Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I bought a 1999 996 recently and I've been bringing this vehicle up to date with needed maintenance, etc but I ran across and issue I need help with.

If I don't start the car the radio works great but with the car running the radio doesn't work.

I presume the only way to lock the doors is using the key fob?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought a 1999 996 recently and I've been bringing this vehicle up to date with needed maintenance, etc but I ran across and issue I need help with.
When I purchased the vehicle the radio wasn't working. Checked the radio fuse in the drivers kick panel
(checked out ok)
I bought a pair of radio removal tools, removed the unit, pulled the fuse in the rear of the unit
(fuse checked out ok)
After I reinstalled the fuse the unit lit up asking for a four digit Code
( I guess removing the fuse reset it)
I noticed four numbers written on top of the unit, I entered those numbers and the system powered up and worked great
:-)
I reinstalled the radio, started the car and turned on the radio
(didn't work)
I turned off the car and tried to turn on the radio
(it worked)
???
With the car off I turned on the radio
(it worked)
next I started the car, the radio continued to work for 5 seconds then shut off.
If I don't start the car the radio works great but with the car running the radio doesn't work.
Ideas? Suggestions?
Another issue:
When I bought the car only one key came with it and the fob didn't work.
I replaced the fob battery but still not working. I can start the car ok but can't lock the doors.
Once the door is closed (from the outside) I can't lock/unlock the car via the lock on the door.
I presume the only way to lock the doors is using the key fob?
What's the most economical way to get a replacement fob?
Thanks for your comments/suggestions ...
1999 is pre CanBus but these two systems could be sharing a ground or relay. Look closely at the instrument panel wiring diagram and find common wiringcould be short there. On 996.2 if your alarm chirps when you set it with the fob there is an issue. Pre CanBus may not do that. Ever notice you cant turn ignition off and keep radio playing unless you slowly/genltly approach the engine off position with the key.
This is a wire inside where the radio mounts that is tied to the alarm system. If it is disconnected, either the alarm won't arm or the radio won't work, possibly. I think it's on the left side of the radio. I'd start there since it's pretty easy to check.
Hope this helps!
