I'm considering whether I have the original trans rebuilt or go with a relatively low mile used unit.

My question is, is it necessary to replace the pressure plate when installing the G96.01 in a 996.1 car?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Long story short, my new to me 2000 996 has a failing G96.00 transmission. Consulting with a local Euro car mechanic and reading some of the threads here on the issue it appears that the mainshaft bearing is bad. Not that bad, it's still drivable but the noise is undeniable. I'm considering whether I have the original trans rebuilt or go with a relatively low mile used unit. I have found a G96.01 that looks to be in good shape for about the same price as a rebuild of my G96.00. I have read that the G96.01 will bolt up even though it is a couple of inches longer as the mounting points are the same. The only significant difference being that the pressure plate was upgraded for the larger engine in the 996.2. My question is, is it necessary to replace the pressure plate when installing the G96.01 in a 996.1 car? My intuition says no as the 996.1 still has the smaller motor but, that is a mistake I would not want to make if it is necessary.
