Rebuild wound up costing a bit more than initially estimated because second gear needed to be replaced along with some other parts, but the work is done and the car is drivable again.

No gear sets were replaced and even then it was knocking on $7K plus engine out and back in charges.

I have run across the comment before that only the pressure plate is different.

The problem my mechanic ran into was that the transmission shops he has used and trusts didn't have anything on hand.

Suggestion
Note my $7k invoice includes replacing the open diff with a wavetrac, that's almost $1500, I thought it to be worthwhile since the transmission was already out but could be omitted for a street only rebuild.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

New here. Found and purchased a 1999 C2, good service records, everything
seemed
to check out, drove it home. At some point noticed a metallic whirring sound that got worse. I suspected a wheel bearing. Had our home mechanic look at it, and apparently the transmission is full of metal shavings and needs a rebuild. (I have my theories about the seller, but
caveat emptor
).
Mechanic said finding a transmission was difficult, and could only find one through a dealer for a vomit-inducing $12k+. This seem preposterously high to me. Anybody have recent experience as to whether this is reasonable or not? Have used this indy shop for years, but a second opinion will be obtained before I commit to that kind of spend.
Also know that you can use a G96.01 transmission from a MkII car. Only the pressure plate is different.
I do have a G96.00 that I may be willing to sell. Don't know where you are located.
Have you checked eBay? Considering you basically do not hear about transmission issues on this site, I would have no issues getting a used one.

I'm in Kentucky, but shipping is possible, I assume. Both shops I've spoken to here are recommending going straight to Porsche, which just doesn't seem to me like the right-sized solution for a 23-yo, 100k-mile Sunday car.
I rebuilt my manual in 2020 with California motorsports, $7k total to them (labor for the local shop to remove/replace not included). This included adding a wavetrac differential ($1295) and shipping both ways ($550), I also had pretty much anything they recommended replaced, so ymmv with what actually needs to be swapped.

Do you recall what the cost was to have your local shop remove/replace? There's another shop here that says they can rebuild it, as well. Just wondering how to decide whether to let them do it and save the shipping or let one of the recommended specialists do it.
Thank you to all for your help so far! This was obviously an unexpectedly large hit right out of the 996-ownership gate!
Sure, here's the invoice line items. Again, this was November 2020, supply chains have gone to hell since then, so I can't comment as to the current pricing.
That is a good but light rebuild. They replaced all the syncros, one slider, couple bearings, and seals. Also only 10 hours of labor which is good for you. No gear sets were replaced and even then it was knocking on $7K plus engine out and back in charges. For the original poster, if the noise is the only thing wrong, this estimate is probably what it's going to be.
CMS quoted me about double the highest quote I got from anyone else. Not passing judgement, just a statement from when I was investigating.
I had requested a quote for the repair of a 3rd and 4th gear grind.
Be careful to compare apples to apples. The CMS estimate is likely higher because it covers more work and parts replacement than other bids. I get a lot of rework sent my way after "the other guy" did only a part of what was really needed. The 996 transmissions are difficult to service, to some measure because of the interference fit of the gears to the pinion shaft. So it is not uncommon to see work done that avoids replacing the POS front pinion bearing, the one sitting under that gear stack.
Will plan on getting Gbox ready to ship
rebuild in future. Install transmission myself as
it doesnt seem that hard but I am sure Ill be cussing a storm once Im in there.
CMS rebuilt my G50 gearbox. It was not cheap; in fact it was almost as expensive as the purchase price of the car; parts are fantastically expensive for that gearbox. Their work appears to be topnotch so far. CMS even replated all the hardware and brackets with fresh zinc chromate.
Unless you know the mechanic well, I would question the advice from this mechanic. How could he have difficulty finding one used??? They aren't difficult at all to find. Did you see the shavings? Are you sure the noise is coming from the transmission? If it is shifting well otherwise, I would definitely try a transmission oil change first. Only 3 quarts required and it is a trivially easy job. I don't think transmission failures are that common on the 996.
Adding on to my prior post, the whine issue seems to be fairly easy to fix with just bearings according to this thread =>
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...read-this.html
I would definitely find another mechanic if the transmission is otherwise okay.
CMS says this on their website..
"
The most commonly reported problems are excessive noise and or 2nd gear grinding or popping out. Noise is almost always related to a worn out pinion bearing, the double row ball bearing with dust shield. The misconception is that the bearing is sealed and does not receive proper lubrication. That is simply not the case. The differential spyder gears prematurely wear on model years '99-'01. As those gears wear and as the diff turns it loads the bearing with debris. The dust shield does not help; therefore we remove as part of the rebuilding process. All wheel drive and cars with Limited Slip Differential (option M220) are not affected by this. However contaminated oil can lead to the same problem."
It looks like a new transmission from Porsche is about $8k if you get it from the right dealer (

)
If it's $7k all in for a rebuild, seems to me it makes more sense to just buy a new one ready to drop in vs going through the hassle of shipping, unless I am missing something.
Note my $7k invoice includes replacing the open diff with a wavetrac, that's almost $1500, I thought it to be worthwhile since the transmission was already out but could be omitted for a street only rebuild.
Sorry for the delayed response. I'm looking at about $4,500 between GBox rebuild, shipping, and paying my local shop to do the heavy lifting under the car. This car is primarily my wife's Sunday car, so we're fine with a light rebuild. It's not going to see a track with us at the wheel.
The problem my mechanic ran into was that the transmission shops he has used and trusts didn't have anything on hand. He makes no claims to being a transmission specialist, and I appreciate that honesty. He understandably didn't want to put just any used transmission in there.

@WinfieldScott
... appreciate you starting the thread. I have same issues as you, considering same options (Gbox, CMS).. I intend for same use (no track). Good luck regardless!
Rebuild wound up costing a bit more than initially estimated because second gear needed to be replaced along with some other parts, but the work is done and the car is drivable again. No complaints. Breakdown below does not include labor for my local guy to drop, drain, pack, and reinstall, which came in right around $1,500 (plus the cost of a large Igloo cooler to ship it in).

FWIW, Thought this may be of interest from FCP on the 996 transmissions for those that want to gain a better understanding. I for one haven't paid much attention to them. But they are all getting older and probably should study up.

I had a bad pinion bearing in my C4. Metal shavings had pitted all the gears and the whole thing was toast. About the only thing salvageable was the case. I found a good low mileage transmission on EBAY from a 30K mile C4 for $2500. The swap was pretty straightforward and only took a day and its been good for about 12K miles so far.
One of my sources has a really low mileage G96.01 for $2500 that I've been thinking about picking up as a spare.
I've also been thinking about a ring & pinion change that would be nice to have a second transmission for.
But storage is an issue at the moment.(or always)
I just got a rebuilt 996C4 gearbox, clutch pack, and new dual mass flywheel from Joe Cogsbill at CogCogs all-in for less than $7500 and $750 core charge. Did the removal of the old and installation of the new one myself.
Joe Cogsbill has been racing Porsche and rebuilding gearboxes for over 30 years. Great source for 996 parts from dismantled 996's too.
I realize this is an old thread but hoping you might be able to answer a question for me. I have a failing trans in my 2000 C2 and I'm looking at a relatively low milage G96.01 (G96.00 is original). I have run across the comment before that only the pressure plate is different. My question is, does the pressure plate need to be changed to accommodate the G96.01 or can the original plate be used?
