If you want to replace the amp you can take both out but it's easier just to leave them in.

They seem smoother than the angular GT3 set on the 996.2's with Aero.

I own a set of 235 35 19 Vredestein winters from my VW Golf and I will use 2 of those for the front.

I decided to use these as my winter set and to use the original wheels which I've sourced as my regular set.

I do prefer the look of the CDR-220, however the Waze, voice text and Spotify on a screen is in my view much safer than using a phone for these functions.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello friends,
Just traded my old 2010 car for an '02 NB 996. I am very excited to learn more about these cars.
I do have some questions that I thought y'all could help answer.
1) there is a K40 or similar radar detector hard wired (maybe a jammer too?) I don't know where the "brain" is and don't know how to turn it off or make the volume lower. Any ideas? Photo attached of the interface which is just 3 LEDs in formerly blank switches in the dash. .
2) The vehicle came with aftermarket wheels which are nice looking, but are not for me. I decided to use these as my winter set and to use the original wheels which I've sourced as my regular set. The current wheels are 19" Cup 4 from Tire Rack. I own a set of 235 35 19 Vredestein winters from my VW Golf and I will use 2 of those for the front. The rear wheel is a too wide 19x11 and I cant seem to find a tire to fit. Any recommendations? can I mix the Vredstein fronts with whatever I put in back? they don't make a wide enough tire.
3) I am having a PCM classic added for Android Auto/Carplay because that is very important for me for safety. I do prefer the look of the CDR-220, however the Waze, voice text and Spotify on a screen is in my view much safer than using a phone for these functions. Anything to know before the install?
4) I have the HIFI sound which I believe adds door speakers but no Bose. The sound is a bit tinny, any speaker recommendations maybe for the door speakers?
5) The car has a side skirt that I believe is aftermarket, can somebody let me know if that's true or if it is a Porsche part retrofitted?
Thanks all! Really looking forward to enjoying this best kept secret value!
Congrats! Looks like a really sharp Targa.
1) People often hide the control unit in the ash tray on the center shift tunnel console, sometimes underneath the steering wheel dash trim somewhere but I think that may be more of a Mk1 thing since it had the owners manual tray down there which was removed for Mk2. Check out those places!
2) Wheel gurus will chime in that know more than me about tire options.
3)

4) Not a sound guy - will let others chime in on this as well.
5) Looks to be the OEM Aero II style side skirt but doubtful they are authentic unless you see an option for it under your frunk on the option sticker.
Cheers!
1. I have seen volume dials just under dash below the steering wheel. Its gonna depend on the installer. Start popping trim pieces and follow the wires.
2. those wheels look like 19" sport technos. I would sell them snd put 18" rims on for the street and buy 17" for snows. It will ride much better.
4. Factory stereo, amp and speakers r garbage. Throw it all out and start fresh
5. Sides look like mk2 repros. Look for a 996,xxx.xxx.xx part number. Cant remenber where to look.
I think the side skirts and wheels are actually very well tied together. Previous owner did it tastefully and its well packaged. Congrats on the car- welcome to the club
I feel the same way you do about having the navigation, etc in my view. I put a Pioneer with Apple CarPlay in about a year & a half ago. There are lots of tutorials on how to do it, both here and on YouTube. As long as you don't have the fiber optic system (can't remember the name) it's not too bad. If you have it, you'll need to tear everything out. My system has the amp and the DSP. I left those in along with the factory speakers. If you want to replace the amp you can take both out but it's easier just to leave them in. You need to leave the DSP in if you have it and want to keep the amp. It will no longer work so you can stuff it behind the stereo somewhere. I hit a button on my DSP that turned it back on (I think) & that caused an echo when using speakerphone & siri so be on the lookout for that. Another oddity with the DSP and maybe the hifi system is that the door speakers act more as woofers and not real speakers.
Thanks!
Yes, it is such a great safety feature, even in my 993 I had a Sony double din (single din rear was able to fit)!
Now that Porsche makes one, I must try it!
Found the volume and on off, there are also 2 settings which I have no idea about. Any idea what type of system used these lights? the orange light can be switched to green FWIW.
I wonder, either way I like them!
I actually kind of like the wheels enough to keep them until I can buy good 18 tires for the oem wheels. These are wide body wheels and shouldnt really be on this car though.
Does anybody know if that puts any undue pressure on suspension components?
RalphieJ congrats on the car the side look great I have a few sets of wheels that I’ve played with on my 99 Aero I’m also in Staten Island lmk I’m in the process of pairing down to 3 sets from the 6 I have all with newish tires pm maybe we can work out a trade
Don't mix tires. Even for snow. 19" rims mean less tire height and more chances of rim damage. Your roads will punish those wheels to the point that they either crack or bend, particularly in the winter.
As said before, 17" would be a good choice for winter and 18" for summer.
Note, that radar jammers are simply illegal by Federal law (
FCC rules & regulations
). While the odds of getting caught may not be high, it's not something you want to risk.
