Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking at buying a 2004 Convertible from a indy Porsche dealer/repair shop here in Houston. Car only has 62xxx miles on it. The IMS hasn't been done but according to the Indy, he said the issue is way over blown by the internet and that he's only seen 2 in the last 30 years of being in business. The car has a clean carfax with sport seats, etc. Super clean car and very good example of a 996. Just wondering the groups thoughts? I can buy it for $30k out the door (Houston tax rate of 6.5% plus title and license are another serval hundred dollars) so I figure closer to $27,500. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Sounds OK with a clean bill of health. Compression test, borescope, cam deviation reading, service records up to date. I would not agree with his IMS statement so I would plan on servicing the car as soon as possible with new fluids, clutch, RMS, IMS, water pump, AOS and any other needed mechanical work. Cars owned by mechanics almost always have deferred service work because they are too busy working on other people's cars and they sort of know what limits they can stretch the service interval.

POST 3Original post

As someone that has had the IMS fail on a previous car, Id disagree with his statement. Id plan to replace the IMS. Prior to purchasing, get a DME report to check for over revs and borescope from the sump, not the spark plugs. Id want to be sure it passed the pre qualification process for the IMS retrofit too. https://imsretrofit.com/pre-qualification-procedure/

POST 4Original post

The opinion of someone trying to sell you a used car should not be part of your decision making. It's a 20 year old car. Porsche still makes parts for it, and many of those parts will need to be replaced. The price may still be OK, but be sure you have access to $5K for repairs in the first 12 months.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 19196501

This is spot on. $5k is about right for you to baseline the vehicle.

POST 6Original post

Cabs are the red-headed stepchild 911. (I can't say I fully understand why.) Cab tips are available for under $20K. You don't say what drivetrain, gearbox, color, interior, or options, and those can affect price by many $thousand$. If you want a proper opinion, you need to provide more information. As others have said, assume it will need additional $ spent unless you have hard evidence of maintenance and replacement of, say, 20 year old rubber bits. The real question then becomes, is it a car worth spending those extra $ on.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19196660

All good points. C2 in silver over blue leather interior with sport seats, PDK. I agree with your thought on cabs being the red headed step child, I don't understand as I actually really like them.....The $5k though is probably right on as well and not sure I want $30+ stuck in a car thats only going to lose value (not that it was going to be an investment) but a love of labor. Thanks for all the input guys!

POST 9Original post

A well maintained 996 won't loose value. There are few surprises in maintaining a 996. Forests of trees have been cut down to document all the maintenance items that need to be added to the list provided by the manufacturer. But unlike other 20+ year old cars, you can still get parts, so it is completely maintainable.

POST 10Original post

2004 has Tiptronics, not PDK and that is a very big difference. $25K if everything checks out...

POST 11Original post

I bought my 2004 6-speed cab in 2017 with the original IMSB. Now at 68,000 miles and about $10K in repairs and maintenance it has given over 20K miles of smiles. I'll get the IMSB refitted when I replace the clutch. /X3
