I ended up replacing all the bolts for cap heads and washers.

In fact if they charged you an hour labor ($100) to "burp" the air, they could of instead accomplished the same task better in 5 minutes and used the $100 to pay for the tool.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sounds like the water pump in my wife's 2004 911 is going bad.

996 water pump going bad - YouTube
At least I have a lift, so replacing it shouldn't be too bad.
Looking online at replacement parts and there are a number of options with pretty wide ranging price differences. $300++ on Pelican for Porsche and OEM supplier brands down to sub-$100 for FMI - URO or just over $100 for a reman Cardone.
Is this one of those parts where you NEED to spend the money or are the aftermarket ones good?
Wife's daily driver, no track time or hard running of the car.
I replaced mine with Pierburg. They are the OEM for Porsche and about $150 or so cheaper. They look identical.
Now the discussions will go on forever about why pay more or why not get genuine Porsche and impeller composite material etc. etc.... Let the games begin!
There are a ton of recent water pump threads
Pierburg is who make the WPs for Porsche. I just replaced mine with a Pierburg and it even had the Porsche part number stamped in it. Paid around $180 for it

A couple of years ago, I had the WP replaced by my local P-car dealer. While the replacement might be considered PM as it was not leaking or otherwise notably failing, the vin. 1999 OE WP had 63K miles and I thought it was "noisey" on cold start up.
FWIW, the experienced tech did not perform the work by raising the car up high on the lift. He raised it only slightly to improve his "reach" and then dove in. Labor charges were 3 hours with about an hour spent "burping" air from the system.

P-car dealer did not use a vacuum to refill the coolant system? That's odd. I did this in my driveway and even I spent the $90 bucks for a vacuum fill tool. In fact if they charged you an hour labor ($100) to "burp" the air, they could of instead accomplished the same task better in 5 minutes and used the $100 to pay for the tool.
A second replacement pump on my 2004 as also preventative. OEM Replaced with OEM.
My Indie also did a low temp thermostat, plugs, coils, new performance muffler.... You know since we had it up on the lift.
Like JayG mentioned(thanks!) we offer 10% off for RL member's, just enter RENNLIST at checkout. Pierburg is the OEM part and it would be $189.86 with free shipping in the lower 48 US.

I'm going to place an order for several 996 parts with you Jason. After comparing a few Porsche venders prices
, yours are very competitive. Thanks for the info.
There may be a more painful and significant issue than just the brand ?
Regardless of brand and the material the impeller is made of, the importance of prompt replacement is difficult to overstate.
It isn't just the ugly coolant stains or the rattle of a worn pump.
If the composite vanes deteriorate to the point hat they disintegrate ,replacing the failed w-pump is just the beginning of the repair. You need to retrieve all the broken pieces of impeller to stop them blocking coolant flow. That hunting process is worthy of it's own thread.
If the metal impeller starts cutting into the crankcase half because the bearing is worn ,you may need a new crankcase half.
There is a reason some do a PM replacement at 50k miles or less.
The only thing I can come up with is general corrosion on the bolt from 72K miles weakened the bolt. But hell, its a 10.9 high grade bolt!
I ended up replacing all the bolts for cap heads and washers. It also makes it a lot easier to get to the hard to reach bolt!
