Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I copied the ad for all the info I have. Price seems fair to me. costs to make right? Thoughts? 2003 911 Carrera 4 Cab , 6 speed. $15000. Drives great. Tight clutch. White exterior / Black top / Mustard (rare) interior. IMS not replaced but at these miles not an issue. New DIY brakes but no sensor insert so light on. Occaissional O2 light after sits for a while. Speakers weak. Gap in top suppose guide wire needs front reattachment. Top mechanism must have fluid leak... refill then works great and then slows down over time. Good condition wind screen. New tires... Sumitomo 225/40ZR18 92Y XL(2) 285/30ZR18 97Y XL(2). All that really matters works great so priced accordingly.

To DIY the top repairs you're looking at ~ $500 to send the cylinders off to Cabriolet Hydraulics in Sarasota, FL for a rebuild. There are instructions on how to R&R them on their website if you're interested in looking before you pull the trigger. Figure double that or slightly more if you want to pay someone to do it. The guide wire repair is a DIY one and there are threads on here how to do it. It is a winter project I will tackle but have not yet (I have one loose one, one tight one) so I can't give you much insight on how it goes but it isn't a big cost factor. No need to worry about the cost of having your top re-calibrated if as owners says it works correctly on a fully charge of oil and then just leaks out. You can install the brake sensors any time you want or jumper the wiring out to eliminate the light. Pretty lazy of the owner not to do one or the other.

Ims needs to be done. You got a Gen2 not a Gen1. But before you decide on anything, get the bores scoped. If you have borescoring, you got a 20-35k engine rebuild depending on what you want. Not to mention get a PPI at a good Porsche Indy. Service records will be helpful. Because you don't have any other info on what has been serviced, you have to assume everything needs to be serviced unless proven otherwise. Figure in 10k unless you will do the work yourself and factor in 5k. If you are doing the Ims, which you should, then you should do the Rms as well as look at the clutch and flywheel. While doing this you should replace the AOS with the UAOS. New fuel injectors, ignition coils and spark plugs. New MAF and possibly new OXY sensors. New water pump and water reservoir. Plenty more to do if suspension is shot, convertible top needs to be fixed, etc. This will add additional cost. Tough to tell you if 15k is a good price with the info provided.

POST 4Original post

What are the miles? Gonna have scoped for bore scoring? IMS also suspect (against what they're saying) as it's not the more robust dual row.

POST 5Original post

IF it's truly just a guide wire cable end that needs to be replaced to fix the gap in the top, it's an easy fix. $20 in parts, maybe, with an easy DIY . Probably $100 if you had an indy do it for you.

POST 6Original post

Im seeing a few red flags on issues that owner has not addressed. The question you must ask yourself is this: what other issues has the owner decided not to attend to? There might be several unknown unknowns. You already have a few known unknowns. This is why the car is so cheaply priced. Expect some expensive repairs, but do the bore scope to identify at least one of the most expensive. And see if you can check cam deviations as well. If all else checks out, and you like to DIY, the car could be worth it. I did my own brakes on my 996 this year. Super easy. I also replaced the hydraulic rams on my car that were leaking with a rebuild service already mentioned. However, the top cable adjustments are doable, but depends on the cable. If were talking about the cables that run from the back and slide inside of the grooves inside of the windows, I dont think those are adjustable. Those often require as much labor as it takes to install a new top ($1000 Chicago non-dealer labor cost). A replacement (non-factory) top with a plastic window is around $1k. Glass tops are $2k. These prices are pre-COVID, so it might be more now. EDIT: seller says that whats important works. Maybe there are 14 things wrong with this car that the seller doesnt think matters. What Ive learned buying used cars is to test every feature and function. Something as simple as a rear window that sticks could still be $2500 to fix (at a dealer).

Went to see it this morning and it had a laundry list of issues. Thanks for the info guys

POST 8Original post

Good to see you are using logic and not emotion. And $15k sounds too low anyway.
