Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys, Spoiler issue on my 1999, 996 C4. had a mild panic attack getting off the freeway when I heard this loud tick-tick-tick-tick which I imagined was the engine about to explode. Then it stopped. Happened a few more times and I realized that it was the spoiler motor making the noise. Strange thing is the spoiler motor is trying to close the spoiler even after it has closed. That is the ticking. I tried to manually (using switch) open and close the spoiler. It only opens partially (maybe an inch or so) then the motor stops as if the spoiler is all the way up. When I use the switch to close the spoiler, it closes and then tick ticks and tries to close it even more. my guess is there is a sensor on there somewhere so the car knows if the spoiler is up or down? Any guidance as to where? Or am I missing something. I am aware of the speeds it deploys and retracts etc.does the ecu control this? to add some context, when I got the car the spoiler didnt go up or down. In investigating I found that the teeth for both sides to deploy were totally shredded. The teeth on the motor cog were totally fine, it was just the 2 rectangular grooved units that were shredded. I replaced the unit and all moving parts with a very nice unit with perfect teeth. The unit worked great for a few months. Im also now wondering if the car is trying to close the spoiler when its already closed.is that what shredded the last set of teeth??? any guidance appreciated!!

Sounds like a valid theoryie. The spoiler/lid or the drive gear(s) is in the wrong position when starting. No idea how to re-calibrate, but it seems like thats what it needs. Good luck
