Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello fellow 996 enthusiasts. I tried searching for a thread to answer my question about soaking wet carpet and mat behind the passenger seat in my 2004 996 cab. It doesn't appear that rain is coming in from the cab top so I'm thinking about dirty drain tubes. Are they in the rear and could that be the source of the wet carpeting? I've read about drain tubes needing cleaning but the soaking seems out of proportion to a plugged tube. The carpet is soaked and the rear mat is heavy- full of water. My 996 is garaged about 50% of the time so anything is possible I guess. Thank you for feedback and ideas about my problem. /X3

POST 2Original post

Hey, This just happened to me. Rear passenger was soaked with water. There is a lot of info out there. For me, I took out the rear speaker and took a funnel and poured a small amount of water in the collection trap that the drain leads into and looked under the car. No water came through the drain-then reached my hands down into the trap and it was full of leaves. I also pulled the rear wheel ,removed the lining and cleaned the drain(it was clear for the most part) Did this same routine on the drivers side. no more water( took over a week in Florida sun with top down to get rid of ALL of the water).Pull seats if you can

As suggested already, there are lots of threads about blocked or broken tubes, but that's not the only problem. I took everything apart (interior panels and seats, wheel well liner) to watch exactly where the water coursed through the splash trays and drains. Even after fixing the common problem - the black plastic tube that connects the upper tray to the lower tray behind the speaker, I still had a problem. While I had cleaned out the drain tubes right down to outlet in the wheel well, we finally found (with one person in the car and one with the hose) that the water was still actually backing up from the outlet then overflowing. There's a thin rubber disk in the outlet that acts as a flap. Water pressure pushes it open. I'm not sure if it's there to prevent water or perhaps insects or small critters from crawling up it, or perhaps just to restrict or direct the flow. Mine were actually sealing the hole when they got wet. Here's a thread with some pics. Another Cab drain thread - Rennlist - Porsche Discussion Forums You'll also see in there that water was in the cavity under the seat. While you're drying stuff out, I'd have look in there too.

Common problem. As mentioned, make sure to clean the drain holes behind the wheel well liner. That's were mine collected leafy debris.

POST 7Original post

How are you drying it out? My Golf has a major leak (I think sunroof drains but thats not important right now!) and I have been trying without much success to dry out the carpets. Right now I have the seat out and the carpet pulled up with towels shoved between the floor and the jute backing, between the backing and the top carpet, and on top of the carpet. Still wet! Someone suggested some baking soda but it just clumped up and made the wet carpets have streaks of white. Someone else suggested dry rice, which did absolutely nothing. I dont want to have to take the entire interior apart to remove the whole carpet and leave it in the sun. How are you drying yours out?

POST 8Original post

You can put a dehumidifier inside the car with all windows up (sealed), or you can open it up and use fans. I would also try a shop vac to get as much water as possible. Depends on humidity. If its raining non-stop, humidifier. If I hot as hell outside, fans. You also want to make sure there isnt water down under the driver seat where the immobilizer sits. That thing is not cheap to fix!

POST 9Original post

I chased a leak for years. Ultimately I found the source was the cabin air filter in the frunk. It had no real cover on it, and water would come down the windshield, under my hood, and find a way onto, and through, my air filter and into the ductwork, and thus into the cabin. I made a cover for the dumb filter out of a Tupperware lid. My wife is still searching for that lid.

The video gives an excellent deep dive to rear drain and tube problems and fixes as well as an overview to cabriolet top repair. Nice he differentiates the hydraulic cabriolet system with the clamshell motor and cables. /X3

Meh, just ignore the water in the floorboard. What's the worst that could happen? Yogi fixed this in only 5 short episodes.

Short is a relative term. 😂. that rusted out piece is now going to be a fixture on my wall. Like a deer head. And if you ever need some donor metal Ive got whats left from my repair job. Its a lawn ornament at the moment; along with a catalytic converter I cant sell as scrap because of all the thievery going on.

POST 16Original post

Have you thought about trying to recover the precious metal(s)? You seem like the kind of person that would try something like that and actually pull it off.
