If the diff itself is bad you can always just convert it to a RWD and leave the repair for another day.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
48 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

At that price, it's worth buying, paying for the fixes and you're still getting a good deal.
My finger is twitching on the trigger :-) one owner 4s, 2004 cab, silver with chrome and aluminum black interior, 45000 miles... All depends on the PPI tomorrow... great price, and from a Porsche dealer... $24,300... Comments?... Remember gentleman, be gentle be kind and speak life!😉
Sounds like a great deal. As kromdom said, let's see some pics. And, is it a tippy or a manual? Based on the price and that it is an '04 cabriolet, I'm putting my bet on tippy. Not a thing wrong with that, but it seems like there were a lot of 2004 C4S and 996TT cabriolets with tiptronic transmissions.
The "lot" cars - i.e. the ones not customized by a buyer in advance - were mostly silver cabs with tips (so sayeth The Companion), as were the bulk of lease vehicles. Leasing is also, I believe, why you can chuck a gluten-free kale muffin in any direction California and hit an arctic silver Boxster...
OP, we're pulling for you. One-owner 996's are getting to be as rare as truly clever analogies, and that's a low-mileage example for 12 years. If the dealer offers any kind of warranty, are you planning to purchase it? I'm not saying you should or shouldn't - just curious if you are.
Sounds to good to be true....For your sake I hope it pans out. Low miles says you have time before a lot of big maintenance items will start rearing their ugly head. Photos please....
manual all the way, bruh..
They've offered me a month warranty just for peace of mind... I'm not so sure about anything extended, I know there are lots of opinions either way... By nature I kind of like a bit of uncertainty... And any of this is counting my chickens before they're hatched until the PPI is done...yes it's by an indy
That is a very good deal indeed, PPI....it's like waiting for the birth of your first child, without the ****ty diapers.
Hoping it works out for you, pics please and update accordingly
25k for 2004 C4S...I guess I over paid too. Not to mention the 7k in preventative maintenance. Keep an eye out for when I sell it in 2 years cause it will be a well sorted 996. Unfortunately it's not Burgundy either....
Yea the maintenance part caught me a little off guard. This is my first Porsche so I didn't know what to expect
Up to about $3k in bills, and I still need to address my front differential. Both bearings are bad, and need to be replaced. Not sure if the whole diff is bad yet - will address that once the snow melts
If the diff itself is bad you can always just convert it to a RWD and leave the repair for another day. It's a non-destructive and reversible modification.
Unless the sellers are idiots they would have already changed the oil & filter, and washed the engine off really well. Due to this, IMO, any ppi that's worth anything needs to drop the pan.
Did you buy the C4S? Sounds like a great deal and from a Porsche dealership too.
FYI.... I purchased my second 996, 1 owner 03 C4S with 63k miles, last Sept for more then your list price. I did a PPI and knew the pressure plate was failing and needed new front tires too. The person who did my PPI said Its a nice car and if I didn't buy it, he knew someone who would. From my PPI, I knew it would be ~4k+ more to sort. Wasn't in a rush but finally got the work done last week.(clutch, flywheel, and IMS).
So... car passed with flying colors, by an indy that I like a lot and who came highly recommended by you guys. Suspension is tight as a drum, brakes are near new, four new P zeros....
But there are a handful of items that need to be addressed, ie. Motor mounts and coolant lines, trunk shocks, front diff seal, serpentine belt, and the two seals where the cab top meets the body... About $1,200, but the seller has refused to address any of them, says his bottom line is is bottom line.
So... a little disappointed because these seem like issues that should have been sorted considering this is a dealer... Do I hold out, be a hard *** and argue, or do I just grab it and run?... Opinions :-)?... The floor is open gentlemen...
I don't think so. Those aren't really major issues and I wouldn't expect a dealer to address them just to get the car ready.
I think the price is good enough that $1200 after the fact isn't unreasonable at all. Certainly worth asking for, but I wouldn't draw a line in the sand for it.
If it checks all the boxes on your must have list do the deal. If the car was perfect it would have a perfect car price, the dealer may have known some of these issues and priced accordingly. Whenever you buy a used Porsche, always figure you'll be spending an extra $1k the first year. Me I just lie to myself and say it won't cost anything extra, it makes me feel better.
For $25k you should pick this car up. If not, post where you found it and someone here will. Most of the things found are normal wear items. Hood shocks (front and rear are normal wear items IMHO as I have replaced them in all the p-cars I have had.) You are getting almost new brakes and new tires? That's your $1200 right there. Motor mounts are an easy DIY and you can pick between OEM or Torque Solutions for $330 or so. If you want peace of mind, buy the car and get the 90k major service. See if the dealer will work with you on the cost of that. You'll get all fresh baseline for all the fluids, plugs, etc, As a price point, I paid $26k for a 2004 C4S Cab with 86k on the clock last month, From a Porsche dealer, who replaced CV boots, lower ball joint, a door wx seal, wiper blades along with an oil change.
Yeah, those are all minor items. With most 12 year old cars, you could frankly make a list a mile long. Motor mounts, trunk shocks and serpentine belt? If that's the stuff the PPI is finding, then move forward with it without doubt.
For one thing, I damn near guarantee that you would have changed the motor mounts in the next year once you read a couple of threads on that topic. According to many, new motor mounts add 50 hp at the rear wheels, turn the transmission into the equivalent of a PDK, increase gas mileage and increase your stamina in bed. Personally I didn't notice a difference when I changed mine, but my stamina has always been good.
Woot woot! Deal closed, the dealer relented and did the motor mounts coolant lines and hood shocks, going to take the bus in and drive it back tomorrow or Saturday while the roads are still clear after our unseasonably springlike weather.
Thanks so much for all of the feedback gentlemen, it's a big help knowing we're not alone.
Interesting, from Montreal? The Canadian dollar certainly seems to be creating an exploitable market inefficiency for those of us in the US (ie, cars on sale in Canada seem to offer some of the best values/deals right now).
