I did some research and concluded it was the conductor plate - a very common issue with MBZ transmissions and also a relatively easy and cheap DIY fix.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My mechanic managed to get the part from Mercedes dealer for $14 and it fixed my leak.
I've got AAA coming to tow her back to the dealer.
Any ideas? 2002 996 Tip C2 Cab. Had entire engine replaced after IMSB failure around 22k on the odometer before I purchased it. I pulled up to the intersection and when the light went green the car lurched foward and that was it. I tried putting it in park and back in drive and nothing. Car starts fine, just a no go with the teams. Some nice officers helped push me into a gas station so here I await for AAA.
It's gotta be something with transmission right?
Yes, sounds like something blew up in the transmission. Good luck with the diagnosis.
I'd much rather have a 996 with a healthy engine and a busted transmission than the opposite...
I wonder if you broke a halfshaft or something. Does it rev but just not go anywhere? Does it make any new noises?
No new noises. It revs and I can feel the car trying to move. I had just gotten off the highway doing freeway speeds (65+)
I hope it's just a half shaft.
Sorry to hear. Usually when a half shaft breaks you'll hear some clunking or ZzzzzZZZZzzzz-ing as the splines grind themselves to dust. It could be, but more likely it's in the valve body, if you don't have any grindy noises.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, that there'd likely be some flopping or at least the sound of a shaft running twice as fast as normal. Hopefully an inexpensive fix...
I didn't take notice of any fluids at the intersection since I was in heavy traffic, but as the car sat at the gas station underneath the car was bone dry.
With these car's transmissions, does the fix normally entail an entire new trans or is there some hope for a non-$5000 plus fix?
Could just be low/almost out of trans fluid. Also bad torque converter or bad torque converter clutch solenoid.
It needs to be checked for codes and fluid.
I hope it's something simple like that. Definitely annoying they are charging me a diagnosis fee for a car that still has 30 day tags. I guess that's what come with buying AS IS.
~22k tip tranny failures are fairly rare on the mk2 models. Wonder if PO might've abused it with neutral drops and brake torquing...
It will be interesting to see what the diagnosis says.
is your car being towed to the same dealer you bought it from? hope they do not give you any grief about the intake mod you just did.....which most likely has NOTHING to do with your current problem.
Well the engine was replaced at 22k. The car now has 50k on it when I purchased it a few weeks ago. I've certainly never neutral dropped it but I do drive the car hard as I understand these cars are meant to be. I have no idea about the previous owner.
Heh. Best Steve Irwin voice: "Crikey, here we have a beautiful specimen of the Carrera 2 in its native habitat. Notice how it rides on the back of its much larger cousin. Wow, what a beaut! You have to spot one in the wild to appreciate it...they seldom survive long in captivity."
Doesn't sound like a blown transmission, nor a failed half-shaft.
Reads more like something electrical with the transmission. Could be something like a bad solenoid.
Keepin' our fingers crossed. That would be excellent if it's just a solenoid.
Tip trannies are extremely robust... I have heard of very few failures. So, here's hoping it's something minor!
Well, the car went in on Friday and they told they'd have a report by Monday. Called them Mon and that turned into Tuesday. Same story on Tuesday. So hopefully third times the charm. I'm expecting some answers by this afternoon.
The dealership just told me that the torque converter went bad and took the transmission with it.
They said they will send an appeal or whatever to Porsche to see if they will pay for it but it would cost around 25000 dollars to fix my 26000 dollar Porsche. I can't even function I'm so mad.
They are checking on used parts as well. Anybody got a torque converter and tip transmission they are looking to sell?
Also check LA Dismantler...lots of places that specialize in used Porsche parts. Don't let the dealer sucker you for $25000...that's PDK prices, not tiptronics.
Theres no way in hell I'd pay 25k to fix that car. The dealer is looking for used parts as well to come up with an estimate. I'm going to start looking for private shops that work on Porsches and look around for the parts myself.
Man, it's so nice, all I want to do cruise around in my cab
Although the Internet says that nobody rebuilds/repairs transmissions any more, you may be able to find someone to do the work. When I blew up the transmission on my Volvo 850, I got the same "buy a new one or find a used one - nobody works on transmissions any more" stuff - and then I found a guy who stripped it down, replaced two or three parts, and put it back together for something like $400.
I know we're talking apples, not Volvos - but it still might be worth seeing if you have a local transmission whisperer.
When my motor 'sploded, the guys right here on RL helped in my search for a good used one. DTMiller found it for me. So, a great resource here.
Good advice, Schnelly... yes, maybe someone can do a rebuild.
Yikes! $25K? Crazy.
Check around for a used one. Maybe here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/03-Carrera-4...-/301804598715
It's from a C4, but I know a C4 can be converted to a C2.
That's really good news because I saw a lot more used C4 trans than the C2. Thanks everybody for all the help. They should be calling tomorrow about the used parts thy were looking at.
Where are you located? I have a great transmission guru but he is located in NJ. Perhaps it may make sense to give him a call. Who knows, maybe pull it and ship it to him for a rebuild. Just a thought. If you want the number, pm me
Oh that's not good. Had my fingers crossed it was something less serious.
Not sure I read that right? $25K for a new Tip? My 2003 Turbo's 6-speed had I had to buy it when it was replaced under warranty was just $11K not including labor to drop the old one and install the new one.
The Porsche techs I talk to tell me the Tip is repairable. It is made by ZF and a number of other makes/models use nearly the same transmission and as a result there can be a shop or two in town that specializes in them. If a town has a Porsche dealer it should be big enough to support a ZF transmission shop.
The problem with your Tip though is the Tip is repairable. It may not be a good candidate for a repair but the person to ask is the head of the Tip transmission shop.
Since you are in NC (like me), here is my advice:
Call Rob at DC auto in Rocky Mount, NC......he has the biggest Porsche "junkyard" in the East Coast.....very nice guy to work with, if he does not have it, he probably can get it......he has so many 996's in there, that I would not be surprised if he has a transmission for your car.....by the way, last time I was there, he had several, and ranged in price from 2300 to 3500 dollars.........assume another 1000 for remove and replace.......
Here is the deal man, I may be your savior here.
I still have the spare MY 2002 tiptronic from the C2 Cab with 44k miles laying in my garage. I bought it as a spare for my car, it is in the picture that KCattorney loves to post so much. It is still shrink wrapped from the original seller.
$1,250 + you arrange shipping and it is yours. It is 356lb and was shipped to me on the pallet, so that will give you an idea how much to pay for shipping.
PM me if interested in this.

That's damn cheap for a piece of Rennlist 996 lore there!
Of course if you purchase and install this transmission you may have odd urges to take shirtless pictures of yourself and post them on the internet. We can't help you much there though.
Went through my records and found the original Paypal receipt for it, and it has a link to the listing. So OP, you can verify when/where I got the tranny.

$25k? Lol
Let this be an expensive lesson never to buy an autotragic next time.
Way to step it up Kalashnikov, but wtf do you still have that tranny? After all this time?
As for shipping, you may want to check out uShip for larger items like this.
Oh, and also find a good Indy in your area.
been waiting patiently for someone...anyone to say something about the OP's forum name:
KRAZYK
86CU
P.S. maybe I am just seeing things. or maybe I miss him
First of all
krazyk86cu,
I feel your pain. Nothing worse than buying a car (regardless if it's a Porsche or not) and just a few weeks down the road have catastrophic transmission/torque conv failure. I agree with all the posts, I wouldn't dare put $25K into this car. I'd snag that transmission from
Kalashnikov
while it was still available. This whole story makes me want to go out into my garage and pray over my '03 cabriolet.
Well, once I sold the 996 I posted it on the CL a few times, nobody was interested. I called a couple German repair shops in Phoenix saying that I have a 722.6 Porsche Tip, they weren't interested. Mercedes tips generally don't fail, hence there isn't huge demand for them. It has been a garage ornament for 1.5 years now.
The problem is that there are two KKs. The first is actually helpful, pretty knowledgable, and sometimes even a little funny. The second, however, is a complete jackass that can't stop ranting about how the 996/M96 is the worst thing in the world and should all be less than $5.
The former I kinda miss. The later is hopefully trapped under an improperly supported engine that he was removing for no good purpose.
Sorry, krazyk86cu, Kalish's tranny is no longer available. I just bought it.
J/K. Hey, this sounds fantastic.... you'll be all set for less than the price of a set of tires. Shipping should be about $300. That's what it cost for me to ship a palletized motor cross-county.

Wow! Just saw all these replies! You guys are indeed saviors! Dors that transmission come with the torque converter? I'm at work all day today (8am to 9pm) so I can't really look into it easily over my phone.
Interesting thread, it will be nice to see the OP buy the tranny and get out of dodge with a reasonable bill!! And why do they call them Stealerships??
Whoda thunk cuda would be the beneficiary of that one time I was sober. And my wife was so hopeful.
The idea that kalesh is gonna put that tranny into a car owned by a krazyk is the most rennlist thing to ever happen.
Klash likes to post pictures of himself doing different things. Mostly sans shirt.
There is one that keeps popping up time and again of him (shirtless of course) moving a transmission through a parking lot as if it fell off the back of a truck. We have great fun with him every time it is posted.
Turns out, this is the transmission in question
Where the hell is KC anyway? How has he
NOT
offered up the pic in question yet? It's slipping around here...
That will be a requirement for the sale. You have to re-create my photo, that will only add to the lore.
I am sure if you ever decide to sell the car afterwards, it will be worth 2x more than the comparable 996 once you mention which transmission it has....
You better grab up that trans for sale right the fluck now before I buy it out from under you. Go find a TC if it doesn't have one.
Pretty darn strange that the TC would damage the trans. Strange indeed. I can see it the other way maybe.....
Just don't ask about Kalash's "other" tranny. That's not a sight you want to see.
Pretty sure they met at that naked Valentine's party or whatever freak show that was, a few months back.
You referenced KK and picking up a tranny in the same thought.
Doesn't look like he is banned, at least it doesn't say so on his profile. He hasn't posted since 1/30 though.
If its the Mercedes Trans, then its not that strange. 5 speed trans is the 722.6 transmission, which is a great trans except for the torque converter and the conductor plate, (namely the magnetic speed sensor on the conductor plate that gets choked up with material).
Torque converters come apart, they are a 50-50 shot.
That's a great deal OP. i'd take it.
KrazyK and I have each others phone #s, he is checking on shipping from my address.
We'll keep you guys posted.
This transmission comes with torque converter, so he should be set once it arrives.
I will post some pics of it on Saturday when it is light and I have time.
Still waiting on the transmission guy to let me know something. He wants to know what caused the failure before he does anything. No sense in putting in a new trans or rebuilding it if the car is just gonna eat it again. He's supposed to call me Monday. Technically today lol
Here's wishing you the best from Georgia! I've been closely watching your posts and I find your story heartbreaking. I basically (see picture) have the same car with the exception of the transmission... mine is manual. I always dreamed of owning a Porsche from the days when I was in high school seeing Tom Cruise in Risky Business made his famous line "Porsche, there is no substitute!". From a Porsche standpoint... unfortunately, we live in the south and that means American muscle cars rule the roost if you get my drift. hahaha Most have high respect for the 911, but some just don't get it until they drive one, then they change their mind. However, the high cost of maintenance and crazy expensive service makes you wonder if it's worth the investment, especially when you hear stories like yours or the dreaded IMS failures and such. I've owned mine for almost a year now and have nothing but praise for the car. It's been very reliable and hasn't caused a bit of trouble, but I wonder if I walking to close to the edge just waiting for something to crumble under my feet? I can't imagine paying $26,000+ for any car and then have it destroy a transmission three weeks down the road and then hear the dealership say it's going to cost $25,000 to repair a car you just bought for $26,000. Yikes! Was that the same dealership that sold you the car?
It was indeed. Leith Porsche in Cary NC. Thanks for the kind words. The 911 has always been a dream car for me. That's funny you mention muscle cars as my other ride is a 2016 Mustang GT. Haha. After having the Porsche for a few weeks it's all I want to drive though. Beautiful cab you got there yourself.
When I was looking it came down to the one I picked and an 03 cab with a stick, twice the miles on it, navy roof, five owners and an accident on the carfax. Who'd have thought the 50k mile car with 2 owners would be dead in less than a month.
Ouch... BIG OUCH! Personally, if I bought a used car from a factory dealership, and the car died in three weeks, I'd be all over them to make it right, especially if it was the dealership's brand. They have all the proper resources to check and repair these cars out before a sale, but unfortunately, the law is on their side in regards to *used* car sales and so it all boiled down to if they want to make it right in order to avoid any backlash or harm to their reputation. This is a very personal subject with me because we've seen it happen first hand. My nephew bought a used Dodge truck (for the record, I'm not a dodge truck fan) from a local Dodge dealership and just a few weeks down the road the engine blew.
He had took it to them just a week before it happened and explained to the service manager that the truck's check engine and temp lights were coming on. They supposedly checked it out and said they didn't see anything wrong. The next week it gave up the ghost. And of course, the dealership refused to take responsibility and said, "sorry chap, you bought "As-Is"; therefore, it's yours to repair!"
After many attempts to get the dealership to do the right thing, my nephew's father went on FB and told the story. Not asking for a protest or black-mailing the dealership in anyway, but just to tell the story to all of his friends in case they were in the market. And before long, the story spread like wild fire and everyone was reading the story (including the dealership)... a day or two later, the owner called him apologizing for the mishandling of the situation and said he'd take care of it. They installed a new motor and the truck ran perfectly. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire. Being nice doesn't always get results.
Is it normal for mechanics to just dick around? I swear to God this always happens. Dropped the car off at Porsche on a Friday. They said they'd have some answers Monday. Nobody calls me until I call them and they say they'll know something Tuesday. Tuesday comes and same thing. Then again on Wednesday.
I call a transmission shop and he says they'll have an estimate the same day I drop it off. Drop it off Friday, and he says he'll try and get it done by Saturday, but it might be Monday. Fine. I waited till Monday and he says he left just been researching the car. He's gonna have to get the serial number off the transmission. Might have an estimate tomorrow.
Is this **** the norm? Some mechanic kept pushing back stuff over and over with my buddy's bike and it turned out it was some kinda of "mechanics lein" scheme. Should I be worried?
i would sit tight and let things happen - last thing you want to do is **** off the shops with any sign of being impatient - i'm sure everything will work out and really great news that you were able to find a good used transmission for the price you paid.
if mechanic can't get to it by mid-late in the week then i would start asking questions
Yes.
99% of the people who say "I'll call you right back" never call back. At least, if it's someone that you want to actually call back. If it's somebody you don't want to talk to (ex: insurance salesman), they will call back, incessantly.
Have you get the transmission checked by Mercedes specialist? 722.6 transmission often has issue with conductor plate. There are many cases that they lost drive and reverse when conductor plate breaks on these transmission.
Mine just leaked from connector seal. Porsche does not have the replacement and the way Porsche handle it is through reman trans. My mechanic managed to get the part from Mercedes dealer for $14 and it fixed my leak.
Krazy,
Every time they're about to dive into your car somebody else comes in and your car gets pushed to the back burner. It's quicker and easier for them to do one more oil change or brake job than tear into your engine. Don't take it personally, it's pretty typical actually (yes, it sucks).
All these comments definitely make me feel a little easier about it. I've always believed in doing what you say you are going to do so its just really aggravating getting a runaround.
I'll leave the guy alone for a few days and let him do his thing.
The transmission guy originally told me he could have the car running in 4 days. He called me last Thursday and told me he would have to take out the transmission and get into it to figure out what's wrong. He said I'd have to authorize a 1000 dollar fee to do that and that the 1000 would go towards the rebuild if I decided to go that route. So I called him today and he hasn't even touched the car. He said he should have an idea by Friday. Bare in mind he originally told me he would have a ****ing estimate the same day I brought damn car in.
He's got your car now, you're pretty much at his mercy unless you want to send a flat bed over there. He's got no real incentive to work quickly, as the longer he strings you along, the more desperate you'll become. Have you looked into his background at all? BBB? Internet, etc. ? I'm just saying be careful, and don't be surprised if he makes you a silly lowball offer for the car. Good Luck
This kinda sketch stuff is what I was worried about from the beginning. He's he only person I could find nearby that worked on ZF transmissions. If he doesn't have an estimate for me by Friday I will have a flatbed there to pick up the car whether the transmission is in there or not.
what happened to the tranny offered by Kalash? $1250 + shipping (TC included) + labor to swap sounds much better than your mechanic charging you $1000 to hunt/find what went wrong in your old one (then credit that $1K to total bill for parts and labor).
your car is 2002 right?? Your transmission is not made by ZF. It is daimler 722.6 transmission. It is not an exotic Porsche only transmission.
It is the same base with mercedes, AMGs, jaguar and Chrysler (300, charger, jeep grand cherokee).
Transmission comes with different names. Chrysler call it W5A580, mercedes 722.6 and even Jaguar uses it for XJR/XKR.
Any shop that can work on Mercedes or late Chrysler transmission should be able to work on yours.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merced...n#Applications
The reason I'm leaning towards rebuild is because it will come with a warranty. If I don't know what caused the failure who's to say the car won't eat the new transmission?
KK #2
I'd get my car out of that place. You have a fantastic offer from a good R'lister on a low mile tranny. Get it and stop following someone else's rules.
I totally agree with buying the used transmission as I have basically never heard of one of these failing.
A transmission shop should be able to troubleshoot fix this, if they know what they are doing. However, because not many fail, they won't be familiar with it. It will come back to you with problems after the rebuild. And then you'll have to bring it to them again and it still won't be fixed the second time.
Cut your loses, buy the used transmission, and have a transmission shop install it....that should be about $500-800, they could take it out and put it back in within 3 hours I imagine....maybe even two if they have never seen the car before.
+996. as already pointed out several times, the Mercedes tranny enjoys a solid rep as being "bulletproof". or you can continue TRUSTING this shop/mechanic who has done nothing but fail to meet promised deadlines or give you empty promises.
As kromdom says, it's a very robust transmission. I have heard failures like you described in mercedes.
From what mercedes people are saying, there are 2 possibilities. Conductor plate/hydro electric system or torque converter failure due to ATF water contamination (oil to coolant heat exchanger failure).
This transmission is known for conductor plate issue. There are cases of people loses drive and reverse when the conductor plate shorted out.
Typically issue started with connector seal started to leak, owner ignores it as leak is not significant (and looks like trans pan seal seep) and letting oil into the electrical connection and shorted the electrical system. When this thing happens, you need a new conductor plate and also the transmission/body control module.
There is a shop in NJ who can build this transmission to the next level with reasonable cost:
http://www.importperformancetrans.co...ts-2685-1.html
Here is an update for the hungry audience. I spoke to KK on the phone earlier today, we are working on arranging the shipping. To make this fair and transparent I am not taking any money upfront; once he installs the transmission and car is fully working and drives I will take the $$$.
I can assure you there will be no requests for a payment plan. Lol.
There will however be an obligatory shirtless picture with my 911 and famous transmission.
A single shirtless picture is not acceptable. If you decide to go that route, there will need to be uncomfortably shirtless photos in no less than five locations around the world. I encourage you to rethink taking the red pill and heading down the Kalashnikov rabbit hole...the blue pill is where it's at.
FI - NA - LLY.........you went with the NO BRAINER option that people have been begging you to go with.
NOTE: Huge props to Kalash for making this deal even better with an unheard of guarantee.
So I finally received the quotes from my transmission guy. According to him the transmission is completely destroyed and not capable of being rebuilt. He gave me a few options for getting a used transmission or remanufactured one and the cheapest option was still over $10,000.
So with that, I had decided to pay the transmission guy what I owe him for "diagnosising" the issue, accept Kalash's generous offer and tow the car to Porsche and just let them install the transmission because I really didn't want this guy working on the car anymore. They quoted me about $1300 to put the new trans in given the old one is already out.
I get to the shop to tow my car and he points out the car is immovable. It's on one of his two lifts with a jack holding the engine up. Without the transmission there's nothing left to support the weight of the engine so it can't be towed. Also, the entire rear suspension is disassembled so he'd have to put that back on for the car to even roll.
With that said, I'm just going to let him do the work. Including the costs of him removing and tearing down the old trans, he's charging me aound 1800 for everything. Which at least would be cheaper than paying him a 1000 for the "tear down of the old one" and then 1300 to the Porsche dealer.
Kalash's transmission should arrive in NC around next Wed or Thursday. I'm looking very much forward to this nightmare ending. It was quite disappointing when I received my new plates and a second garage at my apartment complex with no car to put them on or in
i would suggest keeping a positive attitude with the shop holding your car hostage. better to keep the peace and get the install completed.
if you tally the numbers, with the great deal on the used transmission your total costs (used tranny/shipping/labor)will basically add up to the cost of a good used transmission w/o install so you are going to be ahead of the game - this could have easily been a $5-$6000 expenditure.
I certainly agree. Even when telling him I wanted Porsche to finish the work I was very nice. My reasoning to him was that the car might need to be towed to a third party to have the transmission synced to the ECU and Porsche would be able to do that in house if required.
I wish I could say I/We didn't see that coming...The guy's a Scumbag! In any case, given the circumstances, I think
Groovzilla's
recommendation is a good one...no sense in poisoning the atmosphere now. Chalk it up to experience and move on...
Best of Luck
A transmission shop can remove/install a transmission without issue if they are worth $0.50.
I think you'll be okay....looking forward to a good end to the story!
Well, we all here in the forum feel your pain. I don't want to add anymore pain to your experience, but I think overall, you've made a wise decision to purchase the used transmission from Kalash and move on with life. I can empathize with your situation because I've personally been down this road before. I'm not sure about the laws in NC regarding used car sales, but in Georgia, if you sign on the dotted line and drive the car off the lot, it's yours warts and all. The law provides very little protection in these situations. It would have to be outright fraud for a court to even hear a case like this in Georgia... we're not talking small claims here. There used to be a "Cooling off" law in Georgia that allowed you 3 business days and if you wanted to return the vehicle, you could for any reason. But now, that law has been abolished due to political pressure from the dealers. Anyway, don't let yourself feel like you've purchased a lemon. Get the shop to give you some sort of warranty and go enjoy the car. It's a beautiful machine that experienced an anomaly. Most wouldn't be surprised if it were the IMS, but of all the problems I've read about in the past few years, I've never heard about catastrophic failure of the tiptronic transmissions with a low miles MkII 996. I'm sure others on the forum may have a different opinion. But again, I've seen your car and it looks just like mine. I've taken advice from so many here on the forum and one thing I remember, is DON'T drink the "Porsche-it-will-die-any-minute" Kool Aid.
Cheers!
So can he guarantee you that he'll be able to sync the new tranny as part of the original estimate?
This type of tactic of some shops disassembling everything to keep the car hostage at their shop seems to be prevelent these days.
Good luck.
Whoowy am I different that the crowd here. If a place has already bent me around on the time spent, and the cost of stuff where I now KNOW that they are crooks I would just tell him to get it off the lift, and set it on a flat tow and get it out of there. Make sure you get all your parts, trans, etc and take it away as soon as possible. Put some used tires on the flat, and set it on that then deal with the car somewhere else.
After getting it done, I'd consider going after the shop in small claims(depending on amount) and make him defend his story. Kinda hard to see a guy taking this kind of screwing mostly because he drives a nice car, and is a nice guy. I'm pretty steamed, but I guess that's what the world comes to expect.
YMMV, don't try this at home, contents have settled and may cause **** leakage.
Trans got picked up few minutes ago. En route to Kk.

He's not going to sync the trans, he knows a guy who had the computer to do it and they are gonna tow it to him if need be.
And in fairness, the rear suspension had to be dissambled to remove the trans. It's a cluster**** underneath that car.
Also, the way I see it, every day he leaves my car on 1 of his 2 lifts he losing business on quick oil changes and what not.
Not true, you don't need to disassemble suspension to remove tranny. It's a cluster down there because the guy doesn't know what he's doing.
It will be interesting to see if he'll pull through with his original estimates, or if you will be posting in 2weeks on how you still don't have your car back and the trann still doesn't work because he can't get it sync'd.
Best of luck.
I've been following this thread with a mix of awe and disbelief.
I must say that I agree with all of those suggesting you get the car out of that shop pronto. While he may know trannies he surely doesn't know Porsches.
On the top shelf is everything needed to remove the manual tranny from a C4. Since you have a tip you have a few extra connectors and hoses but you will note there are NO suspension pieces on that shelf.
Parts removed
The tranny
The hole were the tranny goes.
Hey man all the best - Sounds like you'll be driving soon.
I think you made a great decision - What a great thing when fellow members help one another out. Kalashnikov was really giving and amazing someone would offer a gift like that!
Looking forward to hearing back when you are back on the road!
Yea, I echo Groovzilla's comments, we're all rooting for you man. We're also hoping you'll post some pictures of the car once it's back on the road. I took my '03 cab out tonight after work, and I'll have to say that driving a 996 cab with the top down is the best form of therapy. ha!
Thanks everybody! There will definitely be pictures once I have the car back. I'm really hoping to have it by next Thursday. Based on my work schedule that would be the next day I'd be able to make it down there. Unless they had it finished Monday morning of which I'm not holding my breath haha
Transmission came in around 1pm EST. They should have it ready by Monday. If not then I'll pick it up the following Thursday which will be my next day off. I'll keep everyone updated.
Just received a call that my 996 is ready to be picked up! I'll be able to pick it up first thing Monday morning!
They did have to synchronize the gears but they were able to do it using a colleague's computer.
I ended up meeting the guy today to pick up the car. We go on a test ride and the car works fine. It drove seemingly normal.
We get back and I pay him and leave. I'm getting on highway with my girl friend following me in her vehicle and all of a sudden the car just revs. No drivetrain at all. I coast into a parking lot and same thing as last time. No reverse, no drive. The only warning light was for the convertible top which I managed to fix.
Please spare me the "I told you so's." I'm having the car towed to Porsche so thy can look at it. I'm done with this guy. Is there anything I can to do re-coup some of the funds I paid this guy? Or am I going to have to eat this bill.
Omg!!! I'm without words. I can't believe it! Actually after reading some of the posts about his work, it doesn't surprise me. I would hold him responsible. You have a witness ( girl friend) and note anything and everything you see. Get an objective evaluation of the problem. Notify him and have witness listen to his response. I would demand he take full responsibility, but be warned, he'll probably blame it on the used transmission or some "hidden" problem with Porsches. Good luck man and sorry to hear this... We were hoping for the best!
This is unbelievably weird?? I can't imagine low coolant having anything to do with the problem you describe.
I would have taken the car back to the guy who did the repair and at least have him witness the issue. And if too late for that, at least get him the evaluation from the Porsche dealer and go from there. The Porsche dealer will get to the root cause for sure. If it's negligence on the mechanic's part then it will be easier to rectify knowing the issue at hand.
If it's the same issue as last time then perhaps it wasn't a transmission issue all along?? Maybe your old transmission is good - Hope he kept it.
Man i hope it's something simple to figure out - All the best and keep us posted.
Let him(mechanic) know asap what is going on with the car and tell him to hold your check - It's Sunday so theres no way he deposited or cashed it - Did you pay cash??
I'm not mechanically inclined enough to know whether any of this could have been avoided - Ashai and others more mechanically inclined will have a better handle on it.
I think at this point the smartest thing to do is to take it to Porsche dealer and have them troubleshoot the issue. Something is not making sense here. If the issue can be resolved with another inexpensive repair or adjustment so be it and have Porsche do the work, have mechanic cash check and move on - If problem is more involved and not the fault of mechanic at least you will get the answer and then deal with it. *make sure your old transmission is kept in his shop - would be great if there was something else more simple causing the transmission problem and your old transmission is good. I can't imagine the used transmission you got could work fine for test drive and then just crap out?? Wish I had an answer for you brother!
Others will chime in with maybe a better game plan but you need to find out whats causing this problem and at this point taking it to the Porsche dealer I feel is the best move for an assessment of the issue at hand.
The fact that it drove fine before giving you the exact same symptoms as your original failure is very strange.
Your coolant tank pic may be relevant here. I know that tip cars have three radiators, I am not sure if one of them is an ATF- Coolant ex-changer?
I would think if you had coolant mixing with ATF, your mechanic would have caught it when taking out the original transmission.
Questions: What codes do you have? All major Tip issues have codes - espy TC issues.
Have you tested the TCU?
These units are not a big deal to rebuild - most shops that handle Merc transmissions can do them.
There are several solenoids inside the case that can cause many issues - one of them being stuck in neutral as well as the control mapping in the TCU could be suspect if the TCU has gone bad. You need a PWIS 2 tester to properly diagnose the tranny as it can fire up all of the functions of the transmission and point you to where the issue is. It is RARE for a catastrophic failure without any systems reporting in.
Your mechanic is a joke and he purposely took apart your car to make sure you wouldn't go somewhere else. Normally these scum then low ball you a price to buy your car and then fix the issue and flip the car for a profit. You should have gone to a dealer. (I have a Tip myself)
I'm not denying that he is a joke. But the issue is, I originally took the car to Porsche. They told me there were no codes, just clutch material in the trans fluid and that the only option for them was replacing the transmission.
Can't understand the lack of codes but, regarding replacement: That's what dealers do - they believe rebuilding units is a liability issue. Parts replacement is what they do. Specialists for these units (I know one - but he's in Canada) have rebuilt many of both the Daimler and ZF Tip's.
Am I correct in that this new failure is identical to the original one? What are the odds??
What is your next move?
Yes, as far as feel, it was the same. Only difference is the transmission went while I was driving this time rather than after I had come to a stop. Also, the gear shifter did not seem to fit properly when moving between drive, neutral and reverse.
I ended up towing the car back to his shop so he'd at least have the chance to make it right. He'll probably get the guy who synced the transmission to run it for codes.
The guy with AAA who towed me mentioned he had some business cards of guys who only worked on Porsches. I feel like that is going to be my best bet of this guy doesn't figure it out. If there is no resolve with the joke mechanic I'll probably take it back to Porsche to see if they can figure it out. If they want to put in another transmission I'm just gonna have to find a Porsche specialist.
I'm really just terrified that the car ate Kalash's transmission. If I have to buy another transmission I'm afraid I'm going to have to just tow the car to my garage and let it sit :/ I just can't afford to keep playing this game.
Hey Man,
I remember you said that you first took it to Leith Porsche in Cary NC and the service manager reported back to you that the "torque converter went bad and took the transmission with it". That being said, did your indy replace the TC along with Kalash's transmission? Based on the dealership's evaluation, that was the culprit, right? Hopefully, it didn't repeat history and eat Kalash's transmission. It's going to be hard to find another deal like that and I'm sure you don't wanna swallow the $25K plus charge from the Porsche dealership. They were supposed to send an appeal to the Porsche corp. office (I'm assuming in Atlanta), did they ever give you an answer on that one way or the other?
Not trying to add insult to injury, but this is turning into a money pit that (personally) the dealership that sold you the car should have taken care of from the beginning. You didn't even have the car 30 days... still had the darn temporary Dealer tag on it. OUCH OUCH OUCH... please pass the Vaseline!
Just speaking off the top of my head, so take it with a HUGE grain of salt. A couple of years ago the tranny in my S430 started acting up. Took it to a well-regarded MBZ indy who replaced the TCU. That seemed to fix the problem for about 3 weeks. Took it back and he repaired something else and that worked for a few days. At that point I'm over $2,000 in and he had the car each time for quite a while, so I'm not inclined to take it back to the guy. I did some research and concluded it was the conductor plate - a very common issue with MBZ transmissions and also a relatively easy and cheap DIY fix. So I did it myself and no problems since.
Moral of the story is don't assume the professionals always get it right the first time. Or the second.
Given that these transmissions have a very good record of reliability, what are the odds you've had two completely crap out? There is something else going wrong here that no one has correctly diagnosed.
Regardless of what is the issue, my girlfriend has been digging into the laws surrounding used car sales. It specifically states that used cars MUST be sold with a buyers guide with AS IS or WARRANTY checked. The guide must be conspicuously adhered to the windshield or Windows or under the windshield wiper. I was not given this form when I purchased the car. And in every pic I took of the car prior to buying the car the form is nowhere to be found.
Any chance I could go after the dealership over this?
You may remember my "Dodge story" and if you want my humble opinion, I say a "BIG YES". If they didn't give you anything in writing that states the car has
NO
warranty, DOA guarantee, and sold "AS IS", then I would contact the owner/manager of Leith Porsche and have a meeting. You have a very unique case and I would give them the opportunity to make things right. If they refuse, then you could either take the "tell the world approach" or take it court and let the judge decide. Unfortunately, this is not a small claims case and so you would have to hire an attorney and all that. Can get very messy and expensive especially if you lose the case.
The purchase agreement states that they disclaim any expressed or implied warranties, but according to the Federal Trade Commission, that Buyers Guide must be present.
krazyk86cu
Just out of curiosity, did he say what was trashed? It's pretty hard to believe that a tip would be so far gone it couldn't be rebuilt unless the case was damaged. It sounds more like a control issue than a mechanical breakdown. I don't recall you mentioning any significant noise before failure. Why don't you take your old tranny to someone that knows Porsche tips and see what they say about its condition? Since it is essentially the same failure, I would look toward electrical/electronic problems. You may just own two perfectly good tip trannies.
Of course it is also possible he took your old one apart and has no idea how to put it back together.
I know that taking the car back to him sounds reasonable and there are a lot of good people on this forum suggesting to give him a chance to make it right. I am not one that likes to provide on-the-job-training. I have seen far too many exotics that have been damaged by very good mechanics working on cars they are not familiar with. Jaguars, Porsches and Ferraris are very different from each other and the mechanic needs to be familiar with the idiosyncrasies of the marque. It does not follow that a guy that knows MB can fix a tiptronic unless it is a purely mechanical malfunction.
I purchased cars before that didn't have a buyer guide sticker on the window, but was presented several forms that stated the car was sold "AS IS" with NO warranty. I was required to sign them to finalize the deal.
But again, if you signed a bill of sale or other documents, then you need to check them and see if anything states that it was sold without any kind of DOA agreement or warranty. If you have nothing that states the car was sold as-is, then I would definitely be requesting a meeting with the owner. Cheers!
My point isn't that I was led to believe the car had a warranty. My point is that the FTC specifically states it MUST come with a buyers guide. Not any other document regarding the lack of warranty but specially a buyer guide.
I originally assumed any used car old enough to no longer have a manufacturer warranty is AS IS which is why I mentioned that earlier in this thread. I assumed there was no protection for me as a buyer. But if that one detail (lack of buyer guide) might help me not be out of close to 30 grand (now) for a large pretty paper weight I'm going to look into it.
Mechanic just called me. He says that reverse is working and they are able to reverse around in their parking lot. Perhaps I didn't give it enough gas when I tried, but it sure didn't reverse for me. He hooked it up to his computer and it shows that when you put it in whatever gear that the computer knows it's in the correct gear, however none of the gears work.
He is going to get his colleague with the VW/Porsche computer to come scan it as the next step.
Hey man, there might be a little light at the end of the tunnel. I'll let the Rennlist technical experts respond on the current performance of the mechanic's install, but at least he's trying to make it right. We're all hoping he didn't install it improperly and toast another transmission. Again, I'm empathize with you over the fact that you bought a car from a factory auth. Porsche dealer only to have it chew up a tranny just three weeks down the road. IMHO, they should have owned up to this instead of charging you for the service evaluation and such. Oh well, here's hoping your indy proves us all wrong! Cheers!
Also, I just called a shop that restores and repairs exotics (Ferrari, Porsche l, etc) to see if they had any thoughts. Guy was very nice and is going to check and see if that's something they can handle or at least find someone who knows what they are doing.
Sorry to hear about the troubles.
However, based on your statement above, I would really be looking at the mechanical shift linkage set up. I know a lot about the ZF Audi transmissions, and if you don't have the mechanical linkage set up correctly, which controls a multi wafer switch along with providing mechanical input into the transmission, it will have symptoms similar to what you state.
I'm not saying this is it, but I would be looking very closely at the procedure on how to set this up and check it twice. I am going to look it up in the manual for my own info.
And having a Durametric is absolutely required (or other scan tool that can read the transmission) so you know what the transmission is seeing.
Best of luck!
The used car dealer must have had you sign the as is no warranty sheet of paper when you purchased the car - it's the large sheet taped or stuck to the window of the car. they may not have given you a copy but i would almost guarantee they have it in the purchase and sale file with your signature on it. it is a routine procedure with any used car and one of the most important documents to protect the seller.
I agree with Toronto... what are the odds? I'd say about 0.00%.
As asked above, what, specifically, was so "trashed" about the first tranny that made it unrebuildable? I'm finding this very hard to believe.
also wanted to reply to the other posts regarding mercedes transmissions - i've owned several MB and both my 2000 E320 & 2003 E320 had transmission issues and both under 100K miles - both models had same issue of kicking into limp mode. lots of info regarding the inherent problem.
point being this issue was directly related to another source not the transmission - one of the sensors was responsible for the problem
Groov: I'll bet you had the conductor plate problem. It's very common with those transmissions, but also very easy and inexpensive to fix. That's what I had with my 2006 S430 transmission.
The first two times it was in the exalted MBZ indy's shop, it was misdiagnosed. Yet, they still charged me $1,100 for the first repair and over $900 for the second repair. They had my car for 5 weeks the first time and 2 weeks the second time. Bottom line, they clearly didn't know what they were doing even though they are supposedly one of the best MBZ indies in Kansas City. After the second repair didn't fix the problem, that's when I started researching it myself. I saw the conductor plate issue being discussed all over the forums, so I figured I had nothing to lose since the next step the shop was recommending was to replace the transmission altogether. It was a relatively easy 2-hour DIY repair with about $200 in parts and fluids.
To me, it was incredible that they didn't suspect the conductor plate in the first place with the amount of info out there on the problem. It reminds me of the recent thread where the Porsche dealer mechanic started up an engine that was clearly exhibiting IMSB failure symptoms when it was flatbedded into the shop (thankfully that Rennlister had a warranty that covered the engine replacement).
Anyhow, we are talking about a machine - the answer is out there somewhere. OP - your first two mechanics simply haven't found the correct answer. That doesn't mean they are bad people. As others have said, the dealer is spring-loaded to recommend just replacement and I think the transmission guy you are using is just unfamiliar with what he's working on.
I know for a fact that a Buyer's Guide was not attached to the vehicle. And I honestly don't recall signing one. I guess the only way to no for sure would be to ask the dealer to show me the form I signed.
This could be very good news. I doubt though that you didn't give it enough gas. More likely he fiddled with it until it engaged. It could be just a mechanical adjustment at this point. At least he seems to be trying.
Still, same symptom twice? I'd want to know specifics on my first tranny. Just saying...
I've found a guy who does soley Porsches and he sounded extremely knowledgeable. However, even he admitted that transmission problems are so rare with these cars that he doesn't have much experience with working on the trans.
At lest he'll be able to troubleshoot rather than blindly guessing. I'm going to give my current Indie a chance to have his buddy run his VW/Porcsche computer on it and then I'm gonna request they tow it there.
The Porsche Indie did recommend disconnecting the battery for a minute and see if that reset the control module. I passed that along to the joke indie and he said now there is reverse in reverse and also neutral! What the hell?
By the way, most likely the reason the coolant was low was because he did not know how to properly bleed the cooling system after he hooked up the ATF cooler. Just another reason to stick to dealers or indies that know Porsches. Best is to stick to indies that know 996/997s as some specialize in the air-cooled cars and while still better than a non-Porsche shop, they may not know some of the gottchas of the early water-cooled 911s. Dealers are great but they rarely do used parts or fixes, they swap modules.
Before you do this, may I suggest that you dig up the stack/bundle of paperwork you got after you bought the car.
I am 996% sure they gave you a copy of everything you signed/initialled.
Best of luck
Don't jump from shop to shop anymore without knowing exactly how good the next shop is. That's how you go into this situation in the first place. Let the transmission shop see what they can do and go from there. Since you said the sifter didn't feel right when you picked it up, why did you pay and then drive away? Old exotic cars can get really expensive when you don't know how to fix them. So for the future, start a savings account for the repairs or learn how to fix it yourself.
If you think that "as-is" legislation will protect you, I don't think it will work at all. A piece of paper that was or wasn't on the windshield is irrelevant.
Believe me, I scoured every paper I've ever received from this dealership. A buyers guide is no where to be found. Me gf even drive by the dealer today after work and noticed that NONE of the used cars had the Buyers Guide posted.
It might make more sense to find out what is really wrong with the car before talking to the dealer. As in the earliest posts in this thread, maybe it really is something minor after all.
Maybe Macster was right after all.
So the indie said after disconnecting the battery and reconnecting, the car is now stuck in reverse for reverse and also neutral.
His friend he's been working with said that means the clutches are fused and will have to be rebuilt.
Does that sound like bull**** to you guys?
I've been watching this train wreck. Now seems like a good time to tell your shop that you don't really care what they think is wrong with it, you just want it fixed on their dime since you supplied them with a fully functional transmission....and now it isn't.
This is crazy. You need to either troubleshoot it yourself or bring it to somebody who can. This guy is crazy. It's an automatic transmission, they are easy.
I bet this is an electrical issue. More than one solenoid on at the same time or something like that. If the drums are fused, the transmission would be locked up even when the engine is off and the battery disconnected. Is this happening?
Since the shop didn't supply the transmission, they are not responsible if something brakes. You need to find out exactly what is going on as this shop seems to just guess.
This exactly. It sucks but that's the way it is. And there is no way I can prove that the used transmission was fully functional to begin with anyhow.
I'm really thinking it is something electrical. When he disconnected the battery something changed. I don't see why that would happen if it was mechanical.
I'm going to get the car out of there and to this place called GT Performance in Raleigh who actually work on Porsches.
I'm really sorry you are going through this. Since this is apparently not simply an adjustment, getting your car, and your old transmission, out of there as quickly as possible seems like an extremely good idea. One of the keys to owning any older exotic car is to find one, or more, shops that you trust and that know your particular marque very well. Most indies specialize and therefore they know the tricks, they have the manuals, they have the specialist tools, they know the other specialists and they know the suppliers; all vital information.
At this point don't worry about who is responsible for what or who can point their fingers at who else, get your car fixed. It is very doubtful that the new tranny is trashed, it is possible your old tranny isn't trashed. After you have the car fixed by someone competent is the time to worry about culpability. Right now you are at the mercy of others. Take control and next time a shop says, his buddy has the tool he needs, get out. If he doesn't own the tool he doesn't belong working on your car; ever.
If he really took apart some of the rear suspension, don't forget to get the Porsche indie to double check that work as well.
I would also talk to GT Performance and see if you can arrange to pay to have one of their guys go to the shop with you to load the car, and tranny, for transport. No sense letting some bozo muck it up worse by loading it incorrectly or leaving behind some vital part. You need expert help now to stop the bleeding.
Sorry to hear. This is a complete disaster. I hope it's something simple.
Have you talked to the dealer again? You should talk to the manager and explain what happened. If you don't get a good response I'd go by and take some photos of the cars in the lot without the required notice, and talk to an attorney. The technicality won't mean anything coming from you, but might carry some weight from an attorney. An assertive letter with a lawyer's letterhead can work wonders.
OUCH! BIG OUCH KrazyK!!! This story is like a plane spiraling out of control. Lawd, I sure do hope you find a solution soon. I won't add insult to injury regarding your choices in mechanics, but I would be getting my car (and two transmissions) out of there and to an factory authorized Porsche service center or well-known indy that specializes in newer (i.e. 996 or newer) Porsches. For servicing my 996, I've checked out the so-called "Porsche shops" in my area and after much research, I've found out that most of the Porsche mechanics only fool with are air-cooled Porsches, but some of them will claim to work on newer ones, but I won't take my car to them.
Not gonna do it, wouldn't be prudent!
Now, regarding the money you've paid this mechanic. If he's as incompetent as many experts on this thread have mentioned, then I'm pretty sure he'll blame Kalash's transmission as being the problem and try to put it on YOU and not refund your money. If it were me, I would demand a refund because clearly he could not fulfill his agreement to get the car running properly. Personally, he should have evaluated the transmission for functionality before installing it and if he's such a great transmission specialist, then he would have identified any problem areas at the beginning. But as others have mentioned, the fact that he had to take the whole car apart just to remove the tranny, shows that he doesn't know what he's doing... in other words, he's "learning on the job" and when he screws something up, he attempts to cover his tracks and say, "It's not my fault, it's that damn used transmission you sent me!". Lawdy, I hope you get a qualified technician next time!
KrazyK - i called my mechanic mark akers at akers porsche here in seattle and explained your issue. akers is one of the best shops on the west coast and 5 blocks from my home. they are like family to me.
mark said if it was his customer he would be reading the codes, checking the fluids and going from there. the electronic components that are the brain of the transmission need to be operating properly and if not, the codes should be readable. he can't understand why the codes have not been able to be read and that would be his first concern.
wish i could help more.
OP - Are you a PCA member? Following Groov's line of thought in reaching out to a real expert regarding this unusual mess, PCA has a committee of technical experts:
https://www.pca.org/technical-committee
It might be worth reaching out to them. Bill Burris, who I don't know from Adam, is the 996 expert on that committee. Maybe he can lend some insight or pull in some heavyweight talent to assess. The good thing is that you don't have to go into a long story - just direct him to this thread. My thought is that this entire scenario might be a cool story for Panorama. How many people have had a seemingly undiagnosable problem with a car? Probably most of us that have owned lots of classic cars. I hear stories like this here at the museum all of the time. What an opportunity for the PCA experts to ride in on a white horse and save the day and be able to showcase it all in the club magazine. Just a thought.
According to the dealer originally, they saw no codes. Also that's what the crappy indie said as well, although he couldn't even tell me what computer he or his buddy were using.
I'm not a member of PCA. I take it that it's a club with a forum as well?
As far as my mechanic, I've told him I wanted the car and the transmission towed to the new shop. I live an hour away from this place which is why it's a huge chore for me to just go down there and do anything. And I can't just demand any kind of r fund or anything because he never guaranteed anything. The only gaurantees came with letting him source the transmission for 9 to 15 thousand dollars.
PCA is the Porsche Club of America. You would probably be in the Carolinas Region. Most regions have web sites and even non-members can usually find some open forums or at least links.
Here is the links page for the PCA Carolinas Region:
http://carolinas-pca.com/Sponsors.aspx
.
There are a number of repair shops listed there. They do not appear to have a forum but if you reach out to one of the board members listed you can probably get a recommendation or two. This is no time to guess. Get a mechanic that other Porsche owners use and trust.
For what it is worth, the indie I mainly use is 50 minutes on a good day from me @ 75 mph. On a bad day...
It is worth it. You can do a lot on these cars yourself but when you need a mechanic, you need a good mechanic.
We also have an older GMC Envoy, we have a GMC dealer in town and dozens of indies. I take it to a GMC dealer 45 minutes away because I trust their work. Closer may be convenient but your life could depend on the quality of work.
Don't cheap out just because a 996 does not cost much to buy. It is still an exotic and it needs proper care. You would not believe the number of clapped out Ferrari 308s, 328s, 348s and Mondials because they were cheap, until you had to fix them. Now that all but the Mondials have doubled and tripled their value people are buying them up and then spending a fortune turning them back into sports cars.
I would not at this point worry about refunds. I know that is easy to say because it is not my money but with all due respect, you do not even know what is wrong with the car yet. If the new shops finds he was negligent, then talk to him. Same with the dealer. It looks to most of us like you really have an electrical/electronic issue and maybe both trannies are good but we are guessing. We are not with the car. It could (although very doubtful) turn out that both trannies are and were trashed. Fix the car, then worry about compensation otherwise you will get nowhere fast and at best get half-a** repairs just to get rid of you.
Asking someone at the local PCA for a shop recommendation is a MUCH better way of finding a good shop, rather than looking at who is listed on the PCA's site. Anyone can advertise, but some shops still reek. And some may be good shops, but vastly overcharge. Ask me how I know....
$46 to join PCA for a year!? I've done given all my money to this mechanic! Haha
I'm gonna join and post up a summary of this thread along with a link. I do have a good feeling about the new shop though. Before the guy even saw the car he started explaining how they'd first junk the electronics, fluids, control modules etc.
Haven't read the entire thread, but: California Motorsports in Lake Havasu City AZ does nothing but Porsche transmission rebuilding work. No personal connection.
If not for you, then perhaps others on the site can make use of them, so as to avoid the '$25,000 Dealer Transmission' phenomenon.
Hope you're back on the road soon, and sorry for your experience.
What are the chances that the electrical connection between the ECU and transmission is faulty and not truly a mechanical problem?
Another personal "Dodge" story (again, for the record, I'm not a Dodge truck fan)
My *other* nephew purchased a used Dodge diesel truck that was sold to him as-is only to have the transmission go into "limp mode" two weeks after owning it. Just like your Porsche, the car would start, rev up, but changing to forward or reverse did nothing.
He then towed it to his local Dodge dealership and paid them to hook it up to their diagnostic computer and evaluate the problem. They met with him and explained that the computer did NOT show any codes, but it was their opinion the transmission was "burned up" and needed to be replaced. And so, my nephew took their advice and purchased a used transmission from a wrecked Dodge at the tune of $3,000.00, but instead of taking it back to the Dodge dealership to be installed, his close friend (who happened to be a Dodge mechanic, but doesn't work at that local Dodge dealership) needed a favor and offered to install the new transmission. He installed the *new* transmission as promised, but the truck performed exactly like it did before... it would start, but would NOT go into any gears.
(An incompetent mechanic's immediate reaction would be "the second transmission was bad too, but this guy was smarter than that!)
He then began to trace and examine all of the electrical connections from the transmission to the ECU and notice ONE line (yep! just ONE line) that was broken at the ECU connector. He repaired the line and the transmission worked properly.
Can you believe that??? After paying $3,000 for the new transmission!!!
Now, that got both my nephew and his friend (the Dodge mechanic) wondering... "Could it be that the old transmission was perfectly functional?"
And sure enough, the old transmission was perfectly fine and didn't need to be replaced. Fortunately, he was able to resale it on Craigslist, but went through a lot of trouble because of some incompetent dealership mechanics couldn't think beyond their precious diagnostic computer... they just based it on their limited experience.
All in all, to repair the broken ECU line would have only cost less than an hour of labor. It all boils down to having the most experienced technician that has the knowledge and experience to correctly zero into the exact problem, provide proper solutions, and not go the easy "replace the whole thing" route.
Cheers!
Ok, Here we go. My friend, you bought another transmission for no reason.
This is more than likely your problem. Before the mechanically inclined jumped down my throat, this is a Mercedes Benz 722.6 transmission we are talking about here. They don't just burn up, with regular services (fluid and filter) they have been know to exceed 200k miles easily.
The pilot bushing (where the harness plugs into the transmission) is a known failure point of these transmissions. When (not if) they go bad, they tend to leak fluid into the harness, all the way up to the control unit. As we all know, fluid and electricity doesn't play very well together.
Check this first.
"All in all, to repair the broken ECU line would have only cost less than an hour of labor. It all boils down to having the most experienced technician that has the knowledge and experience to correctly zero into the exact problem, provide proper solutions, and not go the easy "replace the whole thing" route."
Hmmm, unfortunately the "stealership" model is to replace parts at book value and "book time". This is how they make money - not by selling cars, and certainly not by doing "us" any favors (i.e. finding simple, economical solutions)... It's just the way it is. The only "solution" on our end is to do as much work as possible on our own, and when absolutely necessary finding a good/honest/competent mechanic.
All depends on how much. Its is normal for there to be some clutch material. but if there is huge chunks, then yea, it's shot.
Did the shop send you a picture of the material in the original transmission?
The dealership is who mentioned the clutch material. They never said they're were hunks or anything.
The car should be leaving for the new shop around 12:30 to 1. The new indie is going to let me know if they old trans was actually opened up at all.
If he says it wasn't and I find out this other guy lied to me I'm definitely going to be paying him a visit with my lawyer.
Another thing that pissed me off... Is there any remote reason this guy needed to out my top down for the entirety that the car spent at the shop? I'm pretty sure the transmission isn't located inside the cabin.
The entire inside of the car was coated in a thick layer of pollen when I attempted to pick up the car on Sunday. I didn't even bother asking since I knew he'd make up some sort of "reason"
How do you know that the next shop is any better than the last two? Why are you relying on them to tell you if the transmission was opened up or now? Why don;t you have a look yourself ans see if the bolts look disturbed? Shops like to point fingers at each other if nothing more than to attract customers. You need to be 100% sure what happened so you need to check it yourself or else this will become a he said she said. If you go to court, you will hire the other shop as an expert witness? You will have to if you only rely on them.
Oh my goodness, that's unbelievable! I just recently took my C2 Cab to a body shop to repair and repaint a small dent in the rear corner. I specifically asked the owner/manager if there was any reason the top would be put down. I told him that I did not ever want it down inside a paint shop... period. He said he was personally make sure that it wasn't.
I wouldn't be surprise if he cut reverse donuts in the parking lot. I'll let you know if it shows up on YouTube. hehehe... sorry, don't mean to joke around. I know this has been a painful experience for you.
Cheers buddy... we're rooting for you!
I agree. Should be in Inverted torx bolt holding the pan on. E10 is the size. If im not mistaken the trans is already out of the car, so it should be easy to see. 6 bolt in total.

I live an hour away from either shop and work even further away. I'm a pharmacist and have a very busy schedule so I can't just take a quick ride over to the shop to do this stuff.
The new shop only works on higher end cars and exotics. They are certified Porsche mechanics. This other guy is just some indie who led me to believe this was be an easy breezy rebuild initially.
Glad to see you are getting the car to a different shop and I hope it all works out well for you. Most repairs do not go south like this and I'm sure once you are on the road it will all just become a bad memory. Nothing drives like a Porsche.
Take what Cuda said to heart. You may be lucky and your new shop may be great and inexpensive but still check with PCAers in the area. The difference in cost between two shops can be very significant. I have two shops within 5 miles of each other. One charges $50/hour less than the other. They are both equally good at repairs. The one that charges more also apparently sees into the future as several times they noted repairs my car needed that when I looked the car over on the lift of the other shop, were not needed (e.g. cracked CV boots that were just fine, and several more).
There are lots of us that don't have the time to run over to check personally or the even skills to self-diagnose their issues but that is why the right shop is so imperative. Local PCAers have lots of experience and compare notes. Nothing beats experience.
Doesn't matter what the new shop works on. Just because the have high end cars doesn't mean they know the 996 automatic transmissions. Have you asked them for references? Considering how bad things are right now, I would make absolutely sure the next shop is as good as they look. If you can't go, send your girlfriend or someone else to take pictures of the transmission pan. Heck, hire an Uber driver to go take the pics. Do whatever it takes so you don't have to rely on shops telling you what happened.
I haven't gotten them myself, but they are being brought to the new guy.
And as I mentioned, I have posted to PCA and I'm awaiting replays and recommendations.
Is he sending a money order for $1,800 + 20% contingency (for any damage to Kalash's transmission) seeing how he didn't fulfill his end of the service agreement.
Unfortunately since I did the supplying of parts there was jack guaranteed
Though if he lied about actually looking at my transmission I could potentially at least get back the "tear down" fee
Really? It's my understanding that this person told KK that he would be able to fully repair KK's car in the beginning. (Not sure if KK got it in writing, but judging from this person's poor mechanical methodologies and business practices, I would presume that he probably did NOT provide any type of written estimate or repair contract) Anyway, the mechanic diagnosed the problem by removing the 1st transmission, supposedly evaluating it, and told KK that it would need a full transmission replacement to get the car functioning properly. KK then provided a working transmission (based on Kalash's word) and the shop agreed to install and setup the transmission only to have it respond in "limp mode" like the other tranny. Leads one to believe this guy doesn't know what he's doing. He blames it on a locked down clutch. But many believe that it could very well be an electronic issue since these transmissions are considered bullet proof. But the guy gladly kept KK's money even though he could NOT fulfill his original agreement. We'll see what the next shop says.
What you wanna bet both transmissions are good? ha!
Some of you seem to be operating under the assumption that your mechanic is required to fix whatever is wrong for whatever estimate is made up-front. While OP has been jacked around six ways from go - which DOES suck, no question about it - mechanics aren't psychics. Nothing sucks worse than having to pay a wrench to fix the wrong part - but that's how it goes sometimes. What happens afterward varies - my Corvette whisperer would probably feel like crap, would go find the right part in his warehouse of Corvette stuff, and install it for free because he's the kind of guy who would rather lose a few bucks than have a customer lose confidence in him - but there are fewer and fewer of those, and more and more of the "It's $200 an hour, minimum one hour in one-hour increments, and I only do what the computer tells me to do" places...
Proceeding with the install of the 2nd gearbox with a mechanic in which OP had little faith was probably not the best choice...the new transmission went in and it still didn't work, so the part is going to be blamed. Mechanic is going to point at the part, owner is going to point at the mechanic, butts get hurt, and it all gets crappy.
Showing here.
OP, I hope you finally get some good news...
Believe me, I'm aware the only guarantee this guy made was that he would put the new transmission in.
Regardless, that doesn't change my opinion of him. For what it's worth I'm done with him. Once I have. My old parts at the new shop that's the last contact I'll have with him.
Even if turns out the transmission is locked up? You are jumping into conclusions way too fast. So far no one figured out what exactly happened yet. Let's wait and see what the actual problem is.
When you factor in how shady and unprofessional he has been towards me, the fact he took apart the entire rear end of my car, left my convertible top down for a month for no reason, pushed deadlines back over and over, never contacted me when he should have, etc etc... I'd say I have plenty of reason to be done with guy.
Also, I never mentioned it, but he started preaching to me about how the Bible is saying the end times are near and I should be prepping. LOL
I'm not making this up.
KK,
Ahhh I knew it... He's really a modern day Biblical prophet and that "end time" advice is prophetic code for ...
"Yo dam trannys are living in sin and doomed for destruction in fire and brimstone. You must purge yourself from the viles of this devil machine and... and sell it to me for $500!"
Do you know read the Bible KrazyK??!!! (((what?))) Say what again... say it!!!! DO YOU READ THE BIBLE???!!!!
“Ezekiel 25:17"
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."
They still haven't gotten my old transmission from the other shop. Today he is going to hook it up to his Durametric to scan for codes and what not. He also noticed that the shifter feels very awkward so he's gonna get it on a lift and check the linkages.
Let me get this straight... You towed it to the *new* shop last Thursday and he is just now connecting the car to a Durametric and the best he can tell you is that the gear shift feels very awkward? Forgive my apprehension, but I hope for your sake, you're not repeating history with this new shop.
Cheers... and here's crossing my fingers... and toes too!
That doesn't seem out of line to me for a good indy. Normally, I call the shops that I work with and they give me a day to bring the car in - rarely do I get "same day" service. It's almost always within a week, but almost never "sure we're not busy at all and we can get it done today."
Get the gear selector module from the other shop as soon as possible.
Since that part goes through the gear selector shaft, if it was ever removed and installed incorrectly, it can easily get destroyed when the transmission shifter goes past it's maximum limit of travel. The crappy part is, who removed it? The previous shop or someone before that?
Hmm, that's an awfully lot of codes for a transmission that supposedly had no codes previously. If it turns out to be what it looks like it's going to turn out to be, I think a phone call to "End Times Transmission Shop" is in order.
I sense an ebay auction in your future to sell a perfectly good 996 transmission.
Many on this thread have pondered the possibility that both transmissions could be good and that it's highly probable that this is a electronic malfunction and not mechanical. We'll see. Glad to see you have some potentially good new.
At least the new guy knows how to use text. hahahaha
KrazyK: Hope it's nothing more than something like what I posted previously! It looks like you have somebody that is at least is interested in fixing it and competent. Best of luck!
Didn't the first shop say the transmission was toast? Could the failed sensor cause a perfectly good transmission (or two) to grenade?
Hoping the answer is no.
Is this the first time you hear that transmission shows any codes?
Didn't Porsche dealer say your original trans had no codes, 1st mechanic saw no codes on your trans or mine?
I do not have any interest in learning the answer to this question.
Whatever game "she" is playing - crying or other - I do not want to participate in.
So they still haven't received my old transmission, so I called the old shop and the guy said, "oh, I actually forgot about that."
So I told him politely to please get it done already. Anyhow, he should get it over tomorrow.
The new shop didn't have a chance to touch the car today, but he's gonna check his theorems out tomorrow.
Crazy story. I hope you get it sorted out. I've known Gabe for several years and he's always had a solid reputation in the NC Porsche world so you are in good hands.
Thanks for the vote of confidence!
As far as the transmission, if he doesn't get it there in a few days I'm going to rent a pickup and get it on my next day off

B3, it's awesome to see how proud you are of your dads. A recent study showed that children raised in unconventional families are just as intelligent and well-adjusted as the children in "customary" homes.
i'm sticking to my theory that KrazyK would be back on the road had he used that mechanic he found off craigslist - the hairy 928 owner who sleeps with his sister
Wow... Just read the whole story, truly unfortunate. Here I was thinking my transmission issues were bad. (See:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...tiptronic.html
)
Anyway, hoping you end up with a simple fix like mine needed, KK. The highly regarded Porsche indie "specialist" I had taken my 996 to assured me they would not be like the dealer and just spring on suggesting a new trans - Unfortunately, after he assured me and knew for a fact that it was internal - he did exactly that. It always pays to do your research and get a second opinion, which it looks like you are doing.
The truth is, a very small percentage of 996's have auto. While it is a ZF product used in other German vehicles, I get the sense that mechanics just don't have the desire or know-how to do a repair on these things.
Fingers crossed for you. Keep the updates coming.
Actually, KK was forced to get a second opinion when the 1st mechanic didn't repair the car correctly. He unfortunately paid the guy $1800 (if my memory serves me well) before the car started to malfunction. If you add Kalash's costs for the 2nd transmission, towing fees, and the 2nd mechanic's work, he'll have spent well over $30K (probably a lot more) for a car he originally paid $26K for. I feel his pain. Lawdy.

Dennis, the sketchy mechanic brought in a bunch of parts in a tote that is supposedly my old transmission. Gabe is going to check the part numbers to make sure it is actually my transmission.
Simply mind boggling.
So does this mean that your car could've been a flood victim as well?
Does this guy have any recourse to bring it back to the dealer or have them pay for the repairs?
I'd much rather see a legal defense discussion here instead of on the original KK used car thread.
That new mechanic is a bad ***. He went simple first and likely found the culprit. It pains me to see you having to go through this nonsense. I hope the cable is indeed the fix. In the mean time I'd be getting as much money from the previous mechanic as I could. You paid him to disassemble something he knew nothing about.
Holy crap. Glad it's sorted out, but holy crap. 6 weeks and about $4000 for a $1000 repair.
I'd like to fault the dealer, no codes and won't go into gear makes it seem like the shifter would be the obvious place to look, but none of the guesses here guessed that.
Well, but most guessed it really wasn't a blown transmission, really from almost the very first reply posts.
Also, I don't believe any of us are certified Porsche mechanics working in a franchised dealership that charges top dollar because they are the experts. So, no, I'm not letting the dealership off the hook that easy. In fact, I fault the dealership more so than the inbred hillbilly transmission "mechanic". The dealership is the one that put the fear of God into OP, making him think he was in for a mega-dollars repair.
I'm kind of a jerk, but I think once everything is said and done, I'd cruise back over to the dealership and have a discussion about their initial diagnosis...something along the lines of "tell me more about the part where you wanted twenty five thousand dollars to fix a busted shifter."
This deserves something more than "well, they just got it wrong...s**t happens."
All of us have had the unfortunate experience of paying to fix something only to find out that it wasn't the root cause, but this takes the cake. B3Freak's photo in post 307 suddenly doesn't seem so far off the mark.
As an aside. Carpet out for some reason in a cab is easy to diagnose. Not flood damage. Clogged drains up front and a good rainstorm and you will figure out how to get the carpet out and how to clean the drains. I learned that in my first week of 996 cab ownership.
Ok. I'm correcting my view. If they said no codes we have no clue, then I understand. But they gave you a diagnosis and a $25,000 estimate. And they were wrong. So wow. Just wow. On a brighter note, you only spent $3000 instead of $25000 for a repair you didn't need.
It really is a shame you didn't throw the original tranny on the flatbed with the car. There is a chance the transmission specialist made sure the original tranny is no longer fixable. He certainly doesn't want a law suit...
Not to cast aspersions but he may have "forgot" about it while he found suitable replacement parts. Hard to prove the dealer wrong when all you have is a bunch of parts that somebody else took apart.
Devil's Advocate here, but it is possible the first tranny was toast all along.
Then the second tranny was incorrectly installed by the"mechanic" and failed as well. It could be two unfortunate events with 2 distinct and separate causes.
The fact the Dealer found no codes on tranny 1 is compelling.
The fact that the "mechanic" didn't know what he was/is doing is obvious.
The important question is, "What's Kalash's return policy?"
Finally, since Karma is a b!tch...when is the OP going to change his screen name and get rid of that KK? It's cursed...
This is about to join the esteemed ranks of such epic threads as "N20 in Gixxer Tank" and "Ran Garden Hose in my Mustang's Engine to Clean it, now it doesn't start???!!!".
And by the way KK, where are your pictures? 1st transmission in in pieces, go and fulfill that part of the deal man!
This.
Not to mention peeps are intermixing this guy with the original KK so posts will be confusing for future and current peeps. KK is someone I don't think you want to be associated with.
Wow. All along it ended up being a sub $1000 dollar fix. Very similar issues we had - with the initial mind boggling atmospheric repair number, only to find out it was a relatively "cheap" repair. All it took was a qualified and thorough mechanic. Although, yours ended up being way more of a nightmare. Glad you finally got it all sorted out.
Do you have your car back yet?
I'm interested to see how much a used shifter will cost through the current shop. But glad they found the problem. One more reason to learn how to fix you can and not rely on shops anymore. More and more just read codes and throw parts at them.
Unless the first transmission get installed in a car and tested that it works, it will be difficult to prove it wasn't broken. Lawyers will tell you many things and often will say what you want to hear. Then at the end, you'll end up paying more than the $3000 you are after so don't rush into getting one. Show your evidence to the dealer you bought the car and see what they are willing to do. The misdiagnosis suing will be a dead end because you took the car to a different shop afterwards. Everyone that touched this car will start pointing fingers heck, it has already begun. I would just mark this down as a $3K lesson and move on.
I'm with Imo000. While some of our attorney buddies here may vehemently disagree, I think that
some
attorneys say "I think you have a case" when what they actually mean is "I think I could get some money out of this guy."

unless the current shop comes back with an ridiculous price on the used shifter(ex. half price of a new one), I would not source my own. Let the shop take the chance that something is wrong with the replacement part.
Ho-Lee-****. As a new 996 owner, this thread scared the crap outta me! Thankfully, I have found a reputable indy shop very close to home.
Hope you are driving your car soon, Krazy.
We've already been down the "I got the part myself" road once with this tale - it's definitely time to step back and let the car get fixed. I can only imagine how much more chaos a busted second-hand shifter would add to this already sordid take.
DC Auto had the part for around $300 and I already told the indie to go ahead and get it from them yesterday.
Also, the pile of parts did indeed match my cars serial number. So at some point, the old indie did indeed tear the transmission apart. Lol
As far as the attorney, we have one on retainer through work benefits. The only challenge she sees is getting a court to feel sympathetic for a 26 year old with enough money to have a Porsche as a second car. Lol.
"As far as the attorney, we have one on retainer through work benefits. The only challenge she sees is getting a court to feel sympathetic for a 26 year old with enough money to have a Porsche as a second car. Lol."
KK - roll into court in a wheel chair and have your girlfriend wipe the constant drool from your chin
KK, please learn from the other situation... make sure you drive the car thoroughly (i.e. highway speeds) before paying for the job. But my gut feeling is, it's going to be done right this time. Cheers!
p.s. take lots of photos of the car. You should document everything... this would make for a great PBS special! hahahaha

Just said **** it and left my Mustang at his shop today because I wanted to pick my Cab up so bad. Car is running like it did the day I bought it. Shifter feels normal, all the gears work, and I even have some new ants taking residence within the body panels. Lol
Gabe looked at the transmission pieces and didn't really see any significant wear anywhere. He pointed out where Dennis told him the gears were all burnt up on the teeth of the planetary. Gabe scrubed a section a little and it was just oil.
Of all 25 something clutch discs, only two showed even slight signs of wear. Unlikely enough to cause slipping.
Gabe theorized the molded plastic piece that holds the shifter cable sleeve was sheared off from someone failing to disconnect the cable prior to dropping the transmission.
I theorize that ^ could have potentially happened when the engine was replaced after the IMSB failed.

WTF AND WTF?????
First, the first mechanic did a real number without doing a proper diagnosis. I can't believe he took apart that tranny like that.
Second, I didn't think you'd go through with the Kalashnikov pose request. Obviously you needed a couple beers at least and you're probably euphoric about getting your ride back in top running condition again.
Anywho, glad you got everything fixed.
P.S. Be prepared for those two shots to define you here on RL for eternity.
Congrats KK, I am glad you got this sorted out and car is running!
Props on the pictures. This thread is now definitely in the "legendary" status.
Now everyone who posted in this thread needs to do their own version of the picture too, with your own beer choice. I am reserving Warsteiner for myself.
I woke up this morning thinking, "it's Thursday, today is the season finale of KK and the Tranny!" Amazing! Great ending. Bravo and congratulations! Love the pics.
First and foremost, CONGRATULATIONS! I'm so glad to hear you didn't give up on this beautiful machine!
To everyone (including myself, because I'm NOT mechanically inclined like many on the 996 Rennlist forum) this is a lesson learned BIG time. That is, if I ever have a problem like this, I"m going to get a second and even a third opinion. I won't let some shady shop hold my car hostage and act like they know what they're doing only to charge me top dollar to completely destroy a very good, working transmission. Instead, contact local PCA clubs and ask for great mechanics that can properly and accurately diagnose the problem without replacing unnecessary parts at my expense.
And so my theory was right?... both transmissions were good and this was NOT a "Burned up" transmission and torque converter?
So our questions are:
1. Are you going to be meeting with Dennis in order to present the findings and hopefully recover some of the money he charged you?
2. Get a Lawyer and sue for the full amount if he refuses
3. Or, chalk it up as a "lesson learned" and move on with life and possibly resell the transmission in the future
4. Have someone reassemble the transmission and ship it to Kalash for more shirtless pictures?
Again, congrats to the best thread I've ever read on rennlist!!!
Congrats KK! Sorry to see you had to pay with the shirt off your back!
Glad it worked out. I don't know what I would do with those extra parts, maybe even recycle them as the cost to put them back together will not exceed the value most likely.
Put this behind you and just drive the car like you stole it!
The pictures are epic. Really setting a high bar here for the rest of us to keep up. I can't help but think that this is the difference between us and the 997 owners, lol. This will also not be the last time they are posted, for sure!
Enjoy the car!
Note that if you live in Greensboro, NC, you have to detail your car with Raid.
Congrats on getting back on the road.
I'm contacting the Mods because I definitely see nipples...

I've recently acquired another tranny...in case anyone needs it. Previous owner was having a fire-sale of sorts. So I got a smoking deal.

I am dead b3freak....I am crying from laughing at work. This is epic.
b3, postcard has so much win in it.... "Brokeback Porsche", " I know what you did to my Tranny"....
Is this the same Krazy K? He is local celebrity here in NC for his amazing commercials
Faster, Faster, February @ Kevin Powell's Foothill Ford & Kevin Powell MotorSports - YouTube
God no, I can't stand those stupid commercials. A while back I wanted to buy a jet ski. Krazy Kevin Powell changed my mind.
And omg these pictures are amazing hahaha
B3, parts sale pic is legit. You can probably catfish some news-outlet with it. "Shirtless marauders chop Porsche for parts in Paris and then set it on fire".
You should have seen me trying to explain to my girlfriend why I needed her to follow me outside to the garage to take a picture of me standing shirtless in my car at 11 o'clock at night for a bunch of guys on an Internet forum.
B3, can you photoshop JI into the Porsche burning picture? Make KK stick out of the burning roof with the bottle of beer? And make Groove lean on the burning car like he is leaning on his?
Title of that masterpiece will be "Rennlist Members in France"
Absolutely! The Photoshop doc is at the office. I'll cook it up in the morning after my staff meeting.
This was an Epic story huh?
I'll never forget it. I might even drive up to NC and thank KK for such a "Krazy" adventure, ha!
Lol! I tried to grow it out this winter. When my wife figured out what I was doing she told me my college days were over and to go get it cut. If I could find my ***** I woulda just told her no. But she hid them a couple years ago and won't tell me where.
Unless your original transmission is installed and tested, you don't know if it's OK or not. You can guess that your theory is right but that's all you can do.
I would go with option #3. To sue the other shop, you will have to hire an expert witness and even then, it's a he said she said situation where the only real proof is if the transmission get's re installed and tested. Even then, one can easily argue that the re assembly fixed the transmission. So better off jsut to mark it up as lesson learned and move on with your life.
"So better off just to mark it up as lesson learned and move on with your life."
Just don't forget to bad mouth that MF'er every chance you get and to anyone who will listen. Hopefully you'll save someone else the nightmare you lived...

Be careful of badmouthing anyone this way. It can come back and bite you in the *** if the owner of the shop decides to sue you for defamation of character. You need to have some solid evidence (same as if you go to court) to back up your badmouthing. If you make statements like......"I think..." or "My theory is..." you need solid proof, more than what the next shop told you (shops love putting each other down, it's good for business).
I say, walk away and enjoy your life.
And as long as everyone just walks away then this guy can continue to screw people at will. Bright lights cause rats to scurry. Someone needs to a shine the light on this guy.
Good point about being factual though. Consult a lawyer friend if you aren't sure of your wording.
That postcard almost makes this whole crapshoot worth it.
As far as legal actions, I'm doing nothing without careful advice from my lawyer. I will definitely be leaving negative reviews on the guy though. And I don't mean that he trashed my transmission, as I cannot prove that happened. What I will mention is the constant pushing of deadlines and shady practices.
finally found an indy who knew his stuff, problem fixed for much less. then the thread really goes sideways
Be warned, you may not want to/be able to leave the 996 forum now that you've had a taste of the shenanigans here in the 996 forum.
The sequel to the story will be named
"Dennis the Menace: the Tranny Apocalypse"
and Gabriel (a.k.a. Gabe) will be the archangel that saves all of humanity from the Tranny Menace
Maybe I should do a movie poster. hahahahaha
Only one letter away.
Actually just a little horizontal line on the bottom of the C.
As soon as someone pointed that out to me I knew the only way I could have one was if it was de-badged.
I never payed attention to Cayman's name, until it was pointed out here.
This makes for an interesting possibility when getting the title/registration as DMV uses contractions for the brand/model. So owning a Por Gay 2011 may not be in the books for me. Same as Por *** 1999.
It's KraZy-K down with some... "
Nice Nice Baby"!!
!!
Stop! Collaborate and listen
KrazyK is back with my brand new renndition
Something grabbed my tranny so tightly
Car went dead and I turned very whitey
So, it wouldn't go? No! But dis I know...
Got out, pushed, and it moved slow.
To the extreme Porsche stole my money like a vandal,
and now they want more money… KK flew off the handle.
Porsche, with baristas that boom
Killin' my brain like a poisonous mushroom
Deadly, when they play a diagnostic melody
They say "Anything less than Porsche’s best is a felony...
Love it or leave it, you better gain way…
Get outta my face and have a nice day!"
Service manager is like... Be nice nice Baby... Nice nice Baby!
(Now, I’m takin’ it to my tranny prophet named Dennis)
Several weeks go by, phone is silent,
Car is held hostage, I’m starting to get violent!
Quick to the point, to the point, no fakin',
He says, “tranny is toast and so bring me more bacon.”
Kalash was quick and nimble,
his tranny was a bargain plain and simple.
Cut into a funky dance with a souped up tempo,
I'm on a roll, time to go solo!
Still, they're working' on my 3.6.
Why can't Dennis find the right fix?
My Stang is on standby, that’s where I get my high
Did you ever stop? No! I admit, I like stang-high!
Picked up my baby and paid the man,
Made it five miles, damn, not again!???
Girlfriend was like "Yo, do you wanna sue?!!"
and I say... "Lawyer says NO cause I’m young and own two!"
I said, "Hunni... Be nice nice Baby, nice nice Baby!"
Take heed, 'cause KK is a lyrical poet
PCA Gabe is at the scene just in case you didn't know it
Rennlist, that created all the bearing fuss
Hurry up lil' boy or you'll miss the bus!
Resident experts say IMS failure is real,
replace with LN or you'll swallow a major pill!
Engine in da back, what a hell of a concept
Dr. P sold the hype, you want to step in this?
Butzi, his life will never fade,
sliced like a Ginsu, sharper than any razor blade!
So fast, others say, "Shazam!!!"
If Porsche was a drug, they'd sell it by the gram
Phone begins to ring, keeping my composure,
$3000 loss hurts worse nuclear exposure
(Gabe is like, “Son, it was only a $300 part”)
Hell boyz, there are worse things in the world and so let's get loose!
Magnetized by Porsche’s power when I give it sum juice!
It's nice nice baby!!! It's so nice nice baby!!!!

Alright seriously, next time you need to make a video of yourself with the new rap lyrics. I'm sort of getting tired of your crappy gifs and pics you're always posting. lol,
Take it to the next level
Ha! Check out the karaoke scene in the movie, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and then you'll understand why I don't post any music videos of myself.
hahaha!
Btw, I thought the rap was a nice change. Cheers!
That was my plan too DTM. I am flying AA, and not united....so I can't access the Unite Club lounges at the airport. ATL has THE CLUB AT ATL lounge, but it is in the international terminal. I will try to sneak my way to it if possible, it opens at 6 a.m.
Also, be sure to bang on the cockpit door and tell the pilots to do burn-outs on the runway. They like to see that passengers appreciate their piloting skills.
P.S.: Just did a search on your flight and found this:
Hey Kalash,
Aside from getting blasted, there is plenty to do in Atlanta. Have you heard of the Porsche experience? bwhahaha just kidding.
Seriously, it all depends on how much time you have, money you're willing to spend, and where you're willing to drive. Lots of classic places to visit - during the day, you must check out the legendary Varsity restaurant near Ga Tech. It's greasy good! If you like concerts, Lynyrd Skynyrd is playing June 18th at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta, GA. If you like bizarre comedy, then check out Weird Al Yankovic on Sunday the 19th at the Fox theater.
Of course, if you want easy, then check out the Coca Cola museum and Ga Aquarium. They're right next to each other.
Lots of places to eat in Atlanta and if you have "fine-heeled" taste, then I recommend Buckhead. That's where all the Ferraris, Porsches, and Maseratis hang out. But if you want easy food and places to shop downtown, I suggest the "Atlantic Station" - get off at 17th street.
If bar hoppin' is your thing, then I recommend making the drive to Athens - the home of the Bulldogs and REM. You must try the Last Resort restaurant and the 40 Watt club. Bands play many clubs downtown and there is never a dull moment. The most popular place is probably the Georgia Theater -
http://www.georgiatheatre.com/
That's just a short list.
Outstanding. Not my style, but you have some serious talent. I would advise setting it to a 'melody' but of course, as rap that's sorta like saying adding pickle juice to a banana.
Go visit the original Chick-fil-a, right near the airport and right across the street from Porsche:
http://www.cfarestaurant.com/hapevilledwarfhouse/home
They're a pretty Christian bunch, though, so I think you'll need to bring your own vodka. At least they sell mixers.
Hey Doc, I don't think they want to hear me sing a rap. hahahaha
But thanks for the nice comment. It was the result of being bored at lunch time. hahaha Guess you can tell I'm a big 80's/90's guy.
That's a good challenge:
I'm not good on dates, but I'll throw a wild guess...
Chevy van, 2 Caddys, Continental, Mustang, Galaxie, and Schnell's daily driver? hahaha
Am I even close?
Sorry Doc. I was going to point out to you that B3's poem was actually based on the song "Ice, Ice Baby" by white rapper Vanilla Ice. Ice, coincidentally covered (or "sampled") David Bowie''s classic "Under Pressure" for that song.
So you see, it already has a melody, of sorts. A quite catchy one actually.
Dude, you should go to the "I love the 90's" concert. It has all your fav's.
Been thinking about it myself but since I live in Chicago, most likely I'll get shot going, even with a bullet proof vest. lol
http://www.ticketmaster.com/i-love-t...005034CFF47543
Ok, I do see -- now. It maybe would be indicative that since I advised he set it to melody, that I wasn't familiar with the song, artist, or the source?
However I do know Bowie's Under Pressure quite well.
B3 you should do some more photoshop work; you got 5 characters to play with here. I think movie poster idea is a good one. Mad Max, Fast and Furious, Gone in 60 seconds, Bloodsport, Commando, The A team, X-Men are all good candidates. You need to import JI in some form, he will create awesome contrast in each poster. I got two of his pictures for you to play with.

Yo KrazyK,
What did you do with the old transmission now that your car is up and running? Did you approach Dennis the Menace about refunding some of your money given the fact that the original problem was not the tranny?
I should have known better than to look at RL while bored in a meeting. Almost spewed coffee out my nose. Everyone looked at me and I played it off like the coffee went down the wrong pipe. I think most of them bought it. Awesome work!
Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been around in a while. Just been busy with work and what not. The 996 has been a champ ever since getting everything fixed.
Finally was able to make it to a PCA event and man that was a blast. We drove the **** out of the cars on some fun curvy roads.
As for the legal stuff, we've decided it would be too difficult to go after the dealer and that going after Dennis would be the better option. The next step is sending a letter if demand.
At this point in time, I couldn't be happier with the car. Unless it was a turbo or something haha.
It's good to hear from you KK and glad you're finally enjoying your 996. We understand the concerns for keeping things hush-hush in legal situations, but if you could keep us updated on the progress, that would be great. Did you ever spend the money have the original transmission reassembled?
Alright everyone, time for the anticlimactic ending to Dennisgate. He lawyered up. My lawyer explained to me all about the process of taking him to courts and explained all the potential issues. If I took him to court I'd need the mechanic who ended up fixing the car to testify, and even if I won, I'd then have to go about collecting damages. Which is not remotely as simple as one would think. Then theres the possibility I could lose and owe him money. I work all the time and just don't have the time or energy to go after him in court. The whole situation was just a big ****fest but at least its over and I can chalk it up to another lesson learned.
I think you have chosen wisely. The possible gain is not worth the hassle in this situation, IMHO.
EDIT: Almost forgot the most important part to any post in this epic thread:
Oh man! I remember reading through all 35 pages of this thread. All quiet for a month then see it's on the front page again. I thought KK had blown up another tranny! Nooooooooo!
KK and a trip with two Trannies. hahaah
Yea, I felt bad for the fella. Paid almost 30 grand for the cab from Porsche dealership only to experience catastrophic failure not just one, but two transmissions. Yikes! Now the poor '03 cab is probably still sitting idle in his rented garage. Wonder if he'll sell as is or try to repair it. My guess is he'd rather move on with life and rid himself of this horrible nightmare of a car purchase. It's a shame plain and simple.
Hey guys! Sorry I'm just now getting around to replying. I'm happy to say I've been getting plenty of use out of the 996 lately!
It's perfect for storing my new kayak when not in use!
Yo Krazy K!
Good to see you still have plenty of toys to play with in light of the whole tranny fiasco. Can't hide money huh? haha
Seriously, what are your plans with the Carrera Cab? You going to sell it off as-is or restore it?
Well, you may want to take a wise step back and look at all of your options before dumping tons of addition cash into this car. Currently, the 996 cabriolets have been depreciating pretty fast. Mine sold for $20,000 and was almost identical to your cab with the exception of the tranny. But I've seen many for well under $20K.
I wonder what the cost for a used transmission and installation would cost you? $7K $10K or more??? That would be the first thing I'd look at.
It seems your car looks to be in good condition overall, but in a "roller" state, the car may not grab much more than $10,000. Maybe less if the IMS has not been changed out.
Much to think about. But hate to see you dump more money into this Porsche-pit.
Sorry to say, but $10K for a roller is reaching from what I've seen. Save up for a good used tranny and dump it if you really feel that way. But full disclosure for the next guy!
It's a 2002 996 Carrera Cabriolet with TipTronic. It has around 55 to 60k miles. The engine was replaced at some point because the IMSB failed before I owned the car and was fixed under warranty.
Yea, I feel ya KK. But you may want to try and list it in it's current condition... describing in detail, the problem at hand. The value is in the motor. Even if you have the transmission fixed, it probably won't be a return on investment. Now, on the other hand, if you want to restore the car for yourself, then that's a different ballgame. Have you tired contacting Stonegate in Cleveland GA? He'll give you a good price. He get's Jake Raby to repair and service his cars before reselling them. You may get close to you price.
http://stonegateautosales.com
By the way, how's the Mustang running?
Oh I've accepted there will be no return on investment. I knew that going in. Mustang is a champ! Actually just put a roof rack on it to move the kayak around. Looks pretty interesting. Lol
Mustang with a roof rack. And you live in the south??? hahahaha
I gotta see this... Please post a picture when you have time. You may be the only dude with the ***** to put a boat rack on top of a new Mustang. Actually, on second thought, that just might be best "redneck thang" I've heard of in quite a while. ha!
Now, I've seen everything! hahahaha KK, you really know how to deliver a good laugh man! How do you manage to get all these toys with having a girlfriend?
I'd post it for 10K as a roller. I've seen cars with salvaged titles crashed on Copart routinely hit close to 10K.
If you have proof it is a remanufactured motor, I think 10K as a roller should be doable. Motors are selling for between 6-10K used. I know DC Dismantlers recently made an offer of $7K for a car that had been hit VERY hard in the front.
Maybe this was already covered (im at work and didnt have time to read ALL 37 PAGES!!) but a car going through 2 trannies in so little mileage, there's gotta be a problem with the car causing the problem??
I wonder if Rennlist should not pay money to the owners of the most entertaining threads! At least then you get something out of it. It is totally weird that you continue to have these issues, and in the meantime your money goes down the drain. Only "good" thing is you are now saving on insurance. Just saw another story where the tip was replaced by a manual gearbox? Maybe that would be your ultimate solution if you didn't sell the car in the meantime as a roller.
It would be worthwhile in the meantime if you'd set the car up for a long time storage (fill fuel tank, fresh oil, pump those tires to 4 bar etc).
I'm bacckkkkkk! Hey guys and welcome to part 3 of this endless saga of desperation. It's been about a year or more since I pushed my 996 into my second garage and shut the door so I wouldn't have to think about it. Fast forward to today and the misses and I are buying a house. We're building my 3-car dream garage but I'd prefer to not have a dead 996 sitting in it. With that said, it's finally time to get something done. At this point I have about 4 scenarios that could play out. I called up Gabe today (the mechanic who fixed Dennis the Menace's blunderings) and went over the options. First scenario, we talked about the idea of selling the car as a roller and that it would probably fetch a decent price since its a roller with a bad trans and good engine rather than a roller with a dead engine. He reckons I could get $13xxx for it. Everything is in great shape sans the trans. However, based on what I told him my most recent mechanic, the savant said, he's not convinced that the trans is the issue. Enter second and third scenarios. He believes it could potentially be a computer/controller issue. If thats the case, it would be a potentially inexpensive fix and I could either sell the car for KBB or keep it and drive it like I originally intended. The last scenario, the trans is toast. I could search around for a third transmission and have it installed and sell the car.
With all that said, I'm going to eventually have the car towed out to Gabe's shop so he can give it a look over. I may try and have this done in December, or perhaps after the New Year. With that said, if anybody who has the means to dismantle and part the car out is interested, hit me up. The engine is obviously the most valuable part of the car and has less miles on it than the car does as this car was an IMSB failure that had the engine replaced by Porsche under warranty. The engine was replaced with a NEW engine at 22,400 miles. The car has 60,535 miles on it now, so the engine only has 38,135 miles on it. The body and everything else is in good condition.
Sup KK!!! Glad to hear things are potentially on the positive. I hope you get it back running again. That would great ending to this nightmare of a story. It probably ranks in the top 10 of Rennlist Epic stories. But keep your head up... at least you have some kind of 996 in your garage, that's more than I have at the moment. Not sure if you heard, but I needed to sell mine to round up some cash to replace my wife's Volvo SUV that was ALSO having transmission issues. It wasn't a seriously diseased tranny (like yours), but I didn't want to flush money into it since it was more than 10 years old and had high miles. I sold it to a friend and combined the money from my Porsche and the Volvo to buy her a Tahoe. But I must admit, I really miss the 996. It was great therapy to drive it up to the North GA mountains just by myself. I'm not sure when I'll be back in another 996, but life has other priorities at the moment and so I just have to wait it out. Waiting is a hard pill to swallow. I'm know you understand. I wish had more options.
If you don't mind me asking, what happened after this? The thread posts don't explain what happened to the 2nd Tip. So the shifter linkage problem did not solve the issue or the 2nd trans was already damaged before the last shop fixed the linkage? Just when I thought the Tip might be a viable option, I read this fiasco. Doesn't say much for the Tip does it? Sorry to read about yours.
If your into diesels, check out the thread. I built it from a bare block up, .030 over, RCD cam, ARP studs, all new everything, etc. Runs perfect and has for awhile.
Anyway, just asking about the Tip story and failure, not making any judgments on it.
Sorry to hear that man. I gotta admit, I got into the car yesterday for the first time in over a year to check the mileage and man did it feel good. I miss driving it so much.
I had posted an entire thread called "It happened again!" Basically I was leaving work one night, pulled up to the road out of my parking lot and when I went to pull out the car just started rolling back. Engine just revved. As if it was in neutral. No forward or reverse gears. Apparently this car is an anomaly, the tip is normally bulletproof according to everything else I've read.
I cranked it up a couple days ago on the 21st. Engine sounds as good as ever. Battery is dead and naturally the car is parked with the driver side almost flush against my garage. I had to crawl in through like 4 inches of space and open the passegenr door and then had to jump the car on the fuse in the foot well just to get the frunk open to actually jump it. There was no way to get around to the hood with cables.
Im holding on to hope that my previous mechanic wasnt very thorough and that it still may be a controller/comp issue. Thatll be the difference between me selling this thing for 10 vs 18k.
I know this may sound dumb but you really didn't know the true health or history of either transmission which makes it very hard to pin down the problem(s). Wonder what the PO could tell you about the car since it failed in 2 weeks after purchase from dealer? I suppose its possible two worn/used transmissions could fail in similar ways. Your really in a jam without having a known good trans that passed all testing prior to being installed in your car. If there are no physically broken parts, I also see no reason both of your trans cant be rebuilt though I would hate to be the guy to tackle the box of parts from the first one.
I'm no trans expert, but have rebuilt manuals and autos before. The only time I saw something weird like this was when I rebuilt the same trans over and over, meaning complete disassemble then reassemble about 3 times with the same result, there was a phantom crack in the case. I don't see how this would be possible with your two but I remember that the one I had almost drove me nuts because of the crack. Maybe contact some really sharp Tip tech and get an opinion or idea. Surely the last shop ran diagnostics before they let you have the car back?
If your sure your trans problem is not an electrical, connection, program issue DME-CM, TIP-CM, heat, or a fluid contamination issue, the only way forward is with a known reman or new one. I think if I were you, I would bite the bullet and buy a reman with a warranty even if I had to charge it to a credit card temporarily just to get your car road worthy. Now if the 3rd one fails, at least it has a warranty and proves your car is indeed cursed.
Maybe someone with better IT knowledge than I can answer this question.
If KK’s account remains on home computer and is used exclusively there..
kk’s “NC” account is signed on via smartphone and never posts when connected to house wifi.
Then the IP addresses will never match up?
Correct, but there are databases of IPs that let you map them pretty close to your house (about 100' radius or so for mobile IPs) if you pay enough (the cheap/free ones will get you to the city/county level). Of course you then have to consider VPNs, Proxies, and NATs which will further complicate things. So while some would like to believe that an IP uniquely identifies someone (or that different IPs mean it isn't the same person), that's not remotely true.
Please note that I'm only yanking kk's chain. There is no doubt in my mind about him possibly being KK.
Jeff,
Your ability to land a 150mph moving jet on a 4 acre sized moving and tossing ship for decades deserves much respect. Still gotta figure out if you are just a wee bit on the crazy side when you do that **** at night during storms..
Good news everybody! I have a buyer for the roller! He is well aware of the transmission issue. Hes interested in th body and engine, both of which are in good shape. With that said, how do I go about protecting myself from this car? Will a normal As-Is Bill of Sale suffice? Do I need to make a statement disclosing in writing the issues with the car and have him sign it?
Full disclosure is always the best policy. I would make sure (in addition to noting the car being sold as-is, where is) the bill of sale clearly notes that the car is inoperable with transmission issues. I don't think you need to explain the whole fiasco of the story, but it's always good common practice to explain it in person and then back it up on paper.
Again, I hate that you've had such a horrible *first* experience with the 911. I hope you'll consider getting another one in the future. I wouldn't throw in the towel so soon, but I understand if you don't want to repeat history on this type of car. Personally, I think the Porsche dealership should have handled the issue, but that's my two cents worth. At least you can cleanse yourself of this horrible nightmare of a car and move on with life.
All the best!
Sold the car this afternoon for $10,000. I can say without a doubt I will never own another 996 again in my life. With that said, it was absolutely the most fun I have ever had with a car. The one PCA drive I was able to attend was a blast and I loved the looks I got daily while driving it. Cranking it up and listening to it rev while the buyer was checking it out was bittersweet. Like a said, this will be my last 996 but very likely not my last Porsche. Maybe a year or so after our new house is built, I'll be looking at a new car. Perhaps a new Cayman S or a certified pre owned 911 with a warranty.
Huge thanks to every body for all their help with this car, be it transmissions from Kalash or just advice. Love this forum and I'll still check in from time to time. Tonight, I shall get belligerently drunk!
Hey guys! I figured yall would be interested to hear about whats going on with the car. The buyer sent me these pictures last night. He tore down the transmission and said the oil pump inside the transmission had gone bad. Car is currently running. That doesnt do much to explain the two transmission failures but Im glad hes got it running!

Hey KK!!! Thank you for the update. Are those recent pictures? WOW!... this guy has it opened up for sure. Talk about open heart surgery here! Hopefully he'll get it back together correctly and be able to diagnose why the problem occurred.
Not trying to reopen ol' wombs, but any chance you could give us a breakdown (no pun intended) to the amount of money you dumped into this car from the start? Seems like I remember you saying you paid almost $30,000 from a Porsche dealership and then the nightmare began.
IMHO, "Dennis the Menace" is to point why this current transmission has problems cause he installed it. Seems like the second guy just repaired the shifter issue and so I wouldn't make him a part of the equation... but it seems the oil pump problem could have been from Dennis' botched install? Thoughts? Wonder if the current mechanic is willing to give his opinion on what caused this problem?
it has calmed down quite a lot since the fake war hero got indicted in nigeria and the mods cleared it up ........sorry for the rough treatment they first gave you .....welcome here
Whats up guys! Its been a hot minute since Ive checked in here. Been super busy (new job, buying house, etc). Thought Id stop in for a minute. As far as the 996 goes, to my knowledge is still up and running in NY/NJ. Unfortunately Im still Porscheless, but ended up selling my Mustang GT for something a little more practical. Hope everybody is doing well!

Im back! Told you that 996 wouldnt be my last Porsche. Ive had a ZL1 and a Z06 since selling my 996 and Mustang and the one car I couldnt get out of my head was the Porsche. I was looking at some 997s since they are now priced pretty close to what my 996 was, but ultimately I didnt want to ever deal with the possibility of any IMSB failures again so I knew I needed an 09 at least. 911s start getting pricey after 09 so I started looking at Caymans and Boxsters too. The plan was to get a 6 speed this time, but then I found this beautiful Boxster S PDK with Sport Chrono. The best part, Porsche CPO! 2 year warranty? Score! So excited to be back!
I've been reading that PDKs have an abnormally high failure rate. Something about an internal.pump?
Just kidding
That a beautiful car, congrats, you deserved it.
