Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys been enjoying my new to me 02 996 for the past 2 weeks or so. It's been great so far besides a few quirks here and there, but a new noise popped up last week. Read a lot about borescoring concerns and how sometimes a bad cat causes knocking noises as well. Not too mechanically inclined so planning on bringing it into the shop in a few days but wanted some preliminary thoughts Here's a few videos that showcase the sounds for a cold start, cold idle, and warm idle. Cold Start Cold Idle Warm Idle No smoke coming out from the exhaust on a cold start. I believe the whine on start up is a bad idler pulley. Let me know what you guys think! Happy to finally join the community with my own Porsche regardless of its current or future issues lol

POST 2Original post

That warm idle. I'll let the wizards weigh in, but that is quite distinct.

POST 3Original post

I have a thread about hot engine and tick. A little gas the tick goes away. Engine cools down, tick goes away. I added oil so it went from mid way on stick, to 3/4 of way. No more tick. Something to try maybe.

POST 4Original post

The whine on startup is your secondary air pump and is normal. The knock sounds worrisome. IMO not just the normal warm idle tick. Id get a pro to look at it asap.

POST 5Original post

Seconding Sublm8. Secondary air pump whine is normal on cold start. Ticking noise on warm engine is not normal.

POST 6Original post

Well, knowing engines in general, that exactly sounds like a lifter. But on our 996 the common lifter type noise is 9 out of 10 times piston slap. And yours sounds like advanced slap. Disclaimer_: Take into consideration, Video noise can be very deceiving vs in person. You've essentially lost all your ears stereo pinpointing and proximity to volume sense, and many vids do not convey the true tone. So. without more troubleshooting tests, no way to confirm your problem. Any diagnosis from hearing your video is a educated guess at best. Time for the sump plate off and a lower cylinder bore scope. Or could try a spark plug hole bore scope, or both. Have you done a compression test.? Does it use oil..? Hows the blow by rate..? Are the tail pipes sooty..? jmo
