By the time you do a clutch, aos, new injectors, have heads checked, new bolts gaskets etc, thatd make this an $18-$20k project.

We also tested his AOS and used the Durametric to do Jake's recommended pre-qualification checks.

No question about the changing grade in the Hill Country - that area and Big Bend are some of the best driving regions for our cars.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Doing it Saturday with the engine upside down and sideways on the engine stand was still not easy.
A coworker of my wife has an 02 Lapis Blue C2 MT coupe, with approximately 84K miles, and a dead engine and is looking to sell it as a roller. She will be sending me the mechanic report this week on why the engine is (presumed) dead however she doesn't want to spend any more on the car and is willing to sell as a roller. Any recommendations on a fair selling price range?
TIA
I'd be interested in buying it!
I'm in the Houston area too.
Like other have said, rollers normally run $4-7K.
Funny that I read this seconds after finishing Jake's M96 rebuild series.
I'm itching to start a rebuild.
Houston isn't that far. I have a truck and can get a trailer. If TexSquirrel gets this car, I'm definitely in to come to H town and help turn wrenches some.
Lowpue, I'm 3 hours from Austin, which is a nice drive in a 996.
I have family in Round Rock, so I'm always up for a meet up in Austin.
AnthonyGS, stop by anytime.
I had a local Rennlister stop by last Saturday.
We used my M96 on the engine stand so he could see how to bore scope from the sump.
Cylinder 5 is easy, but 4 & 6 are difficult.
We even pulled the cylinder head off so we could see both sides and it still is really difficult.
When I scoped mine, I spent hours on my back trying to find 6.

We also tested his AOS and used the Durametric to do Jake's recommended pre-qualification checks.
His 996 has passed all the tests so far.
Next is sump drop and bore scoping.
RobbieVan, I'm definitely interested in it if you're not.
Looking forward to more details either way.
Here are the VIN details:
And a couple of photos:
I have not set eyes on this car so have little information - just trying to help someone out. What I do know - there is a clear film on the front of the car that has obviously cracked and yellowed with age. The hood does close (not sure why it was open for these photos). Regarding the engine failure, the mechanic told her: "Upon removal of oil pan we noticed that the engine thrust washer had come loose and fallen off the crankshaft. The motor will need to be replaced but the case itself is still intact and is a usable core"
Can't say I have ever heard of this mode of failure but then I have only been involved with 911's for a few years.
While I would love to dig into a project like this, I have more than enough on my plate right now so am willing to help the owner sell this car.
I can forward the owner's phone number if interested.
No dibs here.
She is wanting $7K.
The shop that did the diagnosis is a good one.
Its probably going to need a crank, and the 996.2 crank is tough to find used and $4k+ new.
That plus Nickies and The IMS Solution and UAOS puts this kinda high to get back on the road.
I would prefer paying less with all those expenses.
Also I’d prefer a 1999 911, or a 1998-1999 Boxster...I already own a 2002.
I would pay $5k, a new shortblock is $9k. By the time you do a clutch, aos, new injectors, have heads checked, new bolts gaskets etc, thatd make this an $18-$20k project.
$7k makes it $20-$22k and $22k plus time is way more than its worth on the market.
If it wasnt blue, my offer would be $4k.
I dont see it mentioned above but Just one thing to keep in mind with a roller is that at the end of the day youre still buying a car; Id be curious to know what the condition and maintenance has been like: brakes, tires, suspension, wheels, interior, windows, motor mounts, tie rods, etc. And some of it youre stuck taking the sellers word for it- how was shifting, and A/C.
The seller has extensive service records. (has owned it since 2005)
The car is at a well known indy.
I'm sure they would give you more information...but remember this is a sub-$7K car.
No one is going to go through a lot of hoops to help sell it.
It sounds like it is in good shape, except for the engine.
I hope the owner gets $7K...or close to it.
I'm still considering it.
I've been putting an estimated cost to get it back on the road with what I know and what could-be.
I'm seriously considering this car. I have all of the parts in my possession to get it running again.
If anyone in the Houston area might be willing to help me pull the engine to install my running engine, please PM me. We can figure out the details.
I've been seriously considering making a move to TX anyway, so maybe this would be a good way to get to see the state after fixing the car.
If you guys are going to take a couple of days to pull the engine and replace it. I'm all in for heading that way and lending a hand. I can pass tools, bring tools, and keep you away from the beers until a days work is done. I may or may not be capable with a wrench myself.....
Thats why I said get a bike. If you go around under human power as your motive force youd realize how much isnt flat. Cyclist have a term called false flat. We are the home of the false flat. In TX railroads use pusher engines helpers to move large trains just like the mountains. I have photos. It just looks relatively flat in places.
My comment was meant to be mostly in jest, esp since this roller is in Harris County where the highest elevation is approx 300 ft. In Dallas it would be fun to take 911s on the huge mix-masters, especially at central expressway and LBJ
Yah but it's humid and hot enough there that you can still suffer on a bike
. I've lived all over the state and have probably been in every county at least once, and I'm always surprised how dang hilly it is when I get on my bike, but then again I'm not a pro cyclist or in as good as shape as I was even 6 years ago. I was in a race in Marble Falls 6 years ago where it is hilly and people were crying on their bikes. I was saying "F you hill, I win." at every peak. I was also doing that race on a meniscus torn in two places.
Even good old east TX isn't flat. One of the most brutal rides is in Paris. There is another in Cleburne and another out in Weatherford that can be tough too. Nothing like going up a hill thinking it's flat at the top to make a turn and see you still have another hill to climb and it's over 100 outside. And then there are mountains in West Tx. They ain't very pretty but if you have to ride a bike in them.... they are brutal.
And then there is good old flat I-10 headed out west. Everyone thinks once you leave the Kerville area it's flat. What you don't realize is that you are actually climbing steadily for the next few hundred miles. It's an old continental shelf that is no uplifted which made some of the best oil fields in the world out that way.
I wish it was flat though; I"m a great cyclist when it's flat.
Marble Falls is beautiful, played golf at a great resort there many moons ago. That is hill country area for sure, west of Austin. Flat vs Hilly when talking about riding a bike vs drive a Porsche is really not the same conversation, but i get your point.
Lived in Austin for 15 years and now Htown for the last 8. No question about the changing grade in the Hill Country - that area and Big Bend are some of the best driving regions for our cars.
I do tell everyone that no matter where you live there are two seasons - indoor and outdoor. For us, indoor season starts in late June and usually ends sometime in October....
I did an MS150 training ride that started in Brenham TX (Blue Bell country!) and it started with a nice downhill coast...at the end of the training ride you had to ride UP that hill. It wasn't nearly as much fun! When I used to ride out in West Texas (Midland-Odessa area) it was flat! You had to train for riding in hill by riding INTO the wind. 35 mph wind will wear you out quickly!
Back on topic, kinda.
Someone buy the nice lady's roller.
I'll let you park it at my house if you need to get it picked up from Modern Aircooled right away.
I spoke to the seller. She is not sure if she wants to sell it. She wants to get another opinion on how to proceed.
I asked her to reach back out to me if she decides to sell.
F/S ad is up in the Marketplace and a thread from the seller in Member to Member.
Know some of you guys were interested, so wanted to give a heads-up to anyone who hasn’t seen the ad. Appears to be some interest. Hope this one stays with an actual RL’er.
