Now this is the question...with a suitable piggyback computer you could control the boost without changing the DME because both '02--> and turbo have the same ME7.8.

If you don't track the car then consider using air-to-water intercooling.

Proper system is sufficient for normal driving and occasional pulls, that way you can use OEM rear bumper (but need to modify turbo's OEM exhaust) and retain OEM stealthy looks.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hi
right my first post. here it goes. my 2000 carrera 996 engine has completly gone bang. the car was a spare car anyway. what i wanted to ask was i want to get a project going and try to convert it to a 996 turbo. now being that they are both 996's how easy is the swap and will i need anything extra or not also the car will be getting a turbo kit conversion too being all the quarter panels etc. i would like it if someone could point me in the right direction. Btw I'm based in uk
thanks
If the turbo kit is an upgrade kit, you'll need one additional part to complete the upgrade: A new M96 motor. You may want to buy 2 of them, as you'll probably blow up the first replacement with the turbo.
Just to clarify: are you jerking everyone around, or are you legitimately planning to upgrade a NA 996 with a motor that has "gone bang?" What's your budget?
If I was in your position - I had a roller 996 and what I wanted was a 996 turbo - I'd sell the roller and buy a turbo, and spend the next year driving it rather than spending a year trying to turn a non-Turbo into something it isn't meant to be...
I'm being serious, just trying to figure out if there is a lot of work involved and weather it is a swap that someone has done before. In terms of selling it for a 996 turbo I don't want to do as I have a r8 also. It's just a bit of a project id thought id do during the winter months. Budget wise don't really have a budget
Here's some quoted text from a Renntech thread from 2012. How handy are you as a mechanic?
-drive shafts: turbo might have beefier, but in any case normally aspirated has different than turbo or tipped NA (which has the same lenght as tipped turbo)
-cooling: Tip already has that third cooler in front. Rear hosing needs to be changed
-electronics: Instrument cluster must be changed because NA measures oil level in a different way than a turbo. Then there's the boost gauge. BUT '02 already has CANbus, so no problems there. HVAC stays. DME. Now this is the question...with a suitable piggyback computer you could control the boost without changing the DME because both '02--> and turbo have the same ME7.8. Some minor things there with programming, wiring and pinouts, but PM me if you're interested. Anyway if you install turbos's DME you need to change to C4's/turbo's ( with correct part MY) ABS/PSM pump in order to get the system working. 2WD PSM doesn't discuss with 4WD DME. This needs PIWIS programming with all correct codes.
-IC's will fit into OEM positions, but you'll need aftermarket rear bumper for outlets. Cool air ducting is the issue there
-Engine carrier (rear) must be modified to fit NA's body. Alternatively you must modify the body to install turbo's unmodified parts.
-few minor changes to fuel and vacuum lines
-beefier fuel pump is a must. At least if you're going to use 5 bar FPR. OEM pump will die within months. And if it survives the car will run lean if it's tuned...even more so if there's bigger turbos.
Then there's the thing with suspension and brakes. Buy a set of used GT3 brakes and a new aftermarket (Bilstein, H&R, KW3 etc) set of GT3 suspension. And GT3's roll bars.
If you don't track the car then consider using air-to-water intercooling. Proper system is sufficient for normal driving and occasional pulls, that way you can use OEM rear bumper (but need to modify turbo's OEM exhaust) and retain OEM stealthy looks.
Been there, done that. '00 C2 (OEM Aerokit) with '01 turbo engine and transmission, fully operational PSM.
Financially I'm still about €15K below turbo's cost, but I haven't counted the hours. And suspension and brake mods were done before the engine anyway.
It has been done before.
It will be a s**t ton of work, and at the end you'll still have a car that (in my opinion) won't be quite as good as a Turbo and won't be worth anywhere near as much as a "real" Turbo.
I'm getting a good mate of mine who is good with tools to help me out as he has done a few engine swaps in his time. Right the part I don't get is
" BUT '02 already has CANbus, so no problems there. HVAC stays. DME. Now this is the question...with a suitable piggyback computer you could control the boost without changing the DME because both '02--> and turbo have the same ME7.8. "
My carrera is 2000 doesn't it have dme 5.2 or something along them lines? Also
"-Engine carrier (rear) must be modified to fit NA's body. Alternatively you must modify the body to install turbo's unmodified parts."
I'm guessing that's the rear quarter panels right? Does it require anything else? Also what is tipped na
Thanks
It has been done and any engine swap is possible but why would you? Sell the POS roller and get a TT. Or,,,,,,,,

Tbh I'm after a winter project and I am able to get a 996 turbo engine at a price no one would give up on. Just trying to get all the info so I can see what else is required.
Thanks
I am under the impression that you need the wide body for all the stuff like intercoolers and piping to work.
Maybe use the motor sans turbos.
Either way ignore the naysayers and mod to your hearts content.
PS Do ya'll know what an LSx engine is over there, lol.
Dean, there have been two members here that have swapped in factory 996tt drivetrain into their non-turbo narrow body cars here. I suggest you search for them and get in contact with them. Everything else will just be speculation and second hand info at best. Best of luck and congrats on trying to make lemonade with lemons.
pete95zhn has c2 with turbo engine.
Best way to make this conversion is buy a wrecked TT and take the parts you need.
I think that you need at least
- Engine and auxiliaries (of course)
- Intercoolers (and find suitable space for these. All so fabricate ducting for cooling airflow)
- Transmission
- Driveshafts
- Ecu
- Wiring harness
- Instrument cluster
And I'm sure that there is more, a lot more.
But, I think that this converion make's sense. GT2 power with C2 weight.....
Just Do It
Would anyone have a contact number or email for pete95zhn, also has anyone else attempted this conversion. Only so I can ask them all the relative questions about this conversion.
Thanks
right does pete95zhn have a contact number or email? is there a build thread for his car? had a look and cant find anything. also has anyone else done a similiar conversion?
thanks
Dean1, please document the entire process and post your experience on Rennlist. Pretty much anything can be done, the question is do you have the knowledge, tools, space, and budget.
