Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Interesting read on a Jalopnik writer wrenching on his 996 with a great callout to @Porschetech3 with the UAOS https://jalopnik.com/wrenching-on-my...r-t-1849927757

POST 2Original post

Good read, nice to see the 996 getting attention.

POST 3Original post

Working on the 996 is not pure joy, but its close.

POST 4Original post

I enjoy working on my 99' C2 Cab 6sp and find it satisfying when things go well, however, when things go sideways......... I must confess I have engaged in some epic cussing sessions and once my head spun all the way around just like the little girl in "The Exorcist"! I'm lying, obviously, the cursing wasn't that epic. I find the engine compartment in particular a wonder of packaging engineering, but a real pain in the a** when wrenching. Owned the car now for 10 years and I still love it, wrenching on it, looking at it, watching people watch me drive it!

POST 5Original post

Nice article. That’s great to see @Porschetech3 and the UAOS being mentioned.

Hi Kyle, thanks for the ink on my UAOS design, glad to help out with any future DIY on your 996 and looking forward to reading about your adventures in 996 World... My oldest Sister and her Husband were both Journalist, He ended his career with 25 years as an Editor for New York Times and my Sister wrote articles for the Department of Agriculture and also Encyclopedia Britannica, although I can honestly say I'm positive I will enjoy reading your stories about your 996 experiences much more than anything they wrote...

Enjoyed the article. Glad to see the reference to the UAOS. New innovative solutions to old problems should be recognized and discussed. Hope you become a long term owner and continue to write about the 996. It is an exceptional car with a huge enthusiastic set of owners.

Haha, well if you decide you need yet more test mules for that spicy-looking sump setup, I'm your man. But in seriousness, the kit went on great, and I'm excited to see how it performs, considering most of my miles are hard, high-speed canyon miles on Angeles Crest Highway.

You wont be disappointed !!

POST 15Original post

Pfffft. 10 hours to install the UAOS? I hope that does not scare people. I've done the Ultimate Track Drain Back kit in under three hours and I make spreadsheets all day. I have done it a few times though....

POST 16Original post

Nice article. I can relate. My 996 is the first car I ever pulled an engine/trans on. I gotta say, the way they come apart and go back together is pretty intuitive. Everything just kinda makes sense. Audis on the other hand...

Yea, I use you as an example all the time !! There is no "book time" for AOS replacement, and the UAOS is not much more time, it is all plug-n-play.... I reciently had a shop that was doing a UAOS install give the job to one of thier lesser experianced Techs, he spent 12 hours just trying to get the "bitch bolt" out...lol ..I mean how could anyone spend 12 hours on 1 bolt? Then had another shop where the owner did the same install job himself in 3 hours and didn't even touch the bitch bolt, he just lowered the engine a few inches and went in over the top... I recomend 4 hours for the 996.1, ... 5 hours for the 996.2 , and 6 hours if it is aTiptronic...If the engine is already out for some other operation then on 1 hour to install the kit....

That's just what the shop typically charges for AOS on a .2 manual coupe, I guess? The pricing was in line with a bunch of other local shops, so I'm fine with it.
