Soon they'll be telling us we can't work on our own cars (driver-less vehicles and whatnot) and that it's for our own good/safety...I'm sure the lobbyists have been trying to get rid of the "right to repair" rule/law for quite awhile now...

Thats a thing of the past now, and we don't have to use funky nomenclatures from the factory to specify the torques, since its all listed in illustrations.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
53 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.
Rennlist: 1 discussions
0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.
0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

I seldom advertise here, but this one is worth the mention.
I am very happy to release the only directive for fastener (torque) specs for the entire 996! Thats right, not just the engine, we have compiled all the torques for the entire vehicle into one book!
This is a 150 page guide that covers the entire vehicle, engine, manual, and tiptronic transaxle, suspension, axles, steering, clutch, wheels, brakes, body, you name it! Models that are covered are all Carrera and Turbo models, and some specific GT3 specs as well, though not the entire GT3 is covered.
The specs for all IMS our IMS related products are also found in this book.
No more looking through workshop manuals for torques that may have been superseded for a decade, no more wondering what each fastener's length or diameter is; its all laid out in order of sub- assembly, through illustrated parts breakdowns, and can be found within seconds! Anyone who has ever looked for torque values for these cars, and engines knows what a challenge this can be, as these are not easy to find at all.
For more details see this page on the The Knowledge Gruppe page, and sign up for the December M96 102 Engine Rebuild School while you are there! The Knowledge Gruppe will be the source for all our resource materials, and classes moving forward.
Order your 996 Fastener Specification Guide here, use promo code "torque10" to receive your 10% Rennlist Discount, good through October 20. This is a pre- order, however the books are printing now, and will ship ASAP, on, or before 10/20

Here's a sample of the illustrated parts breakdowns, and torque tables. Books measure 5X7" and fit perfectly into any tool box, or glove box!
Think about it guys....this is half the cost of a DIY oil change. It'll pay for itself in no time unless you like snapping bolt heads or stripping threads on alum components.
A few hundred were sold today... Once people receive them and the word gets around about how complete they are, no one will complain about what it costs.
We tend to try to keep business within the Porsche industry, so these books are going through the same distribution as the components, and tools we develop. Amazon doesn't keep mom and pop Porsche shops afloat.
Oh I didn't hesitate, I ordered mine last night (even though I don't do much DIY I still like having information like this). Just saying the shipping was painful
This is well worth it.
I just somewhat refreshed my engine; this would of saved me hours and hours of searching for the information.
I wish it was around 4 weeks ago; this is a great addition to the Porsche workshop manual, wayne's 996 101 project.
Thank you for putting this together.
Lug bolts, yes.. Gas cap, well, if it had a special wrench to fit it, i'm sure we could determine a torque spec.
With 150 pages of info, you'll be hard pressed to find a critical fastener thats not covered.
In that case, refer to one of my many torque tables. Here you select bolt length, diameter, and any coatings it may have, and a general torque value is specified based upon those characteristics.
You gotta bring it to Jake's class to get it signed. While you're at it have him put a couple fingerprints on it with used JG-DT40. That should definitely up the collectability factor down the road.
My signature is so bad that you'd never know what it said anyway... I haven't signed any of these... Thats one reason why I was an Editor of the book, not an Author.
Very pleased to see these selling so well. Once a few guys get them, and see how comprehensive they are, they will sell even better.
A lot like developing components, I saw a need for this book as a tool for technicians. In my classes we often fight to find torque values during assembly. Thats a thing of the past now, and we don't have to use funky nomenclatures from the factory to specify the torques, since its all listed in illustrations.
Ordered!!! As a DIY'er, I am excited to have these values all in one place. While most things can be found online, it's nice to have the convenience of having this information ready to go when you are. I wish I had something like this while doing the coolant pipes in my 955CT.
I got a notice early last week that said they were a little delayed and should ship towards the end of the week. Haven't seen the book or any other notice yet. I'm chalking it up to first run issues and wasn't going to bug them until next week.
Edit:
Rereading it I'm guessing the "mid week" means this week.
I ordered a completely different book from Amazon. It hasn't arrived yet. I want to call Jake up to complain about it, but his phone number is not listed on his website. What gives?
Too funny...
BTW- The 10% off promotion for RL members has been extended through this week. Just use promo code "torque10" at checkout to receive the discount.
$17.95 Int'l shipping is not bad to ship it to Canada.
With our currency being so poor these days (.76/1.31) by the time it gets here, it'll be around $95 Cdn.
Thanks Jake for keeping the discount for this week as I had not been on Rennlist for a while.
Ah! well, this book should be really good to have.
Cheers!
The 2005 Launch Edition Carrera S may technically be a 997, but the cars have many 996 characteristics. Though only 337 were made, they are more fitted to the 996 category than the 997. I have one here now that has a hybrid 996/997 interior.
In future runs that designation will be removed from the cover, just to make things kosher.
Mine came in the mail today. Not sure why, but it's smaller than I expected.
Quality book though an extended table of contents or an index would be nice so you can jump straight the the relevant sub assembly. Very clear diagrams and tables though. Even for the semi-DIYer this will come in handy.
Thanks Jake.
The size of the book is clearly posted in the description, for those wondering it is roughly 5x7".
The book was made specifically to be used as a tool, so it needs to fit in a tool box, or a glove box.
The books have been more appreciated than I thought they would be. The Knowledge Gruppe is already on the second printing of the 997 book, and I think the first printing of 996 will last less than 2 weeks. Keep in mind, these are only being distributed via Porsche suppliers, not Amazon, or etc.
Thanks. This is why the size is stated in the descriptions.
We forget that most of the 996 owners did not come from the aircooled days, and do not remember the similar sized "tech specs" books that were offered by the factory.
Very true, after the 996 everything comes from POSES, or a PDF based manual that is murder to fumble through. That horrible digital system is why these books were originally spearheaded, and in the beginning we were only tasked with the 997.
The problem with the older workshop manuals comes when using new fasteners, especially those that are TTY. This is because a huge amount of the torques have changed since the original manuals were written, and are not valid for the new fasteners.
The specs in these manuals were verified less than 45 days before being printed, and we will update the site periodically with values that may change. New runs of books will see updates as well, when enough values have changed to warrant it.
Connecting Rod bolt torques have changed 4 times since I started working with M96 engines, as an example.
Yeah being able to have the latest info is the only good thing about PIWIS. Unfortunately it's buried under that horrid interface and they exploit the priced per page view model by updating all the pages every year regardless of if anything on the page was actually updated.
Its only going to get worse... It would be worse already if it weren't for "right to repair". The Canadians have it much worse, since they don't have the same luck as we do here in the states. Canadian independents flock to classes, because its the only way they can get info.
"It would be worse already if it weren't for "right to repair"."

They've been trying to get rid of it since it came to be. The current end runs they are doing is all the special proprietary tools that they make it difficult/impossible for non-dealers to get their hands on and how they are encrypting the ECUs. Earlier this year they even started lobbying to apply the DMCA to the cars (mainly playing with the computers).
Then of course you have the dealers that prey on most people being ignorant of the laws and their rights.
