The plexi window that I installed today was put in with black calking glue or a rubber compound in addition to a rubber seal.

Think Ive had probably a dozen over the years on different cars.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OZ modified them with an additional or larger (cant remember which) fillet radius that solved the issue once and for all.
Ive been stripping my 99 996 c2 with basic sport options (220 LSD optioned ) no bose system, and 8-way seats for about a month now. I have weighed everything so far so I figured I would post this for the community. I used a very accurate digital scale. 996 weight by item
-2 front door panels =15.2lbs
-2 front door panel speakers +hardware =8.4lbs
-2 rear door panels =6.6lbs
-Rear door panel foam =4lbs
-2 rear door panel speakers =2lbs
-2 Porsche front floor mats =3.5lbs
-2 aluminum Carrera door sills =2.4lbs
-1 passenger side stash tray =1lbs
-center console with leather armrest and all panels +window control frame and spare change bin =4.8lbs
-1 shift **** + anodized 6-spd insert+ cover plate for center console delete + shift boot and frame =1.2lbs
-Stock three spoke steering wheel +airbag =8.4lbs
-2 OEM 8-way adjustable seats =114lbs
-OEM battery +tray and mounting hardware =65lbs
-OEM rear seats =15lbs
-OEM rear seatbelts 4.8lbs
-passenger dash airbag = 6.8
-Driver+pass door airbags+ hardware = 5.8lbs
-Full console delete (cd changer) + hardware and metal framing =10lbs
-Frunk carpet = 1lbs
-spare tire+tools = 28lbs
Rear DME carpet cover + under window carpet and foam =9.5
Rear seat carpet + foam = 17.4lbs
Rear floor carpet + foam = 6.6lbs
Front carpet + foam = 6lbs
[Total interior carpeting delete +foam =30lbs]
-under carpet plastic framing =3.2lbs
-fuse box frame+cover =1lbs
Total= 351.2lbs
I figure Ive gained the equivalent of about 30hp with the weight removal. After I put about 50lbs of fiberglass seats + mounts and a rollbar back in it will probably be a total of about 300lbs lighter. I still have some more to take out.
I can tell you right now the car feels waaaaay lighter as it is. Incredible!
The car has an intake hose +resonator delete, fabspeed headers+x-pipes and mufflers, lightweight pulley and a complete fluid flush, sitting on crappy 25 year old springs and struts, stock wheels and tires.
996 911R project
Future lightweight items:
-HGM wingless decklid with aluminum vintage grill+fan delete =weighs 8lbs
-CF hood with RSR emblem =weighs 9lbs
-lightweight carpeting =weighs 4lbs
-polycarbonate windows and maybe a 911R front power window delete
-Ac delete
-leather door catches
Note that 2950 is for a ROW 1999, the US spec is heavier because of airbags, extra emissions stuff, bumper reinforcements, etc. Probably more like 3050 or 3100 for a US spec 1999.
Did you not see my post? I actually weighed all that stuff with a very accurate scale. The car is noticeably faster and I really dont care about resell value. Its raw and gets down on the street man.
bro, read the post. That was for a 911SC. They didnt make 911SCs in 1999. The study I copied that from was for comparison only from an older aircooled 911SC.
I'm happy your car is faster.
All I'm saying is you have started a thread, saying the same stuff I have seen before. The end result of those threads were people disappointed their car was still so heavy after they went through the effort to weigh all the stuff they removed and thought they had an idea what the car should weigh as a result... Been there myself, although I didn't go through the effort to actually weigh stuff - just the car. And no matter how much stuff I take out of it, I still feel like she's fatter than she should be. She is pretty fast though so I cut her some slack on the occasion twinkie or bon bon she's eating when I'm not looking.
I'm a big fan of weight reduction, wish you all the luck in getting to whatever weight you're targeting.
I have a 996tt in addition to this so I think when I hop in this car and its just all motor, raw, and lightweight its just a different experience than the 3.6 Mezger I have.
Since I cant afford an aircooled 911 this is my raw hotrod. Its loud, scratched up, has no interior but a factory LSD and the IMS done.
I get you, Im not expecting anything crazy here, but I am really surprised at how much I like this car.
and that my friends is what it is all about. Like it your way because that's what counts! I've stripped some weight with seats and rear seat delete but added a roll bar so my butt dyno don't feel any different, but I sure love my car the way it is
Id be interested to see what your car actually weighs with the first round of stripping. In the past, weve had dudes make amazing claims about how light the car was just by weighing components removed and not weighing the whole car.
^ This is key.
Lets have the cars weight
before
the removal of the parts.
Anyway, this is well trodden path. This is a car a good mate of mine built a few years ago :
https://911uk.com/threads/clr-projec...f-250kg.79527/
I mean mine is really stripped. Im just starting to put things back in. I have 18lbs fiberglass seats, 4lbs lightweight carpet, and abs plastic door panels to install.
The door sill sticker says 3700 lbs. I didnt really plan on stripping this car. Im not a rich guy. I just wanted a cheaper 911 I could lower and have a daily driver in addition to my 996tt.
So I didnt weigh it before. Ill see how much it weighs after I put in the rollbar, seats and OZ Allegrerittas on it.
ahh yeah that is the Aussie, yeah hes got that 911CLR. Badass car. Thats a useful thread too! Its got the window weight in there. Its funny if I spend $1100 on polycarbonate windows Ill only save like 2lbs on the sides, and 10lbs on the rear.
Im considering deleting the power windows and rigging something manual for the sides. Like a leather strap pull.
Havent figured it out yet though. I dont want to replace the steel doors, that would be really unsafe for the street. Like riding a bike at that point.
I wonder if the Cantrell cage is the same weight.
I have those same OZs to put on mine whenever I do the coilovers.
What coilovers are you running? I have Feals (handmade in the US.)
Are the OZs much lighter than the OEM wheels? The ones on mine right now are already real light so I dont know how much Im going to save if anything.
Depends on what OE wheels you’re running. The OZ’s are lighter than all of them, but the hollow spoke Turbo 1’s and the 996.2 Carrera 5 spokes run them fairly close.

My car has the M030 but Im getting ready to swap in a set of Ohlins R&T and refresh the entire suspension. I had GT3 wheels on the car theyre heavy in comparison to the OZs.
I researched and found a good lightweight carpet off the roll on Amazon. To stick it down I have a certain type of carpet tape.
four rolls (which you dont need all of that) + the entire roll of carpet is like 4.8lbs.
The carpet is jet black, and not too thin.
I dont how much experience everyone has with driving raced out cars on the street but, I grew up driving these types of cars and in general, ANY lightweight racecar type wheel requires careful consideration for the street.
The OZ wheels are probably the lightest wheels Ive ever held without getting into magnesium.
If you live in the Northeast Im sorry, roads there are just unusually crappy.
Thanks for posting this, all of that together is about 11-12lbs per door. Ok all the fab work to completely remove them for a streetcar I don't think is worth it.
To be fair, until Apex came around there were no cheaper forged lightweight wheels available. I agree that OZs are a reasonably priced racing option. Theyre the Enkei RPF1 of the P-car world, def not garbage.
The early Alleggeritas got a bad rep due to the spokes cracking. OZ modified them with an additional or larger (cant remember which) fillet radius that solved the issue once and for all.
As a Chunk said, prior to Apex arriving on the scene there were few if any bespoke 996 N/B and W/B fitments that were light, provided good caliper clearance and suited the car from a styling perspective. Youre only real choice were high maintenance and expensive BBS E88s or heavier but lower maintenance and just as expensive BBs LMs.
Volk had been making TE37's for forever, and back before they gained a premium reputation they were reasonably affordable (actually less than what Apex forged wheels cost today).
Empirically: when you get up there in tire grip, roughly around the Super200tw level, more wheel stiffness starts becoming worth the tradeoff of an extra pound. Maintains camber better throughout the lap, and enables you to take different lines over critical curbs. I had a living room full of bent and shattered RPF1's and learned that it was both faster (laps), cheaper, and gave me more seat time in the end after migrating to forged wheels.
Im familiar and own a set of TEs, theyll be on my car when I get home in 4 weeks. They were about 750-$1k per when they were available for our car. Think Ive had probably a dozen over the years on different cars.
The OZs were around 2300.00 for the set and weigh about the same as the TEs but obviously not as durable which I will agree is subjective.
hahaha I'm dumb. I thought he weighed the door, door panel and glass, etc...and it only equaled 23.5 lbs. Don't drive and surf rennlist lest you wanna be mistaken.
When I weighed two door panels+two door speakers+ two door airbags and hardware I got 29.4lbs. That is using a calibrated digital scale. So add the window weight for each door and that is the complete weight.
Forget the spokes, the barrels are wet noodles, totally subpar wheels and customer service is a big F.U. even when new...anything is better than that junk
In my quest for dropping weight I recieved a GT Racing polycarbonate rear window for my 99 996 and a CCP fiberglass hood.
-OEM hood hasnt been weighed yet but its steel and heavy so Im thinking its gonna be 28-35lbs. Ill update this later when I weigh it.
-CCP fiberglass hood weighs exactly 11lbs and is great quality!
-OEM rear glass weighed exactly 16lbs
-GTR polycarbonate rear window weighs exactly 6lbs.
ok, good to know. Thank you for the context.
On a different note. I just installed a rear plexi 3mm window on this car. I used good adhesive and a new seal. Do you think I need to bother with window braces? Those aluminum vertical braces you see on older cars.
They r not fagile. They were designed as a light weight track wheel and they do that very well. If u live in an area with decent roads they r fine on the street, in the northeast....not so much.
Those old 911 windows weren't glued in. They were just placed on the outside against the pinch welds with a rubber seal. That's why they needed braces.
The old plexi windows or glass windows? The plexi window that I installed today was put in with black calking glue or a rubber compound in addition to a rubber seal.
