I saw a YouTube video where someone used a jack to raise the wheel carrier up while car was on stands.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ive read here and elsewhere that after changing out the suspension control arms, you need to wait to torque anything that rides on a bushing until the car is on the ground. My question is, how the heck do you get a torque wrench back to where the control arms mount while the car is on its wheels? It doesnt look like there is enough space. I saw a YouTube video where someone used a jack to raise the wheel carrier up while car was on stands. Is that a better approach?

POST 2Original post

Quotes source post: 16660698

I check to see where the wheel is when the car is lowered on the ground. Then jack up the car, then use another jack to jack up the wheel to where it should be. Then tighten the suspension mounting hardware.

POST 3Original post

Havent done it myself yet but I assume this is where ramps would be helpful. Just lower the car on to ramps, suspension is carrying full load and you have space under the car to torque down to spec.

POST 5Original post

Heres how I do it. I have since built another set of the wood platforms and use them. They are also handy for getting the car in the air for any purpose not needing tires off. It takes a lot less time than getting the car on stands as that takes multiple trips with the jack and placing stands before completely raised to desired height. As the platforms don't need the jacking point for support, you just jack from one side rear until desired height, place platforms and repeat other side.

are those 2x10s up front? Stacked 4 high, does that give you enough room to make tie rod adjustments?

POST 7Original post

I did mine on a 4 post lift, but if you don't have one then the wood blocks are a great way to do this.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 16661136

Yeah, think 2x10 is right. I have since added to my stacking ability And have a boatload of pieces cut. Leave the pieces with the tire stops on the top and stack away. Works great.

POST 9Original post

I've said it before, ramps come in handy with these cars...4x beam cut offs work too!

Youre right, according to this photo from the Bentley manual. it seems to me that the easiest thing to do would be to leave the car on stands and use my jack to bring the arm up to the right level. That leaves the wheel out of the way for wrench access.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 16677266

Yes! Thats exactly the picture from the manual and what I did. Worked great and cars still running well.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What did you use as the jack point - the spot under the ball joint at the end of the coffin arm?

POST 14Original post

I used my floor jack and raised up the suspension control arm. Just find a good place. It is not hard to do.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 16678600

Yes under the ballpoint. Put a block of wood between the jack and the control arm.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16679419

Ive got a hockey puck on the jack that should do the job. I just need to get a ball joint removal tool and a torque wrench that goes above 85 lb/ft.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 16679875

Why not a pickle fork?

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 16680672

Fork is fine if you dont mind destroying the joint or the cover. The puller doesnt require room for a hammer blow and some folks may want to save the boot and the joint.

My Local NAPA loaned me a PF and it popped off easily. I'd definitely use a bearing puller if reusing the ball joint though. See if your local parts store has a loaner/rental program and save some money!
