Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The tensioners themselves might still be OK, although if you are getting chain rattle at cold start, replacing the tensioners

Suggestion
If you are getting black bits, that could be the IMS tensioner pad, but that pad cannot be replaced without splitting the case.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
When I bought my 996 three years ago, the car was in a remote area and there was only one shop that could do a PPI, and they didn't check cam deviation. I didn't know it was an issue on these cars.
I later found deviation on one of the banks to be cresting 10 degrees and approaching 12, so I took it to a reputable shop. They found plastic in the oil filter from the chain guides and recommended replacing them, so we did.
Deviation went back down to zero before approaching 8 degrees again in the subsequent year. I took it back to the shop and they said the oil scavenge pump was dragging and forcing the cam gear to spin the engine out of time. Replaced the scavenge pump, deviation dropped back down close to zero.
Now, one year later, I'm finding brown flecks of plastic in the oil again. Any ideas what could be causing it? When I looked back over the paperwork for the chain guides, I noticed they didn't replace the tensioners. Should this have been done?
Thanks!
Well in my opinion if the tension pads on the solenoids have not been changed then I would suspect them as being the culprit of the brown pieces of plastic.
Here is what my old ones looked like, when I replaced them and I also have a picture of what the new ones look like to compare with.
New replacement pads (Porsche) almond & light brown colored. Evidence of wear on original (brown) pads.
Solenoid pads (brown), a chain rail (long brown part) and chain tensioner (black).
On the early engine, there are four total tensioner pads, top and bottom per side. If those were replaced, brown bits might just still be leftover in the engine. I had this happen to me. After a couple track days and oil/filter changes, the brown bits stopped showing up.
If you are getting black bits, that could be the IMS tensioner pad, but that pad cannot be replaced without splitting the case.
The tensioners themselves might still be OK, although if you are getting chain rattle at cold start, replacing the tensioners
could
resolve that issue, but there is no guarantee that will happen. Old tensioners can leak, and they are at the end of the oil pressure system, so they receive oil last, after everything else has gotten oil.
