I had just gotten done driving my 996 rather hard on the way to the store and when I was going to park I noticed a knocking noise, my first thought was the water pump as the noise dosent speed up or get louder with higher rpms it actually gets quieter, also it stopped after I had the car off for about 30 minutes then started again after about 30 seconds of running time, and a check engine light appeared on the 10 minute drive home.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Id love any input!

POST 2Original post

Never heard a water pump sound like that! Pull the CE code and post here.

POST 3Original post

That is not a good noise. Pull the engine code and that will be a bigger clue.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Pulled the CEL code and this is what I got, side note my water pump is due to be replaced I just hit 80 k miles and Im running the original water pump. Also I think I may have a blown cat, due to the code, also all my exhaust seems to be stock when looked at from underneath but my car is much louder than stock.

POST 5Original post

I am guessing the rattle you are hearing, then, is your catalytic converter has come apart inside. Knock on wood. This code has nothing to do with your water pump.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 18620356

But... at 80K miles on the original water pump, you are 20,000 miles past the sell-by date.

POST 7Original post

True - this isn't a reason to not do the water pump. Just commenting that a rattle and that code do have business being together. Especially if the rattle and engine speed do not seem to correlate.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was thinking the same thing! And dont worry i already overnight shipped a new thermostat and water pump! Thanks for the feedback! Also, @Dr_Strangelove is that a 996.2 gt3 spoiler? If thats aftermarket i was wondering where to buy one, thanks!
