I had my instrument cluster replaced under warranty after it had gone on the fritz a couple of times.
Leading evidence: 'Replace instrument cluster' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check because the car's mileage is noted at each service' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. That's a great check because the car's mileage is noted at each service.

Before I wrote the check, my local dealer ran the VIN and could tell me all warranty service performed on the car to date.

Does PPI check the odometer reading on inspection?

Suggestion
The device is conected behing the cluster if the car has no OBD and DME on that car doesn't record the mileage as well on modern cars they connect this deevice (seems like diagnosis tool) or a PC through the OBD and the program changes the new mileage everywhere cluster, DME, etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was just wondering how easy it would be to roll back the mileage on 996's and earlier models. How do you check for roll backs????
Cheers and thanks in advance
Patrick
I had my instrument cluster replaced under warranty after it had gone on the fritz a couple of times. The service manager told me that odometer info is stored in the car's DME so it would seem unlikely that you or anyone would be able to roll back the mileage.
Thats what I thought as well, but I was told that with today's computer systems and software that it is possible. Does PPI check the odometer reading on inspection?
The reason why I ask is because I am looking at purchasing an older model 911 and I just want to make certain.
Thanks again
Around here (Europe) you can get your car "clocked" for 70 bucks, any car as long as it has been launched in the market at least 6 months ago (thats the time they take to break the codes). The device is conected behing the cluster if the car has no OBD and DME on that car doesn't record the mileage as well on modern cars they connect this deevice (seems like diagnosis tool) or a PC through the OBD and the program changes the new mileage everywhere cluster, DME, etc.
I've seen it being done and these guys take 1 min!!!
Carfax will tell you stuff like that. Service and mileage will be reported. Also, if you know where the car was serviced they will have record of the mileage at each in/out occurance.
Is there documentation with the car (service reciepts, etc.)?
Just how low is the mileage. Look at brake pedal, under carriage, brade pad wear, tire condition/brand, interior, cabin filter to see if the signs of wear matches the mileage. For example, if the pedal pads are brand new or worn to much for the mileage, be suspecious. Also check for vehicle history with DMV, carfax, and local dealer.
In the US the penalities are so draconian for rolling back the odometer that almost no one does it now adays. The risk/reward ratio is definately skewed to the risk side. Many years ago the practice was almost routine.
It would only be a question if the car came from a private owner with no service records. Can't the dealer track the service history of any recent Porsche, not just the ones sold there. Since people and their cars are mobile during the warranty period, it seems like a necessity.
However, if there is something that makes you suspicious, walking away seems the best response.
What triggered the question?
I purchased my car used from a private seller in another state. Before I wrote the check, my local dealer ran the VIN and could tell me all warranty service performed on the car to date. Just another avenue to explore......
I am planning to purchase either a 993TT or a 996TT. I would like to find a vehicle with low km's. Certainly the issue of odometer roll backs does come to mind.
With respect to the service history. Playing devils advocate, if I purchase a car with 5000km and I drive the car to 15000km's without any service being done at Porsche, rather serviced at an independent, then just before I sell the vehicle I roll it back to 6400km's and I get it serviced at Porsche, I think the prospective buyer will never know. If you do this several times a vehicle could have tens of thousand km's and yet the service records shows everything to be in order.
Cheers and thanks
Wormdog,
That's certainly possible, but a lot of work and risk for a small amount of money. My point is that there should be regular DEALER service intervals which allow easy tracking of the car's mileage at logical intervals. I think you can easily tell a 5,000 mile car from a 45,000 mile car. Pitting of the windshield, seat wear, scuffing of the sills
If there is anything suspicious about the car, what would cause you to even consider it? There are lots of cars which show up at the dealership like clockwork with full documentation. Good luck. AS
Not very easy on a 996 since the miles are stored in teh DME. In the 993 maybe so since the dials are analog. But then again, I don't know anything about the 993 models.
Okay...okay...very old topic and post. Holy moly...an almost 18 year old thread brought back to life like it just happened. You got to love these old posts....
