This probably the best idea since I live a few miles from Barber where Porsche host their advanced diving class.
Leading evidence: 'best idea since i live a few miles' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best idea since i live a few miles' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair bill right' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm not so smart, so I'd probably put it towards a set of wheels.....and then end up with an unexpected repair bill right after buying those wheels.

improve intake air flow by replacing the factory plastic "T" style design with a more efficient, cast aluminum "Y" design.

In my opinion, you don't need any bolt on to get more out of your 996 until you can run your current 996 at 10/10th.

If your mind is set on performance mods, I'd suggest you look for for used parts to keep your overall costs down.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have decided to invest about $1000 in my 2004 996.2 coupe. So many options, so I thought I would seek some advice. What I am considering are the IPD plenums. My exhaust is stock and likely to stay that way or at most install Fisters. So will any enhanced air intake make much difference? The base bolt-on plenum fits the stock throttle body. Not much of a jump in cost to go the competition plenum with 82mm throttle body over kill?? There is some discussion on Rennlist but not recent.

Thanks,

Amigo, I'd save the $1K. I don't think a new plenum is going to make ANY perceptible difference. Messing with throttle bodies and plenums on computerized cars (i.e. no DIY tune you can tinker with to capitalize on any increase in available CFM) just isn't going to make enough power to justify the expense.
I'd go with a Fisterized exhaust from your local muffler whisperer and $800 in the bank. Or a wicked black tint on your back and side rear windows. Blacking out that back window will make your car at least 20% faster than spending the same money on intake parts.
Don't waste your time with plenum being your first mod. If anything, that should be your last mod. I have headers, intake, plenum, tb, pulley, cat bypass. 200 Cell cats or cat bypass will offer the most noticeable difference, performance wise.
You're doing it all wrong. Leave everything alone and just start saving up $50 more so you can get 3 Jirish "Premium" oil changes.
Do you spend a lot of time driving at speed and/or doing track events and wishing you could corner just a bit faster? If so, all of the "+1" suspension ideas are great. Otherwise, not so much. You were asking about plenums, which makes me think you were asking for a way to make more power for under a grand.
One thing that gets very little attention here on RL is the underdrive pulley. Ounce for ounce and dollar for dollar, an underdrive pulley is the best performance bang for the buck in my opinion. By reducing "parasitic" draw, an underdrive pulley frees up power your engine is already making, which is a lot less daunting than adding all of the stuff necessary for the engine to make MORE power.
I don't know if it's the right part for you, but if I had to pick a SINGLE part to install that is guaranteed to make a positive difference in the amount of power the car actually puts down, it would be an underdrive pulley.
A 50-shot of nitrous will also provide a perceptible difference at less than a grand - so I guess what would be really useful is for OP to tell us what he's hoping for.
"I have decided to invest about $1000 in my 2004 996.2" - but I know nothing of OP's car. A new water pump and a detail might be the best way to spend $1K.
OP, what's the overall goal and what condition is the car currently in?
A smart person would probably just bank the grand towards future repairs.
I'm not so smart, so I'd probably put it towards a set of wheels.....and then end up with an unexpected repair bill right after buying those wheels.

Boom.

High Performance Driving Experience is only $100.
Put the rest towards tires and a really good alignment.
In my opinion, you don't need any bolt on to get more out of your 996 until you can run your current 996 at 10/10th.
Agree with the rest that plenum alone is not worth 1k. If your mind is set on performance mods, I'd suggest you look for for used parts to keep your overall costs down. Here what I decided on:
- IPD plenum
- EVOMS intake
- Schnell headers
- Gemballa mufflers (car already had them when I bought it)
- FVD Brombacher flash
I spent 900 on the tune and another 1,000 for the three other parts combined. You'll find similar deals if you just keep looking. For what I got for 1,900, I'm happy!
Yep - fister mod - you may not be faster but you will sound faster - and new motor mounts diy if you didn't already do ... Then spend the rest on a DE weekend ..
I usually focus on preventive maintenance and wear & tear vs. mods at first. But if the PMs & W/T are all in order, I'd focus on the exhaust system (cat specifically) and what Schnelly said, then suspension.
The faint of heart need not post here. Now that we have established that I don't know what I'm doing, at least compared to the knowledge many posses, I do appreciate those who made suggestions. I do not plan on tracking the car other than an upcoming DE so radical performance improvements would be unused.

This probably the best idea since I live a few miles from Barber where Porsche host their advanced diving class. I think 1 day is about 1K. Thanks for the idea.
As for modifying my base 996.2 I just have an itch to do something. Based on the feedback I'll go with the Fister upgrade just to scratch the itch.
Thanks,
Steve
The pulley ain't a bad idea either, for what it will cost you.
If you do go with a pulley, get one of the really stout ones (like the one pictured here or a solid center). I have seen a post or two of less robust versions fatiguing apart.
As far as learning that you don't know what you're doing - generally the folks who offer the "go to driving school" suggestions mean well, but it can definitely stick in one's craw.

Looks like a good idea, many different sources, do you have one to recommend?

Good investment. "
IPD Plenums
improve intake air flow by replacing the factory plastic "T" style design with a more efficient, cast aluminum "Y" design. The IPD Plenums distribute the air flow more effectively by using a true merge collector and reducing pressure drop at the throttle body inlet. This innovative Y diversion area of the IPD Plenums split and channel intake air flow reducing air flow turbulence and increasing air flow velocity. This superior and proven design ultimately results in considerably power gains throughout the horsepower and torque curves."
It's most certainly a good upgrade to do with that budget.

I agree with track time but since thats not what was asked... For about $1000 springs and wheel spacers (doesnt cover labor) will make your car look $10000 better. If you want power, test pipes are about the only thing that will give you tangible gains for that money.
997 stock shifter console from suncoast porsche. Installed mine last night and it improves my driving experience sooooo much. You do not realize how the old worn 996 shifter is detracting from the driving experience. About $275 on your door step. Still some left for hookers and blow.
