He had to file down some parts of the housing for the head unit, and he used a piece of plywood to mount the amplifier.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I wanted Sirius, Spotify, and hands free phone calls. At first it was just going to be a Continental head unit. But in the end I decided to give my 996 some of the modern conveniences of my daily driver Lexus GS350. So for anyone who is considering doing the same, the results I got are really satisfying. This 23 year-old dream car now feels somewhat reborn!
I didnt want a sub woofer box taking up space, but I hoped that I could find 4 speakers with enough punch, and 5 1/4 speakers with enough bass to give me a well-rounded sound system without paying someone more than $2,000 to get me there. And I did.
With supply chain issues making choices limited, and me being impulsive about getting this done now, over the holidays, when I had the time off work to get it done, here is what I went with
Pioneer Double DIN - chose it over Alpine because my stereo guy told me he and his techs have been more impressed with the Pioneer display quality. Decided against the Sony with the volume **** because the Sony had some negative published reviews and again, the display quality. Cost was around $450.
Alpine 4 Channel Amp - Ive always trusted Alpine, and this surprisingly low cost amp ($225) had excellent reviews and a small enough footprint to fit where the CD changer has been.
Kicker 5 1/4 Component Speakers - in the doors, with the tweeters mounted inside the dashboard speaker housings. Didnt break the bank with these for $225, and they were highly rated.
Two sets of JL Audio C1-400 4 speakers in the dash and in the back. JL was my go to speaker for my last two aftermarket upgrades, but they can be fairly expensive. I was surprised to find these highly rated, lower cost C series for $99 a pair.
The result is a surprisingly strong sound system. The mids and the highs are warm, complex, and bright. The bass is very capable, albeit without the thunder of a sub woofer. Listening to Exile on Main Street and Physical Graffiti last night, I heard parts of the music I had never noticed in 40 years. Thats saying something.
Im really impressed with the display on the Pioneer, the ease of use, and how quickly I was able to adjust to there not being a volume ****. The Up and Down touchscreen positions are just to the right of the rear wiper ****. So I can feel my way to them without looking away from the road.
I hope this helps others who are thinking about doing the same!
Awesome work and kudos for trying something new / different. I'd be also interested in how you mounted the speakers. I know many factory speakers have a fairly small magnet out back and fitting bulkier aftermarket speakers can be a challenge. Did you have to modify anything? Were you able to use all existing cabling?
thanks Pete. I didnt do the installation. I dont have those skills. I went to a well known independent car stereo shop in Santa Monica CA. He didnt have to modify the housings to any large degree. He had to file down some parts of the housing for the head unit, and he used a piece of plywood to mount the amplifier. They pulled new speaker wire.
I have to stop by his shop today because he left a flashlight in my frunk. When I see him Ill ask for more details.
Let me know what you get.
for me its strange how I simply dont listen to any of my 400 CDs anymore. But the reality is that between Spotify, Sirius, and an app called Attics that has every Grateful Dead show ever recorded, the iPhone is the answer to it all. Even Waze which I use on my iPhone rather than the Navi in my Lexus. Smartphones have made so many things obsolete or simply impractical.
Apple Car Play is a great feature many of these newer head units have. I’ve got an older Pioneer very similar to your head unit. It does rejuvenate your 20 year old car. The screen is a touch screen, but you also have the ability to use a small remote control to change functions.
These head units become an extension of your iPhone. You get all the features of your phone in your car. I am able to play Sirius/XM without having a separate subscription for my 996. Siri voice commands enabled, and for navigation you can use Apple Maps or any navigation app you got from the App Store.
I don’t think Car Play works with Android Phones. The android equivalent is Android Auto.
You split one of the outputs to four instead of just two speakers. In a space as small as a Porsche there is still no way Ill ever need more amp output than Ive now got. But Im an older guy, and I try not to listen to loud music as much as I used to. My tinnitus is already bad enough!
Car Play is such a great innovation. As I mentioned earlier the ability to see my iPhones screen for WAZE, Spotify, and Sirius has transformed the car.
Very clean!
Though PCCM+ is still better / classier looking - and I
hate
that they just punched a cable through the cubby. The entire cabin should have 0 loose cables IMO.
Out of curiosity what did this run you all in (all parts + labor)? I have PCCM+ with the stock non-Bose amp, and the sound is truly terrible. Not sure if its worth upgrading because I don't listen to music all that much.
Im interested in how PCCM+ would have been better than this. How much would that thing have cost with a decent amplifier? Would that thing do WAZE, Spotify, Sirius, or any other new innovations that IOS provides in the coming years?
All in, with professional installation is was just under $2,000. Ill sell the Porsche amp and CD changer if anyone will buy them. And the dual cup holder module seeks to be with a decent amount on eBay. So in the end maybe it ends up costing $1700-$1800.
PCCM+ by itself was $1325.00, then I bought a $100 wireless CarPlay adapter so there are 0 cables to deal with (all tucked away in the glovebox).
Yes PCCM+ is CarPlay with the OEM Porsche look.
That's a pretty good deal for $2K!
I just wish Porsche would quit pandering to the Apple crowd, yeah it's almost 50/50 market split, but I'm not drinking the cool aid just to have a phone that works with the new Porsche's.
I guess Santa is going to get you a Patagonia vest since thats your go to dig
Also Apple has a Christmas deal so you can get rid of your dial up to fit your new vest
LOL
Thats more than three times as expensive as the Alpine of the Pioneer Apple Play-ready receivers I narrowed it down to. So yeah, $2k all in makes even more sense now than it already did.
Wish granted. The new 2022 Porsche's are supporting Android Auto alongside appel's car play.

The PCCM+ also supports Android Auto per the specs, I don't have one ... yet. (I'd love to see some reviews of the PCCM+ Android support)
It seems like those tabs (JLA C1-400) are made to be broken off? Then you've got to get them onto the Porsche grills. Did he just butt them up to grill and glue them down?
