Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry if this doesnt come through right, as I am on mobile. Trying to work through my list of issues and am stuck on the following: There is a strap on the convertible top that appears to be detached (picture to follow). It is only on the drivers side and sometimes will work itself to the outside of the top after operation. What is it? Best repair option, short of replacing the top?

POST 2Original post

There are 2 straps on the inside of the convertible top. one above the driver and one above the passanger. The one above the driver on my car is showing considerable wear. There is already a hole worn in the strap and some of the threads are hanging out on it, but the convertible top above it is fine. It looks like these straps don't really do anything, they not super tight, and it looks like the top will operate fine without them. If I were to cut them out, would it affect the top in any way?

POST 3Original post

They definitely do something. Top won’t aline in rail properly without. I stitched mine back on with some heavy duty thread and a needle. Really not hard. Been working perfectly for 5+ yrs since repair.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Do you think a heavy duty contact cement or other adhesive would work? I don't see stitch marks on the other side that has remained attached.

POST 5Original post

It connects to a strap on the other side of the top with a spring in the middle, through a fabric loop on the top. The spring is stretched when the top is up. But when you put the top down, the spring will pull in the sides so they tuck in correctly and fit down into the well. This also keeps the top centered so the cables slot into the rails. Sorry, no pics. I joined mine back together by sewing some overlapping strap with some snaps on it. A different issue will keep the cables out of the rail on one side and keep the other side from seating altogether. The mounting for the top end of the cable is a rivet. This rivet sometimes breaks. If you are handy, it's not difficult to take the top rails apart to replace the rivet. Look for top replacement videos on youtube to see what it looks like. Good luck with the fix.
