I checked all tire pressures before the drive and previously replaced the brake switch with a genuine Porsche part.
Leading evidence: 'Check tire pressures' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust brake light switch' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Just removed and cleaned the MAF (there is a very mirrored plate that looked dirty in the sensor).

Mine popped on randomly and I just happened to have a scanner in the car last time it happened, and managed to pull the following codes while the error message was still on; cleaned the maf sensor and they havent come back since not saying thats what fixed it.but its promising so far.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Suggestion
Ive only used it to check the codes and the data from the engine DME, but it gives an option to read the other modules on the 996, such as Airbag, ABS, and Tiptronic (if equipped).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
28 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.
Rennlist: 1 discussions
0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.
1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

UGH!
I thought I had this solved. It had gotten to the point I couldn't drive 1/2 mile before I got the ABS/PSM failure warnings. Replaced the brake switch with a genuine Porsche part and drove the car about 5 miles without a problem! Then, braking hard into a corner the warning came back. Groan... but, I found the right front tire pressure low. Corrected that and life has been good since...until yesterday, that is!
Ran some errands; shut down the car twice before returning home. Thing is, I did NOT pull into my garage and shut down, but left the car idling in the driveway with the car in neutral and the parking brake on. Putzed around in the garage sweeping out leaves and dust, cleaning up some oil, etc. Maybe 5 minutes.
Went back to the car to pull into the garage and the DAMN ABS/PSM warning was displayed!!
WTF is going on???

Unfortunately, I do not.
Just removed and cleaned the MAF (there is a very mirrored plate that looked dirty in the sensor). Contacts and glass diode looked clean and well crimped.
When I got the error, it was a wheel speed sensor. It is an easy fix but you need to know which one because there is one in each wheel. It can be anything...You need to scan it with a proper obd2 reader ..
Thing is, the code showed when the car was SITTING STILL...it was fine while I was driving! That's the part that is weird; hard to see how it could be a wheel speed sensor.
But, I guess it could be the MAF
Please get the car scanned and report back with the trouble codes. Speculating with minimal info at this point in time is unlikely to resolve the problem.
Well, it seems like that could be a waste of money given what I've researched so far on this ABS/PSM issue. As an earlier poster stated, pretty much a Whack-a-Mole situation. Take a look at
@e30rapidic
's post: he had FOUR different codes! Only one pointed to the MAF! Which he cleaned and it hasn't come back. So, I've cleaned my MAF and I'm going to drive it a bit and see if it comes back.
Agree that it's pretty much speculation at this point. It just doesn't seem like the codes do a very good job of pointing to the actual cause of this particular problem.
I'd hoped my odd situation of having the ABS/PSM code coming up while the car was just idling in neutral might have been unique enough that someone had seen that before, or at least could narrow down the possible causes.
I'll update with progress/solution. Maybe a few days as the car is down while I fix the driver's side fan..waiting on the part.
MAF issues cause the PSM error because the PSM calculates engine torque from the MAF. If the engine torque does not match what the PSM calculates it throws that code.
ARRRGGGH!
Got the fans all working and everything put back together and went for a drive. I think cleaning the MAF really helped as the car responds much quicker and pulls strong...
BUT the damn ABS/PSM warning came back after about 5 miles. Again, it came on under hard braking into a corner (I'm not talking on the edge of lockup, just 'spirited' braking). Last time it was a right turn, this time a left. I checked all tire pressures before the drive and previously replaced the brake switch with a genuine Porsche part.
I'm about to spring for a Durametric, or whatever the best diagnostic software is? It just seems like this issue triggers multiple codes, some seemingly without relevance to the problem...so not much help in narrowing down the root cause.
I pulled the plunger all the way out before installing the switch. Not sure how to check the lights come on when the pads 'touch the rotors'' seems pretty subjective. How should I do that?
Grab an assistant, or a mirror to reflect the brake lights back at you. Or you could wait until its dark and the glow of the lights will be apparent.
Start your car, and press your brake pedal. Theres a bit of play that occurs before you feel some contact. If you cant feel it at first, try driving around and feel for the initial contact when you brake.
Ideally you want the brake lights to activate when you feel they make contact, or just a bit before.
There was someone in the 997 forum whose PSM warning light would trigger because they didnt adjust their brake light switch appropriately.
The following link has instructions for adjusting the brake light switch.

Thanks!
Just went and checked. Looks to be set pretty well; slight pressure and no lights, a little more and feel firmness and the break lights come on.
Darn unfortunately it doesnt sound like the brake light switch then, unless its acting up only under heavy brake pressure.
I still stand by my recommendation of having the codes read with a proper scanner. Theres no better step to take to efficiently solving your problem.
I don't think AUTOZONE's scanner is able to read these codes any better than the scanner I have (which shows 'no codes' even when the ABS/PSM warning is active).
The local indie shop sticks you with $150 just to plug in their scanner.
I've had the car for 8 years...maybe it's time to cough up the money for my own Durametric, if that's still the best option.
Autozones scanner is probably limited to OBD2 Check Engine lights.
I purchased a Foxwell NT710. Ive only used it to check the codes and the data from the engine DME, but it gives an option to read the other modules on the 996, such as Airbag, ABS, and Tiptronic (if equipped).
Ive read recommendations on Rennlist for the Foxwell NT530, but chose the NT710 because I assumed it could work with other cars. It does work with other brands, but youll need to pay between $60 to $80 for each additional brand (Mercedes is $60, BMW is $80, etc.). Theres a bit of false advertising in that..
In the end, I think the NT530 has the same pay-scheme so you can save a bit by choosing that scanner instead. For what its worth, the NT710 is a good scanner. Its fast and does its job well.
Thanks!
Reading a few posts about the Durametric and I'm not liking it...
Do the Foxwell products require an annual subscription? Or, is it one and done when you buy?
Just watched a promo video and it looks like it has built in WiFi with free software updates. For $260 it seems worth it when compared to paying the indie $150 each time!
Thanks for the discussion!
Youre welcome, but Im sure your indie isnt only charging you to plug in a computer. Theyre probably dissecting the car, looking for the root cause. With that being said, sometimes the root cause is simple and having your own diagnostic tool can be helpful to avoid paying someone to tell you to tighten your gas cap, or something.
