I installed a mirror mount radar detector and wanted to add an on/off switch in the horseshoe.
Leading evidence: 'Install mirror mount radar detector and wanted' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install mirror mount radar detector and wanted' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
The only issue with this set up is that it will not de energize the radar detector until power is removed from the circuit (ignition reset).

Suggestion
Like I said, you could just use the 12 VDC and ground from the cigarette lighter.

Suggestion
You could use the switch that you have, but you need to make a simple circuit for it.

Suggestion
I can't remember if the cigarette lighter is switched or not, but if it is not, then you'll need to use a switched power, which is right in the horseshoe on another switch.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I installed a mirror mount radar detector and wanted to add an on/off switch in the horseshoe. I have an extra spoiler switch but it is momentary. Been looking for one that will switch on and stay on until off is pushed. Searched the forum but thought one of you guys my have an idea.
Thanks.....
You could use the switch that you have, but you need to make a simple circuit for it. You need a power supply and ground (could get it right off the lighter or other adjacent switch), then add a maintaining relay.
When you press the switch, it energizes the relay coil, which then closes a contact to keep the relay energized after releasing the momentary switch. I did this on my old Audi A8 when retrofitting face lift switches to a non face lift car and had the same issue as you are faced with.
I just used a basic relay:
Like I said, you could just use the 12 VDC and ground from the cigarette lighter.
The only issue with this set up is that it will not de energize the radar detector until power is removed from the circuit (ignition reset). Otherwise you would need another contact in the maintaining circuit to de-energize it. I can't remember if the cigarette lighter is switched or not, but if it is not, then you'll need to use a switched power, which is right in the horseshoe on another switch.
"Why not just wire it into an ign switched wire in the overhead console?"
That's what I did. Detector turns off and on when I stop or start the car. Never have to think about it.
Yeah this is how it's normally done. The only time is if you wanted to turn off the detector in a stealth way while driving. For example, if a cop was following you. Not a big deal around here but might be a big deal in states where radar detectors are illegal and you still wanted to use one.
By your right foot behind the pull off panel there is a plug that comes live as you switch on the ignition. I use that for my radar and my GPS. No thinking about it. Oh and I say Bollucks to the states that have made the radar detector illegal. I will take that risk. Not that I ever leave the state I am in. PA.
