Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used the DDM tuning ones and with canbus ballasts, they were around $80

Suggestion
At this point I can't recommend a vendor - the one I've been using for 10+ years has gone downhill rapidly in the last year to the point that I am unwilling to order from them again.
Leading evidence: 'Use ddm tuning ones' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend vendor - the one i've been' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I am wondering if anyone has replaced the headlights with xenon or HID bulbs to give off more light.

The light is brighter than incandescent and the LED bulbs run cooler than HID.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

The set I just installed one of these on my wife's car after another HID ballast failure include aluminum heat sinks and fans at the back end of the assembly to keep the electronics cool; the bulbs themselves do not put off much heat, unlike the HIDs that burn VERY hot.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I love my 996, and wish that there was a way to get more powerful headlights than stock. I am wondering if anyone has replaced the headlights with xenon or HID bulbs to give off more light. My question is, what options are out there that people have done, to increase the power of the headlights?
The standard housings have issues when retrofitted with HID bulbs - I've seen a few people post up having melted their non-Litronic housings with HID bulbs.
If I was retrofitting an incandescent housing, I'd go with one of the relatively new LED retrofit kits. The light is brighter than incandescent and the LED bulbs run cooler than HID. The set I just installed one of these on my wife's car after another HID ballast failure include aluminum heat sinks and fans at the back end of the assembly to keep the electronics cool; the bulbs themselves do not put off much heat, unlike the HIDs that burn VERY hot. I'm impressed with how bright the LEDs are.

Another forum member is selling some beautiful retrofit kits - you'd be remiss in not checking that out, as they add a very nice aesthetic to the lights.
LEDs will increase the brightness. HIDs are probably still your best bet for throwing the most light furthest down the road.
If you're driving somewhere dark and you really want to illuminate the road, HID.
If you're driving somewhere and you want your car to be highly visible so it doesn't get smashed by a giant SUV, LED.
Stock HID headlights are 4,300K. Above that, you might get more illumination value, but it's not in the range that's visible to the human eye. 6,000K HIDs look very cool, but they won't provide lighting performance that is as good as 4,300K.
This has been discussed before many times. Your 3 options are:
1. Aftermarket projector retrofit
2. Sand and polish existing OEM projector lenses
3. Run aftermarket 55w HID ballast and bulbs
Pelican is selling the projectors that are made by the member. They are top quality.
I just put a set of HID H7 bulbs in my Boxster and they work great. I used the DDM tuning ones and with canbus ballasts, they were around $80
I went with 35 watt HIDs as I was concerned about the heat and they are plenty bright. A huge improvement over halogen
On the LED bulb replacements, has anyone fitted them to a Porsche?
"Aftermarket" LED main Headlight bulb replacement is still at an infancy IMO. Basically, you're asking an LED that's meant to shoot straight and not have wide dispersion properties to bounce off the old reflector bowls. The light output is weaker most of the time due to this kind of design and then there's the heat issue. The heat generated by the LED drivers themselves need to be well ventilated and with the cheap Chinese(non military) components used in these, they tend to die a premature death from the heat, inferior electronic components, and tight packaging.
I'd rather do an OEM retrofit from the newer Acura, Audi, BMW's etc and place them into my stock housings.
The LED's I'm currently running include fans integrated into the aluminum heat sink - no issues yet. The goal with that car is brightness for normal driving and a lot of light for mountain driving at night, so the next step will be HID's in the fog lights.
Where are you running the LED? I want to go this route any link to the kit. Pics of your car? I don't have washers or HID in my car. Factory projectors I believe.
