Now that it has been getting colder, I find that when I have not driven my car for several hours and it gets cold, the gear change on my '99 C2 996 Cab becomes very notchy for about 5 miles then all is well - almost seems as though once the car warms up all is well and car drives as always with gear changes being as slick as always.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, Now that it has been getting colder, I find that when I have not driven my car for several hours and it gets cold, the gear change on my '99 C2 996 Cab becomes very notchy for about 5 miles then all is well - almost seems as though once the car warms up all is well and car drives as always with gear changes being as slick as always. Car has 42k miles. Can I assume my clutch is nearing its end of useage point? Also, before I started getting the gearbox notchy problem, I found the car was leaking oil before its 36k miles service. The local Porsche dealership did make notes on the invoice about the leak after servicing the car however they did not fix or investigate the leak. I then provisionally booked the car in for the leak to be investigated and resolved however over a period of 2 months, the leak has ceased! The area of the leak was noted as from the gearbox housing. What should I make of that? Cause to worry or would have anything done during the service subsequently resolved the leak? Is it still worth sending the car in for the leak to be found & fixed or would I be paying for a problem that might not have been a problem in the first place? Engine oil level is OK, infact all oil levels are OK. Any ideas?

POST 2Original post

In my experience, it is quite normal for the gearchange to be much more notchy in cold temperatures until the fluids warm-up. With my car, it takes a good 3 to 5 miles of driving in sub 50 degree weather to get the gearchange to shift smoothly. Just make sure you depress the clutch pedal to the floor and you don't force the shifter into its each respective gate.

POST 3Original post

I've had the same experience shifting on both a '99 C2 cab and an '02 if the cars have been out at night and the temperature drops into the 30's. I find, however, that the gear box warms up in just a minute or two.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Guys, wow, I was almost talked into fitting a new clutch by my local dealership! - they would never get another sale from me. Well, this board is certainly proving its worth. Good show memebers. Tx yet again. '99 C2 Cab
