Does anyone ever just remove the summer tires from their 18 inch wheels and put on winter tires or is replacing the whole wheel and tire set the norm ?

I run 19's (came with car) but I would prefer 18's which would give some more options tire wise.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mounted 4 Blizzak snows yesterday on my OEM 17' twists, so now I can drive my 911 this winter. Sorry to see the summer tires and 18" wheels off my Porsche, but happy to know that some snow and cold weather won't prevent me from using my car. While in the frunk to get something I noticed my spare tire/wheel was a little loose so I cinched down the wing nut. Went for a ride and discovered that I eliminated a persistent noise that I could't locate for months!

POST 2Original post

Nice. Question for you: Do you need to have your speedo recalibrated after a switch to you OEM 17" wheels or did the diameter remain the same?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I haven't recalibrated the speedo, but have found that actual speed is typically 4 mph less( at least on my '99 C2) than what the speedo reads regardless of 17" or 18" wheels.

POST 4Original post

It's getting to be that time of year! I installed my winter wheels and tires a few weeks ago.

POST 5Original post

That seems to be standard practice for every German car I've owned. (97 Boxster, 08 BMW 328i, 02 Carrera.) What size Blizzaks did you mount? For the life of me I can't find 17" tires that fit on MY2002 C2s!

POST 6Original post

Does anyone ever just remove the summer tires from their 18 inch wheels and put on winter tires or is replacing the whole wheel and tire set the norm ?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 12703655

For the life of me, I can't find dedicated snows that fit the 18' rim. If you found/find them, let me know!

POST 8Original post

It's usually easier to have two sets of wheels and tires, one summer and one winter.. Winter tires usually work better in narrower sizes, same weight over a smaller contact patch.. I would prefer 17 inch packages for winter.. The sizes for your car are easily available online. Pirelli just launched a new winter tire called ice zero, available in a ton of sizes.. Now get your ski rack installed.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 12703692

Same here. Even dropping down a size it's hard to find matching front and rears.

POST 11Original post

No, No, NOOOOOOOOOOO, not yet, no winter tires, please say it ain't so....the season may be coming to the end, SOON, for those of us who idle our cars in the winter, but this is like reading the Farmer's Almanc, just can't get psyched about this news......... for you, congrats and enjoy the winter miles.........

POST 12Original post

This is my second winter with the Porsche, no winter tires, no storage because of weather, I drive it topless call me an outlaw!!!!!

POST 13Original post

I need new winter tires too. When I took them off last year I noticed a large bubble on the inside sidewall of one of the rear tires. Now they look fine, but I know better. They're about 10 years old. Time for new ones

POST 14Original post

Have any of you driven in the snow, does the 911 have good clearance. I would have thought it unlikely.. O SR

POST 15Original post

Four inches of snow is fine. If there's more than that, then you become a plow.

POST 16Original post

T to T ( Thanksgiving to taxation day for me) 6 to 12 inches of white powder with the proper tires, no problem.

POST 17Original post

My installation and removal dates were pretty similar when I lived in northern Indiana. Now I install them in mid October and remove them in mid May. If there's 12" of snow on the ground, I'm either staying home or driving my truck!

POST 18Original post

I just picked up an '04 C4S a couple months ago, and i'm a complete newbie when it comes to winter rims vs. summer rims What size rims (fronts / backs) should I be looking for? The car is originally from Virginia and has never seen a winter, so I feel a little guilty about wanting to drive it this winter. Its too much fun to give up though

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 12708138

It's in the manual. 8x18 front 10x18 rears. Depending on offsets you may need 17mm spacers. Some people stretch the rear tires unto the 18x11 rims.

POST 20Original post

You should be able to pair them with some Sport Edition Cup 4 Rims for a near stock look. I run 19's (came with car) but I would prefer 18's which would give some more options tire wise. * Tire Rack lists only the 19" rim as a direct fit but my shop confirmed the Cup 4 in 18" will also work. For tires check out Blizzaks LM-32's. They have a number of sizes for an 18" rim - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=Blizzak+LM-32 Where in NY are you located ? Whats up Shak

POST 21Original post

Thanks for the info guys. Those Cup 4's look to be perfect cheapo rims for winter use. I'm in Astoria - the 911 is a great weekend getaway car!

I hope you don't live in the northern part of the country..today it rained in Michigan, was about 45 on my drive to work. I have my pilot ssports and even the rain with cool temps made me nervous at points. It truly felt like ice pucks. I don't have psm either. I got stuck in 3 in of snow last Nov (a fluke storm) and my *** was shaking every other second. I parked her, took the cayenne out and said sleep well (obv washed her then next nice day, filled up the tank, trickler charger etc). If I had snow tires that's different but it's down right dangerous with summer tires and not too safe with a/s (maybe a c4 4swould be ok due to the awd). Typed on phone

POST 23Original post

Praise be Allah!! No more need for snow tires for me!!! In Upstate NY, I used to have to leave my car at the bottom of the hill I lived on when it iced up bad, since the car couldn't make it up the hill.

POST 24Original post

Just ordered Blizzak WS-80's and wheels from Tire Rack today. No snow yet, but everyone says it's the way to go. Unfortunately they weren't offered in staggered sizes(fronts narrower than rears), so all 4 will be the same size(225/45 17's) unlike my summer 18's. Anyone else do this as well ?

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 12724211

Squared the stance? Is this something we can do with a C2? I'm curious about this since finding matching front and rears seem nearly impossible on my 18s.

POST 26Original post

In running 18s on my C4S 225/40/18 front and 265/35/18 rear. Blizzak LM-60s. It'll be my first real winter with them (moved to Detroit from Oregon). I do have an extra, complete set of the LM-60 tires if anyone wants to help clean out my garage.

POST 27Original post

Talked to the local dealer about this before ordering and he said it works just fine, no issues at all, except it doesn't look quite as nice as having the wider tires in the back.
