I suspect the dust is slightly metallic and attracted to the steel near the magnets, but I'm not sure; regardless I was getting visible deposits on my
Leading evidence: 'dust is slightly metallic and attracted' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'dust is slightly metallic and attracted' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace pad formula since them' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I may be late to the party but I have seen these Mintex brake pads are now being sold all over including even the forum sponsors. Prices for a rear set for a C4S (same as C2 fronts) is anywhere from $28 to $40. Some even claimed they were discounted from $200+ down to $28!!! Reviews claim they are just as good as Textars. Has anyone here tried these? Whats the real story? If they are crap I cant imagine some of the high rep vendors selling them.
I've tried these and have used them on more than 1 car.
They are a decent "street" pad and exhibits lower brake dust than OEM and doesn't squeal like some of the high performance street pads. They also retain most of the cold initial bite vs other high performance street pads.
With that said, if you use it strictly as a street pad and don't drive your car like a lunatic, you should be fine.
Forget track days with these or even DE's. Multiple high speed stops might have a slight fade over the Textars. At least this was my impression.
At $28 you'd have to wonder if those weren't some Chinese copy ? I went with textar - good savings over oem - and when I pulled my oem pads off - they say textar on the back anyway !
I've used them before. Like Alp said, it's no track pad, but it'll do just fine for street driving.
I paid $50 for the rears and $30 for the fronts from a reputable vendor.
This is normal pricing for them. Unlike a lot of brake pad manufacturers that upped their price since the F&F mania, Mintex is one of the few that didn't rebrand/repackage or spin off their pads and increase their price. They do offer a more performance oriented lineup though.
"cool carbon" is their street/track pads
"extreme" is their track oriented pads
BTW, the regular compounds are also known as "red box" pads.
I used a set and didn't like them; a lot of dark dust, and though quiet at first, squeaked for months at a time as the pads wore and harmonic resonance came & went; seemed like every time it finally stopped on one wheel, the next would start. The grip is great, though; strong enough to lock my tires, even with r-comps during autocross, so no complaints in the budget performance dept. No issues with fade during time trials, either, but I only used them at events with 5-10 minute cool downs between standing-start laps.
I switched to stoptech (centric 309) with this latest pad change and am much happier.
They are better than OEM. Look at the coefficient of friction specs and they are one grade higher than the very expensive Brembos. They are great on the track and on the street they have very little dust and no noise.
Interesting experience. Did you notice most of the heavy dusting under consistent hard braking situations? Also were your pad shims new when using these?
This is different than what I experienced. Mintex regular pads emit a more reddish/brown dust rather than black so your wheels should "appear" cleaner than OEM in most situations.
It's hard to pin dust to any particular single hard braking, but I can't rule it out; what I do know is that the wheels would almost immediately dust up in street driving right after I washed them, and would look awful after just a few days.
After just about every autocross, I'd go to take the magnetic numbers off and still see my numbers there in relief from the light (but visible) layer of brake dust residue deposited on my door during my runs. I suspect the dust is slightly metallic and attracted to the steel near the magnets, but I'm not sure; regardless I was getting visible deposits on my
doors
with less than 4 miles of hard driving, and sufficed to say I was very unhappy with the amount of dust from those Minteks. Performance was fine, they were just messy and noisy. There was a period of almost a year where they'd be quiet when I left the house, but squeaking like mad under light braking by the time I got to work; they'd be silent under heavy braking, but noisy during light. No such issues with other pads before or after. I just dug out the invoice- JAN 2010, P/N 996-352-949-03, Pelican parts. Maybe they've changed the pad formula since them?
I had the red box pads on my 996 for a couple weeks. The squealing drove me nuts. I bought OEM pads and the squealing stopped. I gave the Mintex pads to a fellow board member. I do not believe that just because it is made by Porsche, it must be better. Based on my mods, it is obvious that I think that our cars can be improved upon. I do think that Porsche might have got it right on the brakes.
