Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm stumped, my taillights have been acting strangely. Here is the symptom- turn car on (99 C2 Canadian version with daytime running lights) and the taillights come on as they should. Sometimes they stay on and act normally but other times one side will cease functioning and go dark. Sometimes it's the driver side and other times it's the passenger side. I removed the headlight switch and sprayed contact cleaner in the post hole as I had read about before but this didn't seem to help. Any experience with this issue anyone?

Your switch probably isn't causing the symptoms you describe. It doesn't actually switch the lights on, its just telling relays what to do, and they do the actual switching. What I would do is check the wiring and bulbs in the tail lights first. Chances are the soy-based insulation has degraded or you have a bad connection in the tail light assembly.

POST 3Original post

Electrical lighting gremlins are frequently caused by the electrical portion of the ignition switch. Try replacing that. It's on the back side of the key cylinder, and can be accessed by reaching under the dash. It's a tight fit, and tricky to access. Search the forum for some good DIY's.

POST 5Original post

I had the same issue. Finally traced it to the internal wiring in the headlights. As someone noted, the insulation crumbled off in my hands. I guess I would call it dry rot. Lots of wires touching. I used electrical tape, liquid electrical tape and heat wrap to separate the wires. I have had no issues since then.

The insulation is soy-based in the 996 and in a number of other European cars from this era, and degrades with exposure to heat or moisture.

POST 7Original post

While ignition and lighting were both damaged in my car, I can confirm that BOTH can cause the issues you're describing. My light switch was so far gone that it literally disintegrated inside. When I shook it it made a rattling sound! I turned it over and shook out all the plastic bits. It looked like sand. The symptoms were faulty lights (headlights would turn on but not the side makers, etc.) The ignition switch caused issues with starting the car and getting it to think it's running. I replaced it and my interior lights started working, it started dinging and beeping again, etc. I still can't lock my doors with the remote but I think that's an immobilizer issue.
