You've got a couple things loose there but moving a pulley back and forth like a DJ is not not how you check for wear.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All Need help with my 2000 996 pulley noise.. I have attached 2 videos, one with the drive belt off and one with engine running. https://youtu.be/8v6BZHALjr8 https://youtu.be/jYuLbg1Xk3s

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks.... I order a mechanics stethoscope today should be here tomorrow. The lower idle pulley sound the worst. Is the A/C pulley wheel supposed to be that loose?

POST 4Original post

You've got a couple things loose there but moving a pulley back and forth like a DJ is not not how you check for wear. The alternator sounds pretty crunchy to me.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got my mechanics stethoscope I think most of the noise is coming of the alternator shaft bearing not the alternator overrun/freewheel pulley. The alternator is charging at 14 volts. What should I do? What will happen if I do nothing? Can I lube the alternator shaft bearing? Should I replace the alternator? Video of engine pulleys and bearings https://youtu.be/8v6BZHALjr8

Buy a new alternator or have a shop replace the bearings in your current one. If it were me, Id replace the whole thing because alternators fail commonly, eventually.

POST 7Original post

Good advice above. The alternator shaft bearing can freeze up and it will take out your serpentine belt in the process. You can get a new alternator off Amazon for a pretty decent price.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks.. Which alternator would you get off of Amazon? https://www.amazon.com/s?k=porsche+996+alternator&crid=2WHPE1VEUIXM7&sprefix=porsche+996+alter%2Caps%2C208&ref=nb_sb_ss_organic-diversity_1_17 https://www.amazon.com/s?k=porsche+996+alternator&crid=2WHPE1VEUIXM7&sprefix=porsche+996+alter%2Caps%2C208&ref=nb_sb_ss_organic-diversity_1_17

POST 9Original post

Have the one in the car rebuilt or buy a new Bosh one.

If it were me, I'd get this one: https://www.amazon.com/ALTERNATOR-PORSCHE-BOXSTER-MANUAL-TRANSMISSION/dp/B0076O3BXG/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=porsche+996+alternator+new+bosch&qid=1591198255&sr=8-7 https://www.amazon.com/ALTERNATOR-PORSCHE-BOXSTER-MANUAL-TRANSMISSION/dp/B0076O3BXG/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=porsche+996+alternator+new+bosch&qid=1591198255&sr=8-7 ...actually, with all the fake stuff on Amazon these days, I'd probably get it from Pelican Parts or FCP Euro, or Warehouse33.

POST 11Original post

I would also consider buying one not made in China by Pelican or another source that can validate authentic parts. Im trying harder and harder these days not buying stuff from China.

POST 12Original post

My local guy rebuilt mine with genuine bosch parts for $160.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all: I ordered an alternator from Rare Electrical. It is a brand new Bosch alternator (not rebuilt) for about $232.94 with NO Core Exchange. I get to keep the old one as back up.. I can get the bearings replaced for $80 or rebuilt for $190. I hope it goes OK https://www.rareelectrical.com/i-269...make%3DPORSCHE Some company on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/ALTERNATOR-PORSCHE-BOXSTER-MANUAL-TRANSMISSION/dp/B0076O3BXG/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=porsche+996+alternator+new+bosch&qid=1591198255&sr=8-7 https://www.amazon.com/ALTERNATOR-PORSCHE-BOXSTER-MANUAL-TRANSMISSION/dp/B0076O3BXG/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=porsche+996+alternator+new+bosch&qid=1591198255&sr=8-7
