background with BMWs and recently picked up my first porsche - similar car to yours, mine is a 99 C2 with 103k miles. I've had it a few months and the more I drive the car the more I like it!
I still have a E39 M5 as well.
Thanks to all for the warm welcome!
Lol... Omar's coming. Good reference.
My car has had 3 previous owners and it has lived in Texas, Washington state, and California. I wonder if it is an original Aero or if someone added the skirts and front, because obviously the taco wing is missing. I wish it was on
Here are my options:

I don't doubt that one bit. I've driven thru Amish country PA before and I'm itching to take this car on a long road trip, but I don't trust it yet. I'd like to replace the clutch, IMS and RMS, along with all filters, fluids, and other tune-up items before I dare go on a long trip, but it will happen in 2015. Bet on that!
I joined PCA last night and it looks like the Chicago chapter has quite a few events lined up in 2015. Maybe I'll catch you around. Also, do you have a good local indy or body shop/detail shop you can recommend? The paint could use a good polish and I have IMS retrofit parts already. Not sure I wanna tackle that on my own just yet.
That's awesome! I've been thinking I need to get rid of my ZHP and get myself into an E39 M5
A wonderful car for the New Year. I think you'll give each other lots of pleasure. I was at a gas station yesterday and a black 991 pulled up. The owner and I talked...they couldn't get over how nice the 996 looked...how smaller looked more logical than bigger...and how they had been missing a manual trans after just a few months of PDK. Not saying this is true for everyone but the owner kept shaking his head every time he looked at my 11 now 12 year old 911. Your car is absolutely stunning...enjoy making any mods in small increments.
Hello everyone! Small update on my 996.
Paint was rough, faded on her, and the wheels were bad also. She's been driven her whole life, sitting at around 113k today, and was showing her age. The front bumper was very damaged underneath and the sideskirts as well.

To top it off, I had a mishap in the car myself. I drove it in February (like a dummy) and got stuck in a 3" deep hole of ice. I took many hours with a hard steel shovel to break enough ice around the wheels to dig her out. Anyway, I cracked the front bumper a little more that day and I decided to take her in to a body shop. They repaired the bumper and sideskirts, and we went for a full paint job on the car. I had the front bumper license plate holes filled in, and will use a tow-hook license plate bracket solution, the rear bumper guards were removed, and engine lid emblems were removed. I also added clear sidemarkers and the calipers were painted to red from their original black color. Currently, the headlights have bulb burn marks, so I will need to replace them at some point, and I would like to add a taco wing at some point if I can find one. She looks like a new car now though

Tires were bald, worn to the wear markers, and the rims were curb rashed pretty badly, so I went with a budget solution from Tire Rack for now. Sumitomo HTR Z III rubber on Sport Edition Cup 4 wheels. Nothing fancy, but new, clean, and shiny. This is her current status.

Indeed. There's bowl burn going on. Takes away from how fresh she looks now. I'm considering retrofitting these to HID over the winter off-season. That will give me something to do. If it doesn't work out the way I like, then I will have forced myself into headlight replacement
AFAIK, the suspension is stock. Wheels are 18x8 ET54 and 18x10 ET58 tires are 225/40 and 265/35. Pretty much true to factory spec. Cost for the wheels, tires, mounted and balanced, shipped to my door was a little less than $1,400 ... but it looks like the price went up slightly now by about $200.

Looks great! The Sumi's aren't bad at all. On my second set. My ONLY suggestion is, to my eye, the back now looks pretty plain. A Carrera or 911 emblem in the center of the rear deck would fill it in a little, but that's a minor quibble. Enjoy!
You're right, it does look a little plain. I've thought of it too. It used to have black Carrera lettering on there, but I think I might go with a silver 911 emblem.
I didn't want to get into a super expensive wheel and tire setup right this moment because I just spent money on the paint and there are other things to do (IMS, RMS, AOS, Clutch Kit, Front wheel bearings) all sitting in my garage. The tires were bald and the rims were beat so they needed to go first and foremost. I didn't feel safe riding around in those tires. The wheel bearings are next priority. They're shot.
I read in many places that the Sumi HTR Z IIIs are very popular budget tires for our cars and the price was right on tirerack, around $500 for the set. The wheels were also inexpensive and look like the turbo twists, with a more modern/sharp look to them. So I wasn't dramatically changing the way my car looks, or the fitment. They're not very lightweight, but I could do worse I suppose.
Wow! The paint looks great now. When you replace the headlights, if you're wanting a new look, you could also look into the GT Projector Headlight Retrofit Kits. Can view the kit
here
. They're pretty popular for the 996 and 986 folks.
Thank you! That's a great suggestion too. I will definitely look into it as that is budget friendly and more personalized than the other options.
Thanks! I think so too. Very similar but more modern is how I see them. I'm happy with the purchase. Suits the car well and they serve their immediate purpose.
Thanks for all of the compliments.
Today was a good day.
I went in to attack what I thought were bad front wheel bearings, and discovered that the noise was my rotor rubbing on the heat/debris shield there. Looks like the rotor is warped because it looks like it wobbles slightly when I spin it by hand. Anyway, I tried to bend the shield out of the way but wasn't very successful. I ended up cutting off a small piece from the bottom, near the ball joint. Noise is completely gone. I removed the the spindle and took it to have a new bearing replaced anyway. This is on the front left. I'll get around to the front right bearing next weekend since I ran out of time. Took the car for a spin. Smooth and quiet, just how I like.
I also added the RSD AUX cable and some white LED side marker bulbs. Ordered LED tuns signals in an amber/white switchback config, and also some bright white 55w halogen bulbs. This should do for now.
I need to find a headlight solution. What is best? Buying some used Litronics, custom retrofit, or the LED things from eBay?

A huge thanks goes out to alpine003 for hooking me up with a great set of Litronics for my car.
Real nice dude and great person to deal with. The headlights took 5min to swap out but we killed a whole hour just standing there talking. Thanks again!
Pardon the bad pics, and dirty car

It was great meeting Enemy too, who was a cool guy. His car has come a long way and looks great in person. These pics do not do it justice.
I'm sure you can actually see something at night now with these vs the burnt lenses you had. You also reminded me that I need to get off my a$$ and do the rear Euro bumper conversion too.
