When this happened to me it was the clear film on my driver's side mirror had started to peel just slightly and had created a harmonic vibration at speed.
Leading evidence: 'clear film' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'clear film' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check though' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Another threads talked about it being a window seal issue and sure enough I had mine changed recently and they installed a one with a more rounded profile.

I has cleaning the window and leaned on it and it moved a decent amount.

Unfortunately I believe it also requires removing the windshield to replace the windshield frame.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a '04 40th Anniversary and when coming home from Werks Monterrey a high pitched humm starts coming from the dash area but only above 85 MPH. I say its a vibration hmm so I started looking for possible culprits- I changed out the grommets and tork screws for the cowels that are on the back of the frunk near the battery box. Nothing- that didn't help. Any other ideas. I apologize if this has been discussed- I searched and could find this issue in or interwebs. Im a newb and this is post one I think- I have had the car about 1.5 months and its baddass but this hmm...
I appreciate your help,
TG
Nothing common jumps to mind.
You may need to get out the felt tape and find the culprit that is rubbing or vibrating and isolate it.
Someone here mentioned that there is a TSB for rattles and noises. I haven't seen it, but maybe someone else here has?
Congrats on the car. Enjoy that x51!
Are you for real? Where are you driving that you can go 85 mph consistently enough to notice a hum coming from the dash? At 85, things start to get a bit tricky, at least on public roads, and the last thing I think you would be focused on is some nefarious hum.......
Also, have no idea what grommets and "tork" (torx) screws you are talking about.
Umm, sounds like California...
Leave his speed between him and the CHP. I guarantee many of us here have seen 85 regularly.
No Porsche I've ever driven has an issue at 85, if yours does, it may need some love.
I understood the OP to mean that there are plastic trim panels under the windshield that are held in with torx fasteners.
Cut the new dude some slack, eh?
Okay. Did not sleep well and need more coffee this morning.
To OP: It would help to know where you think the hum is coming from, i.e., inside/outside, top of dash, bottom of dash. Describe the high pitched hum better. Could it be wind noise? Tires and road noise? Any recent work done on the car? Radio on or off? Windows open, cracked open or closed?
So the Hmm sounds like its coming from the vents but i would say no association with the HVAC system and definitely a vibration hmm. Ok I assume that removing that plastic is not a big deal as I like the felt tape idea?
Thanks all
Noises in cars are notoriously difficult to find. Is your HVAC system completely off when you notice the hum? The center vents or side vents? Are the vents open or closed? Windows rolled up? Might even help to isolate the hum if you take a passenger along to listen while you are driving.
Flow of traffic on some of the highways and freeways here is easily 85MPH. The speed limit is 75; 10 over isn't exactly unheard of. The 1 and 2 lanes of I5 between Orange County and San Diego often run at 95-100MPH...
I have the exact same issue on my 1999 996 that I bought a month back. Mine starts the noise at 70 mph and gets less at over 85ish. It comes from around the front window on the drivers side where the windshield meets the dash/hood. annoying for sure. I looked around and found nothing out of sorts. I too would love to figure out what is causing this. I heard it replicated in a YouTube video of a guy tracking his 996, granted he is going much faster but it is the exact same sound I get at 70.
https://youtu.be/1VAV4dqOlRA
at 6:20 the hum I am describing kicks in.
Not sure where to find it, but Porsche had a TSB (technical service bulletin) about Noise in the Door/Trim Panel, A Pillar. It is TSB 7057. Maybe a Porsche dealer can bring that up. I believe it involves replacing the windshield frame support and trim piece. Unfortunately I believe it also requires removing the windshield to replace the windshield frame.
Also check the rubber seal around your window glass (front and rear, sound can do wacky stuff..)
When this happened to me it was the clear film on my driver's side mirror had started to peel just slightly and had created a harmonic vibration at speed. Disappeared completely when I peeled it off.
I do have very dated, likely 3M protective film on my hood and mirrors- that could be the culprit Now that I have the Fister exhaust the hmm is not so bad ;>)
So this exact thing has just started happening in my 2002 996 with 281km kilometres on the clock. The noise starts about 120 kmh , stops and starts but does not change pitch and it stays pretty consistent at 140 kph.
Not engine speed dependent at all. I put in the clutch and coasted at 140 kph downhill and the whine stayed constant.
My old clear bra is in tough shape, but I don't think there are any floppy edges....I've been slowly trying to remove it in fact and it is on there really solid. Will check though..
Noise sounds like it's coming from behind center dash vent..hvac on or off. Windows open or closed...
Did you ever figure yours out OP?
I regularly drive my car at 85-90 on the New York State thruway! I was just down in Florida and drove my Hyundai Venue rental 85-90 on the highway between Daytona and Orlando several times! Getting 37 mpg!!
Another threads talked about it being a window seal issue and sure enough I had mine changed recently and they installed a one with a more rounded profile.
I ran some experiments last night with painters tape and it looks like this might be my issue. Hard to get up to those speeds multiple times to run the tests so not conclusive yet.
OK so here was my situation- Same humming from the dash area when I would be at 85 MPH the hmm would start. One day I figured out that the below- Windshield Cowl Cover was broken at the passenger side. I has cleaning the window and leaned on it and it moved a decent amount. I found this thread on Rennlist and it was huge help:

Interesting thanks for the post. My cowl cover does seem pretty solid but I'll check it out.
Interestingly I did notice that one of my wipers seems to have an air deflector and the other does not. Could this be related?
