Reported fix

Used some Home Depot HVAC silver tape for the edges to have that clean look. Then again used the high temp adhesive to spray glue the two thermal sheets sandwich to the chassis and the heat resistance and sound damping issue solved, IMO.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

While doing some engine out work on my 2001 996 I got to looking at the engine compartment insulation and decided to replace it as it was looking a little worse for wear and I was getting tired of having little black pieces of pad all over when I worked on it, so after taking the old pad out and cleaning up most of the glue I was thinking it sure does look a lot cleaner with no pad and the pad appears to be very cheap thin foam, so has anyone removed it and driven their car without it, how much noisier is it ?

POST 2Original post

Bumping this thread as it's relevant to my interests now. Any chance someone has input on this one? Thanks!

POST 3Original post

It's probably more sound deadening than insulation. A cleaner look is to use DynaMat - peel & stick - or similar product. Jeggs and other high performance shops carry it.

POST 4Original post

Make sure its rated for hot areas. The cheaper sound deadeding will delaminate and fall.

POST 5Original post

The foam totally deteriorated in my black 6TT. I removed it all which is not an easy task and used something called "Thermoguard FR" which is fire resistant mineral wool with one side aluminized. I glued it to the top and back of the engine bay with 3M 90. I sealed around the top and side edges with aluminum tape to try keeping water/oil/etc out. I left holes on the bottom seam to act as drains. The Thermoguard FR is about 1/3 the weight of the factory foam and seems about as efficient at noise reduction. Although I don't have carpets in the car anymore so it's hard to tell.

POST 6Original post

I have an idea and it's what I did with mine since the I did not want to wait for a delivery from Germany nor pay the $400 sticker price for Porsche original foam insulation. Anyhow I jumped on Amazon and bought some Thermo-Tec 14125 sheet of 4 ft x6 ft (thermal silver blanket) for about $93 bucks. The also bought some Design Engineering 010490 Hight Temp Spray Adhesive ($20) on Amazon or Summit racing. Then turned to removing the old foam and tracing the pattern on to the new thermal blanket stuff. I was able to make two full sheets and still have some left over for other projects. Anyhow I double up and glued two blankets to equal out about 3/8 to 1/2 on an inch. Used some Home Depot HVAC silver tape for the edges to have that clean look. Then again used the high temp adhesive to spray glue the two thermal sheets sandwich to the chassis and the heat resistance and sound damping issue solved, IMO. Also, I like the space age silver look inside the engine bay instead of the black foam. It paired well with my Porsche silver 996. So got a nice-looking engine bay firewall insulation at a decent price. It stopped the disintegrating foam from raining down on the motor when doing anything back in there and still protects the rear part of the 996 from any engine heat dissipated by the engine.
