I thought it was the high tone horn or maybe even something coming from the stereo but I pulled those fuses and it didnt change anything.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Recently purchased a 1999 996. When I get the car up to speed, I sometimes hear a fairly loud higher pitch noise coming from the front. A run up to 75mph makes it happen every time, goes away when you drop below 66. The other day I heard it at 54 and at 41 briefly. It does not change tone or pitch, ever. Engine RPM doesnt change it (at 75+ in different gears you still get it). I dont think it is wind since it has now shown up at lower speeds... I thought it was the high tone horn or maybe even something coming from the stereo but I pulled those fuses and it didnt change anything. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Condenser fan maybe? Have you check all the fasteners of the belly pan up front? Also, check the mounting points of the wiper cowl. The ends tend to break and float up.

POST 3Original post

Two of the things that will do that . Frunk lid leading edge above the bumper edge. Windshield trim very slightly lifting. Try painters tape over the bumper/lid edge. Also around the windshield edge

POST 4Original post

You are not by any chance referring to the Getrag whine in 5th gear? Every 5 speed or 6 speed getrag I've driven has it to some extent in 5th gear. Whether its a Porsche, Ford Pickup, BMW,, just my experience..

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16299102

it doesnt change when I change gears. Ill try taping the front hood area and see if its wind noise.

POST 6Original post

Are the front tires worn? Look for a strange wear pattern.

POST 7Original post

Differential in our pickup whines between 55-70 mph, varies in intensity with throttle position. Maybe front wheel bearings? We got new ones and will install when rebuilding front suspension.

Also around the windshield

POST 9Original post

Just tossing it out ,, A/C on or off? Expansion valve?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I taped the windshield gasket and it went away.

POST 11Original post

Good to know! Porsche has something in common with my Jeep.. LOL

POST 12Original post

Posted in another thread about how this is happening to me...I had my windshield replaced recently and a different style gasket was used.. Going to tape mine and see what happens.
