I understand the need for locking cams respectively, when replacing the other tensioners, so my remaining question is for the IMS chain.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, on a 5-chain engine, what needs to be locked in order to safely replace the IMS chain tensioner? I understand the need for locking cams respectively, when replacing the other tensioners, so my remaining question is for the IMS chain.

POST 2Original post

The engine must be locked at TDC, camshaft(s) locked. I have a 3 chain, so I only locked bank 1 camshaft.

POST 3Original post

Tdc and lock one cam. Its a safety thing to make sure nothing slips or rotates.

POST 4Original post

On a five chain engine I wouldn't worry about locking cams if only doing the IMS chain tensioner. Don't see how they could move with both of their tensioners installed. But do whatever you think is safe. Lock the crank.

POST 5Original post

I researched this before changing the tensioners on my 5-chain. Just locking the crank in TDC....done by putting a 8mm (If I remember correctly) drill bit in the pulley.

POST 6Original post

I did the same on my 5-chain motor.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, its my first time working on an M96. Ill lock the crank first, then do the IMS chain tensioner while having one of the cams locked. Im doing the other tensioners as well. i think I got it all figured out now 😊

POST 8Original post

Aren't dual-row IMSB M96 motors 6 chains? Do single row motors only have one connecting chain to the crank? Interesting.

POST 10Original post

5 chain engines can have a single or dual row IMSB. The 3 chain engines all had single row, with the changeover to a larger single row in 2005-6. They both have one chain connecting the crank to the IMS.
