POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I wanted to make a thread to chronicle my ownership of this 996 C4. The 996 came out when I was a sophomore in high school, and I've always wanted one. I had a poster of a silver 996 turbo on my wall. Over the years I've owned probably dozens of VWs of all models. Last year I started getting serious about picking up a 996 so I sold my bagged Volkswagen CC and my wife's VR6 Swapped Cabrio and some wheels and other things to make room for one. My top choice would have been a 996.1 aerokit car but based on my budget I really wanted a 1999 model. I was looking for almost 6 months and had a pretty good pulse on the market when this 99 C4 popped up one Sunday night on Facebook Marketplace. I messaged the guy instantly, sent a deposit and made the 8-hour round trip to Northern Georgia to pick it up 2 days later late on a Tuesday night. Marketplace - 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe The owner of the car was a man in his 70s that had purchased it about 3 months prior from Bring a Trailer. ( 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 6-Speed for sale on BaT ) He said he had owned several late 70s Targas and had wanted to get into another Porsche but at his age it wasn't as refined as his Audi, Mercedes and Saabs. I brought it home on a U-Haul trailer behind my TDI Touareg. Photos are in previous owner's barn and about halfway home on 85 North getting diesel. The previous owner had the IMS retrofit done and clutch replaced with receipt, but there is really no maintenance history beyond that. When I got it back to Charlotte, I dropped it off at the local Porsche dealer for PPI (post-purchase inspection in my case). It turned up quite a few things but nothing particularly alarming. It passed NC State Inspection. I ordered a bunch of maintenance items and trim pieces that need to be replaced and took it out to put some miles on it and take it to our local Cars & Coffee. If you use Instagram my personal IG is bmoyer83 and the one for this car specifically is 996.journey . Here's a photo of my 1977 Rabbit (thread: www.vwvortex.com/threads/1977-og-rabbit.7021106 ) I used to own and the CC I sold recently:

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Also, for fun, here are some photos of me on a high school trip to London in 2000. I made my friends stop at a Porsche dealer to take photos - I am in the driver's seat in the first photo. Making fun of my hair is totally acceptable.

POST 3Original post

Nice 99 , congrats!! BUT, why did the seller flip this 996 3 months after buying it on BAT for a $10,000 loss?

POST 4Original post

Great story, thank you for sharing. Congrats on your 996; really happy for you. Your story resonates, I'm sure, with many in this community. Wish you the best of luck and enjoyable driving in your 996!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17956384

He said he believed he had gotten caught up in the hype and overbid for it and wanted to unload it for what he thought it was worth because of the 113k miles and 0 service history.

POST 6Original post

The previous owner DID the IMS/clutch or just passed the paper along? Just interested.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 17956389, 17956401

Thank you! He paid the selling dealer on BaT to do it - it's on the bill of sale. Seems dubious to me though because it sounds like a used car lot. I will need to investigate.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 17956411

Agree...however, I have zero applied experience on BaT; I'm an auction gawker. Is the BoS descriptive; which IMS "solution" was applied; does it say LN or? Awesome Rabbit BTW. My family had a very similar Cabriolet (after the rabbit; but not far).

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17956425

It actually has the LN sticker/serial with the paperwork but I looked it up on their website and they didn't register it. To be honest I probably won't worry about it until I get an oil leak then drop the trans and see what the situation is. Thanks on the Rabbit. We really enjoyed it. Both my parents had Rabbits when I was born. Ditto my aunts, uncles and Grandmother.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 17956394

Someone buys a 996 on BAT for $32,300. He pays the seller on BAT to install a replacement IMS bearing. 3 months later decides that a 996 is not not for him.. He lists the 996 for sale at $21,000 because he thinks he paid overpaid at $32,300 Okay

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17956496

No evidence to the contrary but I guess time will tell.

POST 12Original post

Congrats, seems too good to be true but I want to trust 70 year old men as they are closer to God then younger men. Got caught up in the hype? The hype is real! He is a bit of a dope but maybe $10k to him is like pennies to me. You definately did well with that car at that price. I'm sure the engine is fine.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17956601

I considered not posting the purchase price I got it for but wanted to for posterity. Maybe one day I will be replacing the engine and can look back at this, then again maybe not.

POST 14Original post

Good score, I am happy for you. Maybe the seller has a lot of money (and as lived well), really didn't care about taking any sort of loss on the car and just decided to pass it on to someone who would enjoy more than he was able too. I mean it is possible. Hell, I wish some wealthy 996 Turbo owner would sell me his car at a ridiculous price. Hell, at this point in my life, if I was wealthy, I would pass along awesome deals like that just to see the look on people faces and the joy in their eyes. I think it would make the world a slightly better place (OK, at least I hope it would).

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 17956606

My friend, you have nothing to worry about. Well done all around. This purchase sounds like something I would do. Agree to price, hope in car immediately and pickup before they can change their mind. We are all jealous

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 17956706

This ^^^ It looks like you got a really nice 996 at 2019 price point.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 17956706, 17956763

There are still deals out there but few and far between. I seemed to have the best luck on FB Marketplace if you know how to search. Just need to be ready to drop what you're doing and go get the car when they come up. For example here's another car I had my eye on. (Not sure if it is still available). https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...5631409510643/

POST 18Original post

Nice car, I also just bought a 99, but more miles than yours. Yep also bought on FB marketplace, and you do have to be fast. Funny you posting photos of you in a 986 in 2000, and now owning one. We must have had similar thoughts over the years, as I also wanted one back when they were new, but obviously couldn't afford one. Living the dream now.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17960625

Living the dream is right! I love driving it and it puts a grin on my face everytime. Cheers to many years/miles of fun.

POST 20Original post

Love those photos - what a trip down memory lane. Seems we are a similar age and I certainly remember the first time I saw 996's sitting on the dealership floor as well. However I was in the romantic city of Milwaukee, WI and not London. Congrats on the score, I hope she treats you well. Wishing you many miles in most excellent health!

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update - Last weekend I took it to Cars & Coffee in Charlotte. It was a pretty good turnout but the 34 degree weather scared some people off I think. Today I'm planning to go for a drive to Morrow Mountain - a little bit over an hour away and stretch the car's legs. It's a beautiful part of NC with some nice roads so I will take some pictures. This week I also replaced some maintenance items and did some small repairs including: Replaced cigarette lighter outlet, Clear/European side markers, new tag lights, passenger rear seatbelt buckle that was damaged, serpentine belt, air filter, and a new cowl panel because it was super faded (the seal was very difficult to install on the new cowl). I have a bunch more lined up for the coming week.

POST 22Original post

Wow, glad to hear you are enjoying it and chipping away at some maintenance.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update 1/29/23 - 114,304 miles. I've owned the 996 for a little over a year now. My wife and I have taken it on several trips to include Helen, GA and the Blue Ridge Parkway. We're getting ready to take it to Atlanta next month to visit the Porsche Experience Center for my 40th birthday. I haven't driven it as much as I'd like this year (maybe 1,000 miles) because I was finishing up my MBA and I have teenage daughters now who participate in several sports. I finished my MBA in August so I'm hoping to be able to drive it a bunch more this year and get to more shows and events. The only time it let me down was the way back from the Blue Ridge when the water pump decided to leak. Luckily, I noticed it right away and had it towed home. (Getting an AWD 20+ year old Porsche flat-bedded an hour home by AAA on a Sunday afternoon was a nightmare). Otherwise, it's been an absolute joy to drive and I couldn't be happier. I've done quite a few maintenance items, repairs, and upgrades since my last post (I'm sure I'm forgetting some): PCCM+ New engine mounts 997 shifter Driver's power mirror switch and trim Hazard switch (had a crack in the trim) Wheels refinished New Carrera 4 center caps New Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires 42 Draft Design 15mm spacers front and rear Sanded and clear coated the headlights New ignition switch New alternator cable (fixed slow cranking) New water pump and thermostat Last year I had the vanity tag EGGZLNT but it was time to renew and I found 99SECHS and just pulled the trigger the other day. Some photos from the past year:

POST 25Original post

Thanks for keeping us up to date. I've got a 99' (early build) arctic C2 cab with 100k miles. Had it a few months and love it. Have some similar updates to make as you (just did motor mounts this weekend).

@Ben8jam Welcome to the club! Let me know if you have any questions as you go. Happy to help.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update 2/9/23 - I removed the front bumper cover and replaced the faded lower grill trim. While I was in there, I removed the radiator shrouds and loosened the AC condensers and washed the radiators and condensers. I couldn't believe how much debris was hiding back there. Also replaced a few pushpins in the fender wells.

POST 28Original post

Is all that debris behind the radiators? i peered in the vents and don't see anything but wonder if i need to pull them off.

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18622642

Yes a lot of that was sandwiched between the condenser and radiator. Really glad I did it.

POST 30Original post

There is usually a lot more debris between the radiator and the condenser than you will see on the front of the condenser. It is a good idea to pull the bumper cover, loosen the condenser and clean the radiators at least annually. This will help your engine temps and also extend the life of your radiators (corrosion damage from all the debris retaining moisture). MARK

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update 5/15/23 - 115,228 miles - Been a busy few months. I drove the 996 down to the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta for my 40th birthday and drove a 992 Carrera 4S on the track. I also joined a local car club called Cars & Cappuccino. I removed the flap behind the heater core and re-foamed it, had the window tint removed, and this past weekend I replaced the plugs and did an oil change. Someone previously had installed single electrode platinum plugs. The idle is a lot smoother now. I planned to replace the spark plug tubes but when I got in there I realized the mufflers really would need to come off, so I am saving that for another day. There was almost no oil in the tubes anyway. This coming weekend we are headed to Helen, GA for Alpine Volks Fair. It's been a tradition for my wife and I and friends for more than 10 years now. Always enjoying getting together with friends every May.

POST 32Original post

Very nice! I recently picked up an 01 C2 in Guards red. First thing I did was blow out the leaves from the radiators. Car went to the bodyshop yesterday for some paint refresh, cant wait to have it back!
