The steering angle sensor actual value must be checked after a suspension alignment which resulted in no changes being made to the wheel alignment values.

That said it does not normally get out of whack unless the angle sensor was replaced, or the "straight ahead" position changed by re-clocking the steering wheel, or re-placing certain parts that have to do with the straight ahead position.

Suggestion

But I have seen some half-assed alignments that didn't have the steering wheel centered during the alignment, then instead of redoing the alignment, they re-set the steering wheel position which f&&ks up the steering angle calibration.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi - Does anyone know if our cars automatically recalibrate the steering angle sensor after an alignment. That is what a mechanic I worked with said, but I am challenging that claim because I ran across an old post that said: In the 996 factory workshop manual it says "The steering angle sensor must be recalibrated if the previous wheel adjustment values for vehicles with PSM were changed! The steering angle sensor actual value must be checked after a suspension alignment which resulted in no changes being made to the wheel alignment values. The Porsche System Tester 2 is necessary to calibrate the steering angle sensor and to check the steering angle actual value." The poster said that their ABS/PSM issues were fixed once they had this done. I have been having all sorts of ABS/PSM issues as some of you have seen in other posts of mine and I'm hoping this is the issue. I had to swap out my Ohlins with the recall and then get an alignment. Please advise...

POST 2Original post

The steering angle sensor does not automatically calibrate it's self. That said it does not normally get out of whack unless the angle sensor was replaced, or the "straight ahead" position changed by re-clocking the steering wheel, or re-placing certain parts that have to do with the straight ahead position. But I have seen some half-assed alignments that didn't have the steering wheel centered during the alignment, then instead of redoing the alignment, they re-set the steering wheel position which f&&ks up the steering angle calibration. When in doubt, have it checked. PIWIS or equivalent will be needed.
