I mean unless the fluid was just changed I'd throw a tranny/diff fluid service at the noise.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've recently been hearing a rattling/tic-toc sort of noise when in neutral. It goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed. Any similar experiences. The car is a 2002 996 with about 43,000 miles.

POST 2Original post

What comes to my mind: Clutch plate, clutch pressure plate, or the clutch release bearing. How does the clutch pedal feel? In other words, can you feel it through the pedal?

Does the noise return when you release the clutch pedal? It could be normal transmission rattle which in my experience occurs when the drivetrain is up to temperature and when rolling to a stop and with the transmission shifted into neutral. I can make the noise disappear by depressing the clutch pedal then releasing it. But I can bring the noise back by revving the engine and then letting the engine speed return to idle. The noise is less a tick tick than a rattle though. And the noise is irregular. Anything else other than this transmission rattle is almost certainly going to require a correct diagnosis and some semi-serious wrenching. There is not much (if anything) one can do about clutch noise without removing the transmission.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The noise returns when letting up the pedal. Strangely enough, it doesn't occur all the time but seems likely when the motor/trans are fully warmed to normal operating temp.

POST 5Original post

Most likely regular tranny rattle, its normal. May be time for a fluid change?

Then I'm with itusler on this. Most likely tranny rattle. A fluid change could be called for but don't hold your breath it will help. I mean unless the fluid was just changed I'd throw a tranny/diff fluid service at the noise. A fluid change is a good thing to try and worth doing just for the sake of ensuring the transmission fluid is kept reasonably fresh. However, my Turbo tranny manifests this with fresh fluid or fluid ready to be changed. The Boxster transmission very seldom manifests this rattle and when it does it is very faint and indistinct. The 6-speed in the Turbo is a heavy duty transmission with heavy duty parts/construction. The 5-speed in the Boxster is of lighter construction -- though with nearly 300K miles on it durable nonetheless -- so less likely to rattle which I think explains the fact I seldom hear any tranny rattle from the Boxster's transmission. Not likely related but just while you are "there" if the brake fluid hasn't been flushed/bled in a while -- it is due every two years -- have this done and at the same time have the hydraulic clutch system flushed/bled too. I have found with just 2.5 year old fluid this affects the clutch's action and this in turn affects shifting. While you have no complaint about the clutch action or shifting you do not want to let this fluid flush/bleed go.
