Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'missing piece' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'missing piece' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend obx torque bias lsd' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I can also recommend the OBX torque bias LSD but you must buy a bolt and shim upgrade kit for it.

Suggestion
I just picked up a wavetrac for my c2 and now I am trying to find a good set of instructions to set the back lash properly.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Did some searching on this forums and felt I couldn't find a definitive answer.
Can you install an aftermarket LSD into a G96.00(early 996 manual) that came from the factory with an open diff?
If yes, what manufactures make a LSD for this application?
Known Options(as of 2/2/23):
Wavetrac
Quaife ATB
KAAZ LSD(supposed to launch in summer 2023)
Guards Diff GT3 club or GT2 pro
Calling Guard would be your best bet for definitive.
I have an OSG unit which is not marketed for a 996 but can be made to work (at least in my 03 box) with some other changes. In my case the stub axles needed to be machined.
OSG was not super helpful when it came to if it would work but Roger at CMS was a good resource during the investigative phase, so you may want to add him to your list to call.
I do on my 2002. It was the missing piece on the track. You can do suspension and brakes, but without a LSD you lack balance, stability and grip. Didn't know what I was missing until I figured out I didn't have an lsd. Same can be said for street driving. Especially in bad conditions.
Yeah, it's been 12-15 years since my indie put it on the car and at the time, I paid less attention to the details and more on the concept. I would give Guard a call and see what they have and what is needed. My indie suggested a 40/60 if I remember correctly so I could move the car around on a parking lot since it was doing double duty on the street and track. Good luck with it!
Thank you
Called and emailed just waiting for a reply. I have a 40/60 guard in my 997 and really enjoy it.
This car will be mostly street car. Might do a track/autocross day here or there. But I have my 997 which I do about 10-12 track days a year in.
Um, no. Not all differentials use the circlip design. Just shipped a G96.01 with a OS Giken (not my favorite, let's leave it at that) that took the M10 center bolts. It will depend on what is available from the differential maker.
Since he has experience with an lsd on his 997 track car he will notice the difference on the 996 if he is putting it thru its paces on local roads. Once you know the feel of inside wheel spin and the instability from a non-lsd you never forget it and never want it again.
But i agree with you, most folks won't know the difference because they never pushed a car with and without lsd hard enough to experience it.
I looked into a Guards for an 03 an some axle modification was required, that the required maintenance, and limited track time made a Wavetrac the more logical answer. The improvement is noticeable on the street obviously the more spirited the driving the greater the improvement. Also no more tendency to drift off the lights. and more planted feeling in the rain.
FWIW, I just went thru some old records. Here is a picture of my LSD when my indy took it out and rebuilt it in April of 2022. When it was originally done back in 2010, I don't remember if they shipped my diff to Guard or just got the internals from Guard and built it at my indy. Think it was shipped to Guard. Either way, someone will recognize what the body is. Don't remember if its a 996 or a 993. Internals are Guard. Point is that there were a number of options 13 years ago and probably more today. Hope it helps.
As a side note, the face plate was circled In red because we were looking for one last year with the rebuild.
Yes, I opted for a wavetrac when I refreshed my transmission, the thought process was that the car was mostly a daily + some autocross/hpde so I wanted to put in a unit which would not require a rebuild in the future as I'm hoping to never go into the transmission again. Other than maybe in weather you don't notice on the street, there was a roundabout near me with some deteriorated pavement 20 feet out from one of the exits, if I gave it the beans coming out I'd hit it around 5k RPM in second gear where the ridge would bump one of the rear tires up and you could feel the acceleration hang, with the wavetrac it just accelerates through.
Backlash for a G96.00 is printed on the ring gear as its F number, and is usually (maybe always) 0.15 mm. (Where for other transmissions the F number is written with an electric pencil after factory set-up, for the G96 it is stamped on.) The Porsche training materials do not provide a range, nor do they mandate "not to exceed" for these transmissions. If you can get it +/- 0.02, you should be fine. The backlash is to be measured 84 mm from the axis (68 mm plus 16 mm for half the VW521/4 tool width.) Good luck,
Great option for many people, especially if you are not chasing a checker flag. You can read about their TBD on their web site. Guard remains the solution for serious competition.
Kevin, can't give you a detailed answer other than i asked my indy to go thru everything when they dropped the engine for a parts refresh in prep for getting back out on the track. But I will when I stop in at my indy in a month. Let me know if there is anything else you want to know. Always good to share info.
I can also recommend the OBX torque bias LSD but you must buy a bolt and shim upgrade kit for it. Its the cheapest option and works well if done right.
