FVD Brombacher has made it clear that head work and header porting has proven to be the necessary ingredient in Europe.

They can be had for a little over $100 and I believe is the same part as the one used on GT3's.

For those of you wanting to upgrade the TB and plenum of your 996 but get sticker price shock when looking at the current prices of IPD, I have an option for you.
The option involves this 82mm plenum, marketed for 997.1 but it does fit 996 3.6 perfectly. Is only $299 on ebay

That leaves getting your hand on an 82mm Bosch throttle body and there are few options for this. The first is to get your hands on a TB from a 2008-2011 Cayenne or Panamera from your local junk yard. They can be had for a little over $100 and I believe is the same part as the one used on GT3's. The other option is a Chinese knock-off available on Ebay on this link for just $88.

Seat-of-the-pants dyno tells me there's substantially more torque and I still need to reinstall my K&N CAI but I have a real dyno session coming up to celebrate 100K miles and to see how the car is doing health-wise and will know for sure then when I compare it to one that I did at 82K miles a few years ago. Hope this helps somebody.
LOL, yep around that. 281 whp on 93 octane. Mine is a C4S I also have headers and high-flow cats and aftermarket mufflers. I did it to calm my tinkering heart more than anything and to see if I could get a slight bump. I can think of a 1000 other things to waste $400 bucks on but I rather waste it on my ride. But hey, that's a good an idea for your youtube channel! Sub'd!
Cheers brother,
I was doing research on this as well lately, but I think the 997.1 3.8 engine has the 82mm throttle body( 997-605-116-01). I then went and did a little more research and the crossover tube for the 997.1 3.8 is different than the 3.6. The 3.8 part number is 997-110-416-03. The best part is the crossover tube is around $65.79. I was going to try this, but did not pull the trigger yet. Good information on the throttle body though from the first poster.
Thank you. Yes, I left the crossover tube stock as it has a vaccum activated flapper inside and is already 90mm ID. I just wanted to open the intake a little more but didn't feel like spending $550+ for the IPD plenum and a new Bosch 82mm TB just to see if it made any difference in my 3.6. I've been running this for a week now and I just love this mod. I feel more low end torque but maybe is a placebo effect or something. induction music is also improved I think. I will confirm if I gained anything next week if I can get a dyno slot with this COVID restrictions and all.
FWIW. There is another thread floating around on the GT3 TB and Plenum. Don't know if the Chinese knock-off is a good product or not. It is certainly cheaper. It may be helpful to take a look at this video from Motive on Youtube where the dyno tested the GT3 TB & Plenum using a 997 on the dyno. Well done video. They also do one on exhaust mods.

What I have learned after 19 years of 996 ownership is this. You can get approximately 10-15 HP/TQ out of exhaust mods. TB/PL gives you
great
intake sound but does nothing other than change the powerband pushing the HP/TQ up the curve. Software gives you more throttle response and the ability to alter the powerband as well. You get the "tuner" mega gains from turbos not naturally aspirated engines. If you want to make your naturally aspirated car more powerful, you gotta rebuild it with bigger bores.
However, if you want to make your car faster there are some simple tricks. (1) Upgrade your suspension & brakes, (2) use stickier tires, (3) remove weight from the car, (4) remove weight from the driver, (5) become a better driver.
I have always found that 4 & 5 have been the toughest, but achievable.
So after some reviewing, I have figured the TB won't work with the cable 3.4. Does anyone know if this is true with the plenum shown?
Thanks for the thread!
your issue is the cable tb not the plenum.
I still dont understand the need to spend any money on this mod as it does nothing but just make more noise?
I think for some of us that are less mechanically inclined; this is the type of job that allows us to be hands on with a car we find special.
Plus, people get bored and want something new to tinker with. More intake noises are added bonus?
Suspension done hre done carbon fiber hood done but cars in shop getting UAOS ,tuneup ,water pump, fabspeed xpipe, and SOLUTION
brakes are more then adequate for me
but….Carbon fiber taco tail I’m considering trying to get in touch with a euro company but they haven’t responded
Here is an update on the 997 3.8 Distribution tube (99711041603). The 997 3.8 tube has the same dimensions for the openings in the front where the throttle body mounts and on the sides that mount to the manifold (82mm). This is also the same size as the 996 and 997 3.6 distribution tubes (996.110.116.00). The size difference is in the transition area from the throttle body tube to the intake tubes. The 3.8 tube is bigger and does not neck down as much. So there is a better transition to the side intakes allowing more volume to pass. Here are pictures of the tubes side by side. The 3.8 tube can be had for under $80 from various Porsche supply houses.
3.6 on left. 3.8 on right. The throttle body opening is the same, 82mm.
3.6 on left. 3.8 on right. If you look closely at the area after the throttle body, you can see that it does not neck down as much and maintains the size through the transition.

Another update on
the 997 3.8 Distribution tube (99711041603). I picked up a used 99760511601 throttle body for real cheap. This is the throttle body for the 997 3.8 engine and other Porsches (
Cayenne and Panamera) as well. The throttle body does not fit on the 3.8
Distribution tube. So either the throttle body listed is wrong for the 3.8 S or the distribution tube listed for the 3.8 S is wrong in the parts book. I'd be really curious to check out the part numbers on a real 997 3.8 S.
I don't believe you'll see any performance improvement from an 82mm TB with a stock 3.4 or 3.6.
You might with a 3.8 or 4.0 if tuned properly.
I have the 997 GT3 82mm TB, but my 4.0 is far from stock.
Yeah, seems that head work may provide the necessary incredient for the Plenum/TB enhancements to extract more power. FSI/LN alluded to this in a few threads a year or two ago with the testing and product development developmemt path hat Jake has gone down.
FVD Brombacher has made it clear that head work and header porting has proven to be the necessary ingredient in Europe.
The good news is that the product development and integration race continues to advance for the M96.
You can go to LNs website and sign up for their newsletter. Same on their Facebook account. They keep announcing different parts being released. Every so often they post info on various threads here on RL to tell us about parts.
Let's face it. There are over half a million M96/m97 engines around the world. Everybody and their mother are looking for refresh parts, durability enhancements, performance enhancements, basic rebuilds and utopian rebuilds.
Prime opportunity for entrepreneurs to keep developing. Especially since the 996 is the new darling because it combines affordability with handling. I like what I see.
Great info, thanks! I'm new (obviously) and still learning. Your last sentence is exactly why I just picked one up. It's cheap enough to get into that I may actually do a 4.0 or LS swap in a few years. I'm pretty happy with the powerband above 4K, but would love to pick up some low end torque, or at least acceleration. Light weight Apex wheels have been ordered, and looking into other weight reduction options that don't take away from the GT aspect of the car, since it's not a dedicated track car for me.
The left one is made by Mann+Hummel, that is their internal numbering system......the right one probably is also just need to verify by the casting number....
Congrats on the 996. You will have a blast with it.
Fwiw, the first thing I would do is focus on bullet proofing the engine. Its very easy to do. Suspension and brake enhancements will improve the speed you can carry safely. Exhaust enhancements can not only lighten the car but also improve power output by 10-15 HPTQ.
But the most important thing you can do to get a faster car is to learn how to drive before you go for more power. Join the local PCA region, attend an autocross training with an instructor, then attend a few DEs with instructors. You will find the 996 has plenty of power and is faster than what most drivers can handle on the street and track. It takes years to learn how to balance the car and carry speed. This will give you a few years to figure out your next steps with performance. It will save you a boatload of headaches and money. By that time, we should have quite a few next Gen products out in the market for the 996.
Enjoy!
Appreciate the feedback. Planning to do all of that. It's not my first sports car, but is my first PCar. It had the engine replaced with an OEM engine in 2017, and only has about 36K on it since then. Well documented maintenance. Shifter upgrade parts have been ordered and am shopping coilovers as well.
