The PO of my car had installed an aftermarket short-shift kit, and I NEVER liked the feel.
Leading evidence: 'Install aftermarket short-shift kit, and i never liked the feel' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust cables' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I suggest looking into an alignment tool and adjusting the cables.

Maybe some users have figured out ways to adjust the shifter to minimize the effort?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I fitted a cheapo eBay SS kit to my C4S. Its definitely shortened the shift but its made a tricky shift into 1st when cold much harder. When I got the car, the shift into 1st wasnt great, hitting reverse a couple of times and scaring the car behind. Now its even harder until the gearbox warms up a little. Once warm, its not the smoothest but acceptable. No other gears are affected.
Any suggestions on what might be going on and whether its something I can fix?
How many miles on the car ? When was the transmission fluid last changed ? And what fluid was used ? You got the expected results from a " cheap shifter " .
sounds like time to change oil. definitely only use Porsche. I've tried the motul made things worse.
made need to also calibrate the shifter w/ that plastic tool thingy.
I suggest looking into an alignment tool and adjusting the cables. Sounds like they may need it. I'd also take a look at the attachment points at the transmission to ensure they're secure.
A lever that shortens the shift throw is always going to add effort to the shift action. It is also going to reduce the amount of left-right motion necessary to change from 1-2 to 3-4 or 5-6 in the H pattern. And reverse of course. So some of what you're experiencing is inevitable.
So it's either not been adjusted correctly, or your synchro hubs, sleeves and baulk rings are protesting at being rushed.
Hopefully this isn't teaching you to suck eggs , but watch these two videos and you'll see why fitting a quickshift isn't always the best decision.

Most ebay short shifts seem to provide a
minimum
30% reduction in travel, what you're most likely feeling with your first gear selection issue isn't a new issue, it's an existing one, but because you've reduced the shift travel by 30%, you've also increased the amount of force required to engage that gear by a similar amount.
The shift lever is just that, a lever, along with a fulcrum (which you've now effectively moved to reduce the throw) hence the increase in force needed to move it against an already worn synchro hub/shift sleeve.
When you have a lug nut that's tight, you get a longer breaker bar, whilst with a worn gearbox, you do the opposite ie stay with the slowest shift lever you can practically/physically use, because any shortshift requires you to apply more effort, and also requires the synchro hub to do it's job far more quickly than executing a longer/slower shift would. And having watched the second video I've linked to, and it's indepth explanation of how the synchro cones and their teeth work, you'll appreciate that applying more effort in less time, will only exacerbate the issue that was already there, but you were unaware of or had acclimatised to.
Long and short of the situation, double check the adjustment of the cables and the shifter, and if they're all good, go back to a stock 996 shifter (I think they may be NLA now) or a 997 shifter, or a 997.2 GT3/RS shifter, both of the latter will give you a 15-16% reduction in travel, which will minimise the additional shifting effort required and also give the synchros a fighting chance of doing their job in the time you allot to the process, but without increasing the wear on them unnecessarily any further.
The PO of my car had installed an aftermarket short-shift kit, and I NEVER liked the feel. Cold transmission amplifies the issue, but in my experience, the altered geometry with the short-shift kit on an OEM shifter increased the lever effort more than I thought it should be. Maybe some users have figured out ways to adjust the shifter to minimize the effort?
From some great suggestions from forum members, I pulled the shifter out and replaced with OEM 997.2 RS shifter and the results were amazing.
